PF/C Kosta Koufos (CSKA Moscow)

Welcome back indeed. I think Kosta can improve his strength and durability and some of his other basketball skills better by coming to Ohio State during the summer. It will serve him better in the long run. I know you are disappointed that he would not be playing with the under 19 Greek national team and for that I think we are all sorry. Stay in touch!

Hi all from Greece just celebrating the win of Euroleague with Panathinaikos.

During the brake of the game I had a discussion with Coach of the National team of Greece...yes I sneaked into the VIP lounge!!!
I went straight up to him once he finished a interview.
Coach what is going to happen with Koufos?? he is amazing I said!

Then I sensed some kind of disapointment from him...
His response was: "we will see, we have talented players in Greece also he responded"

After asking around I got the message that Kostas will not attend the preparation of the Greek National Team and even if he does he will not participate in any tournament.

The reason is quite simple coach Matta wants him in Ohio especially after the departure of Oden.

This is clearly the wrong decision for Kosta?s career ,he probably doesn?t know that yet. But I strongly believe playing at a National Team level is harder, needs more muscle and more teamwork (areas in which Kostas needs to improve).

By the way I also saw some videos of Kostas at the Jordan Classic he seems to have gained a lot of weight and muscle....
totally disagree. the arrival of kof in columbus in june is a great thing...

Tough Decision (Koufos better than Odden?)

Well glad to hear that KK?s cousin is part of the forum.... hope Kostas took part also. : )
I really believe Kostas talent is unique I have watched 2 games he has played plus some highlights in the usual websites.

Well quite a number of fans in Greece follow Kosta?s progress the past few years and we are glad he is doing well regardless if he plays for Greece or not.

It might be the case that its best for Kostas to get up to NCAA speed over the summer. I hope he does succeed.

I also think he needs to improve in some areas that he is lacking at the moment in order to make a difference next year.

Some of these areas are : his back to the basket game, using a hook shot given his wingspan should help him dominate the basket.
Improving his explosiveness is also critical to help him get better at the both ends of the court.
Last and definetly not least is the passing game. If someone could implant Sabonis?s brain (meaning awareness, intelligence and experience) in Koufos body then KK would be easily the best big man in the world.
If only Sabonis could give him some big man lessons....

Well I have noticed that Kostas is building some muscle... I can?t wait to see him in his first NCAA game.:oh: :io:

Kosta keep up the good work.

Ohio fans will forget Greg Oden when Koufos brings home the championship....

While we're looking forward to Kosta playing for the Buckeyes, and would certainly be thrilled if tOSU wins the NCAA tournament while he's on the team, Ohio State fans will never (and should never) forget Greg Oden, or any other Buckeye greats.

Dino-what is your reaction when you see the statement that your cousin will make us Ohio State fans forget about Greg Oden? I think Kosta is not quite as athletic as Oden but he is possibly a better ball handler and outside shooter.

Well I did not mean forget Oden in that way. I meant that Kostas hopefully will be able to cover the Oden loss...
And surely Kostas needs to become more athletic...(as we say it in Greece , explosive...) which means he has to improve his footwork.

I didn't think you meant it that way. Maybe something more like "Buckeye fans will be able to stop mourning the loss of Greg Oden when ..."

Koufos is a very different player with a different skill set than GO. I hope fans do not expect to much of this unique player to early. He will bring a different tempo and offensive game to team next year but he will not have the defensive pressence we had this past year with GO.

jed, i think at this point one of the most important thing is to get kof in the weightroom. we saw it with lighty and cook last year. those two both put on some serious size and strength. he will need that to compete in the very physical big ten.

sabonis. thats like saying if he had (blanks) skill, were (blank) is one of the greatest of all time...

oden. not the same kind of player. greg will have a special place in the heart of many many buckeye fans. his role in the revival of the team will be something many will hold special. (though maybe cook should be given a lot of credit a la zwick in his instrumental role and recruiting)

kof. im telling you right now, the most impressive thing to me is kofs hands. call him hoover...

I will be very interested to see how KKs rather unique skill set will translate onto the college hardwood. If he gets stronger and develops a little mean streak I'll be thrilled. I wonder what Thad has in mind for him now that GO is gone ? Will he play the 5 on both O and D, or will he play the high post on O to take advantage of his passing and outside shot. I foresee a lot of zone next year and with our length it should be imposing and intimidating. We need a count down clock counting down the days til next falls opening tip:biggrin:

to whom it may concern

Kostas best asset are his hands and passing game, he is like a hoover which is pretty funny if you think about it because he lives in canton which is the home of hoover, but to reply about Kostas mean streak. You guys have no idea. He is literally a sleeping giant. When he misses a shot, or gets blocked (which doesn't happen often) or gets scored upon, it looks like hes getting frustated from your point of view but what is really happening is that the anger is building on the inside. Kosta keeps alot on the inside and when he shows it you know hes there, trust me you will see at tOSU soon. I have played 1 on 1 with kosta since he was 5 years old. I have seen his game literally from day 1. He is a basketball freak, he breathes basketball. He has come a along way and still has a long way to go. You guys are in for one hell of a show. talk to you soon, Dino
