PF/C Kosta Koufos (CSKA Moscow)

Kostas best asset are his hands and passing game, he is like a hoover which is pretty funny if you think about it because he lives in canton which is the home of hoover, but to reply about Kostas mean streak. You guys have no idea. He is literally a sleeping giant. When he misses a shot, or gets blocked (which doesn't happen often) or gets scored upon, it looks like hes getting frustated from your point of view but what is really happening is that the anger is building on the inside. Kosta keeps alot on the inside and when he shows it you know hes there, trust me you will see at tOSU soon. I have played 1 on 1 with kosta since he was 5 years old. I have seen his game literally from day 1. He is a basketball freak, he breathes basketball. He has come a along way and still has a long way to go. You guys are in for one hell of a show. talk to you soon, Dino
whered you get the hoover idea...

Thanks Dino

Thanks for the inside info Dino. Not knowing Kosta it looks to me like he is not used to playing against guys his size and doesn't have the mean streak. But with AAU ball and pickup games with college and pro guys, I'm sure that he's played plenty against better competition (when I was in high school when the BB season was over that was it til next fall)

It's great to know that i was wrong (very strange to be happy about being wrong ) and that Kosta is so driven and determined to be great.

giving u guys a heads up

Whats up everyone, ive got news on the kosta front. He is now going to greece to play ball. Dont worry osu fans, he is not going for long. Kosta is still coming to columbus after graduation june 18. He is going to hit the strengh and conditioning program hard, and as far as what his sister has told me he is going to greece around mid july for 3 weeks. B-ball in europe is far different than here in the U.S. they play a far more oriented game on both sides of the court (offense and defense) and dont forget team Greece beat the U.S team last year and trust me when i tell you it will only help him in the future. Kosta is officially going to Greece after getting the ok from the Buckeye brass. c ya and talk to you soon, Dino

Koufos the Greek

Thanks Dino,

Glad to hear Kostas will be visiting Greece. I agree with you that the European style of play will help him develop some of his skills.
Defence and Teamwork in Europe are key to the game while offence and 1v1 (or rather v5) are what the game is more like in the other side of the Atlantic (NBA). NCAA is clearly closer to Europe in terms of defence and team work as well as following coach?s orders.
I consider European basketball as one level above NCAA and a click below NBA. Playing against tough european defence will develop even more Kostas skills (passing, awareness, teamwork).
I consider European basketball as a more ?intelligent? version of the game where tactics and team work rather than skills and speed are key.
The example of Sabonis I used in a previous message is an example of a basketball genious. How a player slow like Muresan and weaker than most centers at the NBA at the time managed to have such an impact and be able to compete up to the conf finals for 2 years in a row.
I think Kostas needs to get elements of Sabonis/European game but also try to improve his footwork, speed and atheleticism (NBA game).

Given that I am a big fan of Kostas I will closely follow the various open training sessions of the national team and will provide you with the info.

Take care All,
ST

College basketball: OSU recruit rides dreams for Olympics to Greece

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Kosta Koufos will try to fit in with not one team but two this summer.

Koufos, the 7-foot-2, 260-pound centerpiece of Ohio State's 2007 basketball recruiting class, starts school June 18. He will begin playing in open gyms with his new teammates almost immediately.

A month later, though, Koufos will head overseas, to his mother's homeland, to practice and play with the Greek national team.

"I've got a good possibility of playing in the Olympics next year, hopefully," he said. He will be the biggest player on both his new teams. "The tallest," he clarified, "but probably not the most muscular."

Improving his strength and conditioning has consumed Koufos this spring. He said he is training three times a day, in one form or another, to prepare himself for a more physical game in college. His forte at the high school level was his skill for his size, not his strength.

"I worked hard before but not as efficiently as I am now," he said.

Ohio State returns 6-9 Othello Hunter and 6-8 Matt Terwilliger inside next season and adds Koufos and 6-10 transfer Kyle Madsen of Dublin Coffman and 6-9 freshman Dallas Lauderdale.

"I think he's going to get a good feel early on for the size and that sort of stuff that he's going to have to go against," coach Thad Matta said of Koufos.

Koufos is not the only Ohio State men's basketball player hoping to compete overseas this summer. Sophomore David Lighty is scheduled to try out for USA Basketball's 19-and-under team June 28-30 in Dallas. The team will play in the FIBA U19 world championship July 12-22 in Novi Sad, Serbia.

Lighty was more efficient on offense in the NCAA Tournament than earlier in the season and will be expected to build on that performance going into next season.

"He's a tremendous defender," Matta said, "but the biggest thing he did as the season wound down was take care of the ball. I thought he was playing his best basketball at the end of the year."
