Eagles zoning in on defense
Friday, March 16, 2007

REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

AKRON Finding ways to contain 7-foot-2 Kosta Koufos on offense is a worry for any coach facing the GlenOak High School boys basketball team.

A bigger concern, though, should be cracking GlenOak's 2-3 zone defense.

"Our 2-3 has really developed over the course of the season," freshman guard T.J. Sutton said.

Kostas The Greek

Hi Everybody,
I am glad to find that Kostas has made his presence known all over the states. While trying to track his successes I bumped into this site forum.

Watching Kostas Videos inYou tube I can see a lot of potential there.
Kostas is very similar to Pau Gasol in my point of view and I think (If he is healthy) will be the highlight of the College next year. (http://network2.tv/episode/2374868/)
Given that Kostas has accepted the offer of the Greek national team coach P.Yiannakis and the successes the Greek National Team had over the US last year I think Kostas will love playing of Greece.

Moreover if he makes a good impression in the Under 19 World Championship in July Kostas will be selected in the Mens squad for the European Championship in September and will play againsts NBAers (Gasol, Pedja, Dirk etc).
These events will be great experience for Kostas and this will show in his college play next year (since he will play against stronger and more exprerienced players).

Well lets see what happens...
By the way does any of you think GlenOak will will the state championship?

Congrats on the strong Greek basketball program, and I certainly hope that Kosta has some great experiences with the U-19 program. He is clearly expected to make major contributions next year in Columbus.

And no...GlenOak will likely not win the state championship this year. Moeller or St. Ed's are the clear favorites...hard for one guy to overcome a great, well-coached team, which is what he going to face one way or another.

Play of Koufos, Quinn has GlenOak on cusp of final four

By CHRIS BEAVEN

They began the season as the heart and soul of the GlenOak High School boys basketball program.

The super-talented 7-footer and the often-overlooked point guard ? Kosta Koufos and Mark Quinn. The two seniors were the only Golden Eagles with any significant varsity experience, and they needed to lead an inexperienced team into a season of high expectations.

LET?S CELEBRATE Kosta Koufos holds the Division I regional championship trophy as he and his fellow GlenOak High School boys basketball players celebrate their first trip to the state final four Saturday at Akron?s James A. Rhodes Arena.

AKRON They gave everyone the full show Saturday night ? long 3-pointers, perfect fast breaks and big defensive plays.

A fired-up underdog came after them, and the GlenOak Golden Eagles showed they run and have all kinds of fun.

GlenOak made big play after big play in beating Firestone, 83-50, in a Division I high school boys basketball regional final at Rhodes Arena. A loud crowd of 4,374 saw the Eagles score their season high and do it in exciting fashion.

?They came at us big-time,? GlenOak 7-foot-2 senior Kosta Koufos said. ?It made our game go to the next level.?

Nobody is laughing at you know, Eagles

AKRON - Sweat dripped off his head like it was Niagara Falls. Jack Greynolds Jr. has won a lot of big games. He has played in big games, too. But the GlenOak High School boys basketball coach may never know just how big this one was.

GlenOak is the also-ran of Stark County sports. The Golden Eagles are the talented team (you pick the sport) few worry about. The big engine that couldn?t.

Until now.

The largest high school in Stark County finally put it all together ? skill, mental toughness, heart, courage and coaching ? when it mattered most. GlenOak?s boys have never won a state title after the leaves turn colors. Two state baseball titles during the mid-?90s. That?s it.

Eagles soar on more than one pair of wings

VIEW FROM ABOVE GlenOak senior Kosta Koufos takes a shot over Firestone's Scott Boykin in Saturday's third quarter of the Division I regional final at Rhodes Arena in Akron. Koufos had a triple-double, leading GlenOak to an 83-50 win and its first trip to the state tournament.

Go ahead and call them a one-man team.

But two regional wins last week again proved that the GlenOak High School boys basketball team is about more than 7-foot-2 Kosta Koufos.

The McDonald's All-American did plenty to lead the way. But anyone forgetting about the rest of the Golden Eagles is making a mistake as they prepare to play in their first state tournament.

GlenOak (23-3) meets Cincinnati St. Xavier (21-5) in a Division I state semifinal at 5:15 Friday at Value City Arena.

I find it hard to believe that he will play in the European Championship games in the fall just due to the fact that he will have to start school and I do not think that he would have Matta's blessings to play in those games. In fact, it really would be nice if you would not play in the Under 19 games and come to Ohio State during the summer and get to know his future teammates and possibly get a head start on school.

Koufos the Greek

Well I see you points and concerns regarding Kosta?s participation at European Level. However here are a few points that might influence Kostas decision.
Under 19 World Championship will take place until July 23 (long before school starts.) Kostas regularly visits Greece in the summer so he might combine the visit.
In the under 19 WC he will play against top players from all over the world (the States as well) most of which will be older so he will be up for the challenge for sure.
I also find it difficult that he will be picked for the Senior team for the European Championship. This is because there are good (& strong) centers (such as Papadopoulos, Baby Shaq, Big Jake, Bourousis etc) Greece has right now and only two get picked in each tournament so it is going to be tough.
I do not doudt though that Yiannakis will take Kostas along to some Senior team training sessions in order to introduce him to the seniors and show him what he will be up against in the future.
I also think that Kostas should focus on his education given the scholarship (I am sure his mother will tell him that all the time, mine did years ago) since education is something that lasts more than a basketball career....

Still trying to find a site which will give me a good idea on how the high school championship format works. I know Glen oak are in the semi and in they win they go to the state final but still there should be a site to descibe this.

Take care

the ohio high school final four are this weekend. its like in other tournament, win you move on. currently four teams are left. kk plays in the biggest division.

ohio has 799 hs with boys basektball.
break down like this
d1 409 or more boys (196 teams)
d2 234 to 408 (199)
d3 135 to 407 (200)
d4 less than 134 (204)

teams play in regions and districts. essentially its based on geography.

their are six districts (central, east, ne, nw, se, sw)
its really interesting how it works and is relatively complicated seeing as the number of teams from each region are set.

ill link you a few sites here

20 pages on how the tourney works
