KING: Peyton Manning’s squeaky-clean image was built on lies, as detailed in explosive court documents showing ugly smear campaign against his alleged sex assault victim

Peyton Manning's Squeaky Clean Past "Do You Really Know Your Sports Hero?"
NY Daily News

Thirteen years ago, USA Today obtained 74 pages of explosive court documents on Peyton Manning, Archie Manning, the University of Tennessee, and Florida Southern College that revealed allegations of a sexual-assault scandal, cover up, and smear campaign of the victim that was so deep, so widespread and so ugly that it would've rocked the American sports world to its core. Yet USA Today never released those documents for reasons I can't explain.

Mel Antonen, now a baseball writer for Sports Illustrated, wrote about the documents for the paper on Nov. 3, 2003. Three days later, Christine Brennan, longtime sportswriter for USA Today wrote an op-ed about Peyton Manning and the documents entitled, “Do you really know your sports hero?” but the scandal pretty much died right there.

Facebook wouldn’t be invented for three more months. Twitter didn’t come for three more years. The word “viral” was still only being used to describe the spread of infectious diseases.

But when the documents were sent to me on Tuesday, two days after the Super Bowl, it was immediately clear to me that had the world actually known what they contained, it’s doubtful that Peyton would have ever been the “swell, golly, gee-whiz” pitchman for Nationwide Insurance, DirecTV or Papa John’s Pizza. Certainly, evangelical op-eds calling him “squeaky clean” and positioning Peyton as the arbiter of all things good and decent in the world simply wouldn’t be the case.

(Peyton Manning been a POS for a while...)
I'll expand by saying that this isn't related only to this incident, which I have always been shocked wasn't more widely discussed, but well, some athletes/social figures seem to be Teflon at keeping things at bay.

This goes into hearing about another unfortunate and forceful situation/run in he had with a female friend of a family friend- I know, not concrete - but it goes along with other murmurings that I'd always kind of heard. There's been quiet talk of infidelity/open marriage that have floated around Indy, but he's a god here. I almost got into an argument at a Super Bowl party when I pulled a "Well actually..." on a group of friends regarding Peyton's "classiness." Wasn't worth it to pursue. But interesting that this comes out now.

He does contribute an ungodly amount to one of the best children's hospitals in the country (in his name now), so, that's good.

Finally had the chance to read this article and my god, this is journalism? Just terribly written. It comes across as an amateur filing something into Bleacher Report.

Either way, this incident did happen and it has been out there for a while. The amazing part is how much it is glossed over and has been outright ignored for the entirety of his career. But if you are finally going to bring this to light, it deserves much better investigation and writing than whatever this King guy presented. Yeesh.

Like I've said, my opinion on Manning is formed beyond this event and I do not think he is the squeaky-clean guy portrayed, but who really knows except for Manning and any alleged victims.

I have always been uncomfortable with the level of worship directed at this guy, not only from Colts and Broncos fans, but others as well. The sports media has been a willing facilitator. Its almost like the world needs a perfect sports hero, so let's cook one up.

Shaun King is a Black Lives Matter activist. He's not exactly an impartial source.

He dipped his balls in a female trainer's mouth. She did not want them there. That's sexual assault. It's fucking disturbing.

I agree with @OHSportsFan about the article. The dude was fired up after reading all of the bull[Mark May] about Cam and went after Manning, who is a piece of [Mark May].

Both Cam and Jameis, who seems to have OJ-like fault lines in who thinks he is guilty and who doesn't.

It's interesting to me how people try to throw all three cases together when they cover such a broad spectrum.

Winston raped a girl. He should be in jail.
Manning was a jock asshole. There's a reason he lost every lawsuit vs the Dr. he humiliated.
Newton stole a laptop, got kicked out of school for academic fraud & is suspected of being paid to end up at Auburn (IME with the school in question that is probably true). While not being an individual of character, there is no indication Newton has ever imposed himself sexually on another person.

Despite how hard the hate whitey crowd is trying to make race an issue, the real reason nobody paid attention to Manning's nastiness is because it happened 20 years ago. People seem to forget that Roethlisberger has been publicly savaged for his behavior (arguably worse than Winston).
