People to Punch, Pet Peeves, and General Vexations (mega-merge)

So, I'm watching the local news while doing some work and then Inside Edition comes on. Not really paying attention. Then I hear the dramatic proclamation that 1 in 5 homes will be burglarized or "home invaded". Which is just a complete and utter bullshit stat that home security salesmen came up with.

Facts: almost 126 million households in US. A little over 2 million burglaries a year (home and business). Neither the FBI or most states even have a legal definition of "home invasion". It could literally be your mother-in-law visiting or adult children moving back in.

I'm not trying to hold tabloid tv to any kind of standard but it is bullshit like this that leads people into a paranoid frenzy that results in stand your ground laws, acquiescing civil liberties to feel more safe and voting for crime bills that do nothing to deter crime. I guess it helps sell a lot of home security systems and guns though.

The FBI even has a disclaimer:
Each year when Crime in the United States is published, some entities use the figures to compile rankings of cities and counties. These rough rankings provide no insight into the numerous variables that mold crime in a particular town, city, county, state, tribal area, or region. Consequently, they lead to simplistic and/or incomplete analyses that often create misleading perceptions adversely affecting communities and their residents. Valid assessments are possible only with careful study and analysis of the range of unique conditions affecting each local law enforcement jurisdiction. The data user is, therefore, cautioned against comparing statistical data of individual reporting units from cities, metropolitan areas, states, or colleges or universities solely on the basis of their population coverage or student enrollment.

Radio commercial for some bankruptcy outfit. "The MORE you owe, the MORE you'll SAVE! Keep more of your hard-earned money -- call us at XXX-XXX-XXXX and lets us help!"

Motherfuckers, you aren't keep YOUR hard-earned money....you are keeping somebody else's hard-earned money.

I've got lots of grievances right now.

Seriously, there's only a handful of weeks left in the school year, you would think by now that nobody still needs to watch their kid walk ALL the way into the school from that first spot in the drop-off lane... Elementary and preschool drop-off and pick-up lanes are a daily source of "pet peeves and general vexations."

I dunno. Is there some rule that pedophiles don't abduct children late in the school year?

That's not why they're staying there. Ours is pretty much the safest suburban school setting you could imagine, with smiling teachers waiting right there and a police car on-site every day. It's a 50 foot walk. These mommies and daddies just can't bear to turn away while there's one more fleeting glimpse of their little baby's backpack still to be had.

And hey, I get it, I do drop-off just so I can have those minutes with my daughter every morning, and it's always bittersweet to see our kids taking more and more steps on their own.

But that's what the parking lot is for: so they can walk their kid in themselves, check their backpack and shoelaces yet again, give them one last pep talk, or just sit there until the tears are dry. Whereas the drop-off lane is supposed to operate like an assembly line, at least by this point in the school year.
