Just want to reiterate that Joe Paterno was not a saint, nor a good person (Which most, if not all, know on this board).

He was a mediocre football coach at best who was completely exposed once his team was forced to play equal, or better, competition instead of the patsies with which Joe was padding his stats previously. Once he was forced to follow someone else's rules when it came to scheduling and refs (B1G), he became a whiney little bitch because he was not in charge (just remember that he wanted to start his own conference and be commissioner/dictator/head referee and run it like he wanted).

He was, in fact, nothing more than a corrupt football coach who was able to dupe people into believing he was "above the fray". In the end, though, he really showed his true character which was that he only cared about himself and his "legacy" (as shown by the stupid lawsuit his family has going to bring back the 409 bullshit when a majority of those wins were home cooked). His so called "Grand Experiment" ended up being more of a big pile of excrement than anything (shuffling players to branch campuses when grades are no good; using players' fathers as refs during Ped State's independent years' home games, looking the other way while an assistant coach fucked underaged boys as a hobby)

His ducking any question about negative goings on amongst his team, and then calling such valid questions "media witch hunts" to try and deflect blame/responsibility. Wishing he could have done more yet not wanting to "ruin peoples' weekends" all for the alleged rape of a young boy by his ex-assistant coach (who just so happen to run a charity that catered to young, very emotionally vulnerable boys)

Fuck Joe Paterno and the pedophile he enabled (and almost literally rode in on due to the pedophile's football defensive scheme mastery).

Beat Nebraska!! Or whatever you want to call them.

The life lesson here is to pay close attention to people that make a living and their reputation chastising other people for not living up to a certain ideal. Paterno was the archetype for that kind of "above the fray" persona. When asked about retirement... "It would leave college football in the hands of the Jackie Sherrills and Barry Switzers of the world".
