I'd be interested to hear from Grad or someone with direct knowledge, what the perceived toxicity level of that gig is amongst the coaching fraternity (if any at all)?

Where has it been since 1986? A pretty average program, with a strong year here-and-there. Since they gave up independent status, and couldn't load their schedule with cupcakes and hand-picked officials, they've been a borderline top-20 overall program. Kids these days don't remember their "glory days". I think the right coach could get them back to where they were from '05-'11, but I don't see them as a program that's going to be a consistent national power without somehow convincing an elite coach (a Saban or Meyer) to come there...and that ain't happening.

I think that the main problem they have right now is that nobody wants to deal with the cult and the spectre of paterno. A coach with long time ties to the program would bring some stability, but no way does the school administration want one of those loonies in charge of the program. O'Brien was a good choice to take care of the team during the sanctions, but the cult pretty much pissed him off to the point that he said fuck it.PSU could be a top 20 program again, but they are their own worst enemy. Toxic? It's Fukashim/chernobyl/Three Mile Island level.

I can't imagine why someone with other choices would want to coach in the shadow of an "all-knowing, divinely-inspired" myth. It is a terrible situation in cloud cookooland. Even Schiano will want to think twice.

At most programs, the second guy in after a legendary coach has a better chance of success. But, the Ped State situation is still a dumpster fire of cultists. O'Brien didn't help them by speaking out about the cultists. :lol: Still, it's a big time job and an opportunity for the right guy. Basically, because the sanctions are easing off and that will help in competitiveness on the field. Everything is still in place there for success.
