Penn State Cult (Joe Knew)

this is no longer a valid argument for two reasons. first, there is a playoff system forthcoming. secondly, osu does schedule one big OOC game each year. they can drop a nuke on slappy valley and all the cultists can end up like the folks on The Hills Have Eyes for all I care.

like Cal?

Unless our conference gets better people from the SEC are going to say that it is easy to stack up wins against teams like NW, Indiana, Minn., Maryland, Rutgers, Illinois, Iowa, Neb, Wisky, MSU and a weak Penn State. We NEED at least 4-5 teams in the conference that can beat teams like Florida, LSU, Georgia, and Bama in bowl games (or playoff games) on a consistent basis.

I don't know what year we scheduled them... but I would say average more accurately describes them. And whether or not they were any good... they are not good enough now to makeup for only playing Michigan.

I heard over the weekend that someone said tOSU was probably the only program that will be able to stop the SEC championship dominance. Truthfully I don't think it really matters if PSU gets nuked. If OSU goes undefeated and is eligible they will get in the BCS title game until the playoffs start and then it won't matter.

If OSU was bowl eligible last year we probably would be showing off our new trophy for beating ND. I do agree that I don't see any program in the near future other than the Buckeyes that has a chance to take out the SEC especially when we get to a +1 system.

Undefeated OSU against Undefeated ND and Alabama sits home? Not very likely.

You simply can't ignore the on-the-field difference between the two conferences the last few years. You can't ignore that Alabama plunger raped Michigan while the Buckeyes played hard to win by 5... at home.

The last few years the differnce has shown up in the draft. It shows up in the rankings.

It also shows up in conference recruiting rules, probably in graduation rates and ACT scores too. The SEC operates in a different culture and under different scrutiny. They have also produced some impressive teams, especially since 2006.

Oh, good...the strength of schedule argument again. :bonk:
The point was made that the B1G doesn't need to be good because we play a tough OOC game every year. Which isn't true... we schedule someone and hope they are good, but it always isn't the case. I would say the next 3 years we will be counting on how good our conference is to be considered worthy from people in the south. Unless VT comes out of the woodwork somehow.

Since 2003 we have played, or will play, home/away series with the following:

Washington (split 2003/2007)
Texas
USC
Miami, Fl
Cal
VaTech
Oklahoma
Oregon
Tennessee

We had also scheduled Georgia but that fell through.

Miami was world-class when we scheduled them but were mediocre when we played them. VaTech was consistently solid and occasionally great when we scheduled them but they barely made a bowl game this year and who knows how they'll be when we play them in a few years. Oregon is the chic team right now but with Kelly no longer then head coach they could be absolute shit a decade from now when we play them.

I think we've done more than enough in scheduling solid OOC opponents on an annual basis.

Did you even watch the game this year? Or did you just read the box score? That game should've been a three-TD win (and if you don't believe me, saunter on over to mgoblog where they admitted as much). To imply the Buckeyes did anything but dominate that game (especially in the second half) takes reading the box score and lazily arriving at conclusions to a whole new level.

I think we can all agree that there are a limited amount of teams that even have the opportunity to become a dominate team in the B1G. Penn State is or at least was one of them.

I have to respectfully disagree. At least, since 2000 or so. Other than the occasional year of being near the top of the national rankings (2005, 2008), I get the feeling they're no better than Iowa or Wisconsin. They always found a way to lose 2 or more conference games, and finish 9-3 or so.

Since joining the Big Ten, they've won 171 (counting the vacated wins). That's over 20 years, which makes about 8.5 wins a season. Compare that with Ohio State over the same span (200 wins, 10.0 per season).

Maybe they SHOULD be a dominant team in the conference. But I don't think they ever were, consistently.
