Penn State Cult (Joe Knew)

Odd that during a football game, if a call is missed everyone in Happy Valley sees it and rushes to tell the world about it. If a child screams for help no one hears shit.
Well, it is MUCH more important that they win football games. Did you not get the memo from Lubrano and the R4R folks?

409 FOREVAH!!!!!

You are such a Louis Freeh. :shake:

My report from attending the game:

Got into town Friday night. Stayed with my buddy's brother. Didn't stay with them the next night.

Saturday went well. Not nearly the level of abuse I received in 2009. 99% good reactions. I attribute this to most people having a serious gut-check over the last few years.

That being said, the fact that the fans were all so cordial could be due to the fact I am pure Ohio - handsome, tall, and in good shape.

HOWEVER - the JoePa stuff is kind of sickening. And the alma mater is really strange too. One of the lines in the alma matter talks about 'may no act bring us shame.' At that point in the song, there is a huge crescendo of the fans singing. Essentially defiance against the NCAA and, well, reality. My friend who I went with is a fan of neither team and found it to be really weird and inappropriate.

There was a near fight in the fields after the game that I actually broke up. Once again, I credit my affable manner and handsomeness for distracting the Central PA mutant from fighting what appeared to be one of our beloved Ohio Hill people.

As for the game - speed and strength. We had that. They didn't.

Go Bucks.

So any stories about your trip into the heart of darkness?

It was actually pretty tame. Mostly they just tried to ignore us, to the point of actively looking else where when we would walk by.

One really drunk female student type complained to the usher that my buddy was standing on the seat. The usher patiently tried to explain that; no he is just tall (he's 6'8"). With that being the worst interaction we had I'd have to say PSU fans were a non-factor in regards to the quality of our experience.

As I mentioned in the PSU thread the sheer number of Paterno references everywhere you looked were beyond creepy.

As far as the game itself:
-Regardless of their flaws PSU fans do know how to be loud...well until the 2nd half.
-The annoying electronic lion 'roar' was far less prevalent than in year's past.
-Took us forever to figure out who in the hell #48 was.
-When Ohio State held them scoreless after the 1st qtr I looked at my buddy & said "game over, Buckeyes are going to win it big". (He didn't believe me at the time)
-PSU still pipes music constantly over the loud speakers and the song selection is just bizarre. Misc 80's pop hits? 70's love songs? WTF?
-Jordan Hill (#47) was constantly putting his hands on Ohio State players after plays. I was shocked that he never drew an unsportsmanlike conduct call.
-You could see the PSU players were beaten physically & mentally during the 3rd quarter by their body language. Standing with their heads down, moving slowly, standing silently on the sidelines.
-After the game the 'Nit faithful just vanished. I have no idea how they could disappear that quickly.

I'll be the third to say how tame the Penn State fans were. For the most part, they didn't want to have any confrontation and some even tried to engage us in conversations from politics to our shared hatred for Notre Dame.

Actually, the only two (minor) incidences of confrontation came after the game, which I thought was bizarre. One guy, sarcastically, told us to enjoy our bowl game... then got a little snippy when he apparently hadn't realized that PSU couldn't go to one either. The second was when a group of assholes tried to step up to a sizable group of OSU fans. Once again, the whole group just chuckled and told them to go hit the showers with their boy Jer Bear.

A couple more random notes:

- The Lion scream is the most grating thing on the ears I have ever heard. When I went to the bathroom at halftime I realized it is identical to the sound of a flushing toilet... only amplified by about 1000x

- Their game-day atmosphere is fantastic. From tailgating to listening to the white out make noise all game long, the place was electric. Obviously their stadium doesn't hold sound like the Shoe, but it was twice as loud as I've ever heard Michigan's pitiful excuse for a stadium.

- As said before, their alma mater is bizarre with the whole "no shame" line. I was actually a little embarrassed even to just be standing there and listening to it. Also, the number of Joe Pa shirts was spooky. It's a backwards looking fan base, which makes sense since they're going nowhere for the next decade.

- Whoever is in charge of parking needs to be fired on the spot. We sat in EDU right on the 30-yard line(pic attached) with mostly snobbish alums, and most left in the middle of the third quarter. I now know why. A child with a Hot-Wheels set could come up with a better system than what they have there.

Shiznit - did we chat in the line for the bathroom? You seem to have been sitting close to me and I remember you said you drove in from Washington DC.

We're going to have to get a separate thread going titled
"Disappointed Penn State Fan Photos (year)!"
I think there will be lots of photos! :tongue2:
