Penn State Cult (Joe Knew)

You can easily field an 8-9 win team with 65 scholarships.

These penalties are a freaking joke.

They will be lucky to meet the 65 limit. On top of all the seniors, there will be tons of transfers. They could easily lose 40 or more by the end of the year, and can only replace them with 15. They could be around 50 for the next few years and cap out around 60 in the last year (+ any redshirt freshman from this year, but I doubt many of them will stick around). They could even end up in the 40's in year 2. Most of the transfers will be Freshman and Sophomores. They could literally lose 70 in the next couple of years and only replace them with 30.

I know the penalties are not as severe as they could have been, but Penn State football was destroyed today. Absolutely destroyed.
The penalties destroyed Joe Ped's legacy (as they should have), but the football program will recover from this slap on the wrist fairly quickly.

While I would have liked to have seen harsher penalties, at least these penalties will seriously impact Ped State football for at least 8-9 years. As has been stated, the vacated wins will hurt them more than other schools (although many will still say Joe Ped holds the record).

Personally I believe they should not be allowed to play this year or next year. However, since that didn't happen, at least the penalties carry some bite to them. Plus, with the 5 year probation (which I believe should be 10), there is a good chance some penalties may be increased or lengthened. That culture is not going to change overnight. Some there will continue to play fast and loose with the rules.

IMO Emmert was brilliant. It is unfortunate that there are few sports writers - particularly at ESPN - who understood all of what he was saying. Thus we will continue to hear questions about why the NCAA is not involved in "other criminal cases", suggestions that they have exceeded their role and comparisons to other cases that will be argued as somehow comparable.

I came away with no unanswered questions.

Bonnie Bernstein, filling in for Dan Patrick, said that because of the loss of scholarships that this is like the death penalty. She predicted a mass exodus of transfers from Penn State. They basically have nothing to sell the recruits on now. They can't use tradition, because that was wiped out. State College isn't in a good location, so they can't sell recruits on that either. Penn State is basically dead for the next 10 years, with these penalties+ potential big 10 sanctions.

I don't see a bunch of transfers happening. We're FIVE WEEKS from the start of the season. I just don't see the mass transfers that the media is throwing out there, unless a school makes it really attractive to uproot and go elsewhere in such short notice.

That being said, I await to see what players leave. They will forever be labeled Benedict Arnolds for leaving the cult.

Freshman and Sophomores maybe. I think you will be surprised at the lack of transfers.

If 10 Sophomores and Freshman leave, and on average they lose 25 players per year from graduation and other players leaving (which is normally the average), Penn State will lose 60 players over 2 years. They can only replace them with 30 in that time. That leaves them with 55 scholarship players. So 65 might sound like a slap on the wrist, but I think they will have a tough time getting near that until the end of their sanctions. By that time they will be full of MAC level players. These are pretty harsh sanctions.

BTW...lets say they don't lose any transfers. Well, they have to meet that 65 player limit so their next class can only be 5 if they have zero transfers.
