Penn State Cult (Joe Knew)

Listening to SiriusXM now,

A Ped State Grad (class of 76) just called in. He thought the vacating of wins was a bit much (of course), but did say that he thought that the NCAA should have required Ped State to fire the BOT or not be able to compete in the NCAA.

By not compete in the NCAA, did he mean banning the football team, or leaving the NCAA? if he meant leaving the NCAA, that is just stupid. No one would follow Penn State, so who would they play?

Basically, what happened here was the same damn thing in that movie "Deep Impact".

The comet was split into two pieces. The first piece hit and killed a bunch of people, but the planet killer was destroyed.

I blame the Black President ( - there always seems to be a Black President in these end of world movies)

It's glaringly obvious that the culture at PSU is still rotten from a vocal portion of the BOT on down. My concern is that these penalties are harsh enough to let PSU believe they've been punished sufficiently, so all they have to do is wait it out and bask in their eventual redemption, but not sufficient to force change. In 2015, it won't be, "Our school has changed for the better and that couldn't happen now," it will be, "We've had our punishment so drop it." I don't like it. They really need a time-out.

If 10 Sophomores and Freshman leave, and on average they lose 25 players per year from graduation and other players leaving (which is normally the average), Penn State will lose 60 players over 2 years. They can only replace them with 30 in that time. That leaves them with 55 scholarship players. So 65 might sound like a slap on the wrist, but I think they will have a tough time getting near that until the end of their sanctions. By that time they will be full of MAC level players. These are pretty harsh sanctions.

BTW...lets say they don't lose any transfers. Well, they have to meet that 65 player limit so their next class can only be 5 if they have zero transfers.

I tend to agree. Any one of the punitive line items isn't all that bad, certainly something from which a program can recover. That said, the total list is harshly appropriate. If the goal is to rebuild a program that has a memory of these events you have to retain a portion of that program as intact to pass down the pain, as it were.

Could have been a lot worse for them, but the NCAA could have gone a lot lighter as well. With the anticipated fall out from this ruling and additional fall out from the negative PR from the long list of civil cases, the impact on the program will be such that they are barely hanging on...

You can easily field an 8-9 win team with 65 scholarships.

These penalties are a freaking joke.

The key is the bowl ban for 4 years...

They will be lucky to meet the 65 limit. On top of all the seniors, there will be tons of transfers. They could easily lose 40 or more by the end of the year, and can only replace them with 15. They could be around 50 for the next few years and cap out around 60 in the last year (+ any redshirt freshman from this year, but I doubt many of them will stick around). They could even end up in the 40's in year 2. Most of the transfers will be Freshman and Sophomores. They could literally lose 70 in the next couple of years and only replace them with 30.

THIS... 40 might be a low number... especially since teams taking in Penn State players won't go against their 85 schollie limit for a year.

Then once the team gets decimated if you are a recruit would you want to go there? AND NEVER PLAY IN A BOWL! You might get a few lifers to come, but that might be 5 tops, the other recruits will be lower level recruits not wanted by a good team.

So for the next few years Penn State will be lucky to win 4-5 games in a season. Maybe in year 3 or 4 they can start getting recruits, (playing time plus bringing Penn St back) but that will be hard sledding especially if another team in the area (Pitt?) becomes a winner and gives local players a better place to go to.

While the schollie limit itself isn't horrible, USC level really... the difference is the bowl ban being so long making it hard to sell recruits. Look at USC, their bowl ban is over and just now their schollie limits are hitting, so the recruits they are getting are 15 studs because they can play for titles still. At Penn State... that ain't happening.

Same here. Again, wtf is the point of the 'death penalty' when you don't execute anybody. They may as well strike the rule out of the books cause they've only used it once.

Not to mention that SMU is probably pretty pissed off at this point, and any school in the future that MAY happen to get the death penalty will always look back at this case and say that the punishment doesn't fit the crime...

All they've done is open a Pandora's Box for themselves....

Exactly! There won't be redemption and remorse from the Joe Ped Cult, only revenge.

Heres a question no one is answering, will Penn State have enough players to field a team this year? I expect the transfers to be LARGE

It's not going to be that easy for a lot of current players to transfer before this season. Most teams are already at their scholarship limits for this season. Sure, the SEC guys might find a couple more medical hardships to create a spot or two. But most PedState players are simply not good enough for another team to go to that much trouble. Best opportunity for nearly all current players will probably be to treat this season as tryouts for the rest of their career.

Remember how the Big Ten Conference divided the divisions based on historic winning (Ohio State, TSUN, Penn State and Nebraska)?

The divisions are no longer balanced based on historic winning (since PSU just vacated all wins since 1998).
