Penn State: 'We will take responsibility' for whatever Sandusky-related investigation finds


In a story published today, The Chronicle of Higher Education cited interviews with nine unnamed persons contacted by the investigative team led by Louis Freeh.

Some of them said they were asked specifically about the relationship between top university administrators and Penn State's athletic department, and whether university student judicial processes were sometimes interfered with to protect student athletes.

The article said that among emails turned over to the Freeh team are messages written by former President Graham Spanier and Wendell V. Courtney, Penn State's former general counsel, "which describe steps the two men took to protect players."

Jesus, I'm no genius, but I think I understand the English language on a decent level and I did stay in a Holiday Inn Express last week. Can anyone play Devil's Advocate and tell me how that doesn't sound exactly like "Joe" gave orders not to take it beyond "the person involved?"

Holy Fuck. That is even worse than what I imagined might be in the e-mails.

This is what kills me in reading some of the PSU fans responses to all of this. They act like Paterno was just some football coach who had to follow a chain of command. The administration answered to Joe Paterno for the last 30 years and anyone who doesn't think that the decisions went from Joe to the administration is being intentionally dense.

Ummm, that's exactly what the e-mail says! Seriously, there could be time-stamped video footage of Sandusky and JoePed pulling a Wichita Lunch Pail on some poor kid and high fiving over his back, and the cult would still find a way to absolve Dear Leader From Whom All Wisdom Flows from any knowledge or responsibility.

I am sure Joe wanted to handle player discipline the last 10 years the way it was handled the first 52 years he was at Penn State. In 1970 it wasn't a problem. In 1980 it wasn't a problem. In 1990 it wasnt a problem. In 2000 it wasnt a problem In 2012, its a problem. If this violated any NCAA rules, then I will change my opinion of him.

The Freeh investigators will have to do more than "appear to find it problematic" that some top Penn State officials had resisted adopting athletic oversight practices in use at many other schools. Show me the NCAA violations and I will agree with you. I only see one of the historically top 5 cleanest major NCAA institutions when it comes to following NCAA rules across the board. Where's the problem?
