Penn State Cult (Joe Knew)

There is no comparison with Ohio State. Ohio State had to fire two legendary coaches for off-field [Mark May] in my lifetime.......

Were there student riots?
Were there petitions by former players demanding their coach's honor be restored?
Were there rogue trustees suing their own university?
Was there an Ohio Staters 4 Responsible Stewardship group formed that fought for years to clear their names?
Were there Rallies For Resignation?
Did some imbecilic former running back harass the board of trustees and travel around the country uninvited trying to meet with various university Presidents in the service of the fired coach?

As I've said many times, there is a large and significant portion of the Penn State alumni and fan bases who can't separate their own sense of identity and self-worth from the Paterno myth. We Are Because You Were sums it up perfectly.

Contrast that with the large and significant portion of OSU fans who wanted Tressel fired for lying to the NCAA over discounted tattoos.

Without getting into the psychosis of the individuals, I think PSU fans in general are most susceptible to forming a cult due to the simple fact the schools only success was tied to just the one man.

Ohio State tradition is focused on the team. The coaches who did well in their time of stewardship are celebrated but it's always as Ohio State football coach from x to y. It's never "JoePa U".

So freaking true! I remember working with a guy who went to Ped St, and played baseball there. He said he highly doubted that JoePA knew about anything Sandusky was doing. And even went as far as referring to JoePA, as "God" when he met him and took a picture with him before graduation. If that's not cultish behavior idk what is. I've never heard a Buckeye fan EVER refer to any of our coaches or players as a diety in a serious manner. This dude was completely serious with the JoePA reference, creeped me the hell out!

Sounds like the Paternos are going on a fishing expedition to try and discredit the "victims.*" It's one thing to not want to believe such things about your father. It's another to be using legal channels to try and discredit those who suffered horrendously because of the old man's cover up. That family is just pure fucking scum, and I wish nothing but misery and painful face aids deaths upon them.

*or whatever people are calling them.

Dear ISIS:
Just in case you folks have been looking for a target you could attack without fear of retribution from 99.9999999999999% of the American population...

My son is a rising senior at UP. He and all of his buddies talk about Joe as if he were still the coach. Sue is as revered as ever. Sometimes the Paterno's are at the same mass on Sunday's that my son attends and I'm sure to get an excited call later that day. My daughters, both in high school, and their friends talk about Joe as if he were still at Penn State. Maybe Sue and Jay's high profiles have something to do with this but none-the-less it's true.
More likely, the exact opposite occurs with these kids. They are college kids. Making sure that things are made right for Coach Paterno and his family is a thing that will become their legacy.
Flying back from the bowl game, I happened to sit next to some parents of "Lionettes" sp. We had a conversation about the game etc. and eventually Joe came up. I shared a few pics I had on my phone of JVP and a few stories. They called their daughter back from her seat in the front, explaining that she was a big JVP Fan. She was a very nice young lady and seemed very enthused about my stories. I don't think his legend is going anywhere soon.
Joe Paterno's legacy will ALWAYS be with us. His spirit will remain with us forever, in the hearts and souls of every player and every coach at Penn State.
That's bull crapola. Kids at Penn State will always respect and honor JoePa. The love for him is eternal.

Several posts as well saying that Woody, Bear, etc. are all remembered by their fans...which is true. But not like this.

There's a documentary on all this junk on Netflix. "Happy Valley", or something. Anyway, I remember one part after the football season was done, but before he died, they had to take him to the hospital. I guess Sue Paterno drove, but no one wanted the media, who was stalking their house, to know he was sick. So they had him lie down in the back seat with a blanket over him. Soon after, they announced that he had cancer.

They don't want his fans to know he's sick. They don't want them to see him sick. The masses can only see the "strong Joe". Very strong smell of "dictator" or "cult leader" to me. Sounds like something Stalin or Castro would do - except maybe they'd have doctors show up at their palace, whereas "Saint Joe" was "too humble" to live in a palace, and it would look even worse if doctors showed up at his house.
