Penn State Cult (Joe Knew)

Restoring "Joe's" wins and giving them back their bowl games wasn't enough for them. They still want to see the rest of the teams in the NCAA burn.

Second post (StinkStankStunk):

He insists that the NCAA only did what Penn State's leadership asked them to do: bring the football team to its knees. Why would a school WANT its football team destroyed?
Because they were jealous of themselves for doing things the right way. Duh.

StinkStankStunk is one of the my favorite Cultists on BWI. He is especially entertaining when michnittlion brings some FAX and EVIDENTS to the table. It is every Cultist's dream that the NCAA, Mark Emmert, the Board of Trustees, the Penn State Alumni Association, ESPN, Jim Delany, every other Big 10 school, Jim Boeheim, Sara Ganim all somehow get destroyed for ruining Joesus' reputation.

The Cult logic for why the BoT wanted to destroy the football program was because several members of the BoT (John Surma, in particular) hated Joesus over a dispute between Joesus and Surma nephew (Vic) while Vic Surma was on the PSU football team.

Let's all cry about the lack of respect our quarterback got. OK - I didn't read many comments. But I thought this was funny:

And he didn't even have to "practice school".

Standard cult responses..... The test is flawed....... The guy who invented the test - Mr. Wonderlic - is a moron....... Hack didn't even care how he did on the test...... regardless of the scores, Hack is obviously smarter that Jones....... Wonderlic scores don't equate to NFL success......

It's incredibly surprising the amount of thinly veiled racism I've seen/heard living in Philly and traveling through Central PA in just 18 months....and I grew up in the foothills of NC.

Seriously, fuck them all.

Mr. Wonderlic is probably from Pitt!

Look, there are some real nutcases that call themselves Ohio State fans as well. Every team has them. Good moderation over many years means that only an occasional Buckeye nutjob gets on this board and then that person doesn't last very long.

That nod to transparency in place, what in the hell is wrong with those people in Pennsylvania? Seriously? Is there nuclear water there or maybe toxic waste? What?

The suck over there is of epic proportions. It creates such a vacuum that they must have terrible winter weather, low fronts and snow fall and all that.

The facts and evidence are that everyone has flaws. With Woody Hayes, you got one helluva temper and the frequent explosion that tempered his greatness. With Joe Paterno, you got a guy who built a legend by feasting on weak teams and the inability to walk away from his egotistical race to become the winningest coach of all time, even at the expense of child abuse.

No decent person in their right mind could sleep at night, knowing that someone was abusing children in their facilities. No decent person could excuse a man for thinking head had done right by making one pathetic attempt to report that monster to the people we entrust with putting such monsters behind bars.

The world will never move on until these people move on. They bring this on themselves.

For the record, I moved here 5 years ago and love it.

South (and west) Philly is an urban jungle. The sticks are the same as the sticks anywhere else.

There is something just completely off about the Penn Staters though, I mean icky kind of off.

There's a reason why --- when people here link to "crazy Penn State fans", the links are (generally) to BWI as opposed to other PSU boards. In the longer-term, the moderators can dictate the direction that a board takes.

I do reject your theory that it is a "those people in Pennsylvania" problem. Paints with way too wide of a brush. It's a BWI issue, not a Pennsylvania or Penn State fan issue.

FWIW, I grew up in Michigan, schooled in Pennsylvania, now live (well, sort of, right across the Ohio River) in Ohio. I strongly believe that in the aggregate, U-M, OSU and PSU fans are all basically the exact same. Mostly good folk, although with a non-insignificant percentage of nutcases and weirdos.

FWIW, I've always thought the "feasted on weak teams" criticism of Paterno was a bit unfair. YES --- Penn State's schedules were weak when Paterno took over as Head Coach. Too many games vs. Army and Navy, not enough leaving the Northeast.

But starting around the mid-1970s, things did improve.

Looking at the strength-of-schedule metric on college football reference (I only use this strength-of-schedule metric because it is so readily available, but other strength-of-schedule metrics will show the same trend):

PSU's strength-of-schedule from 1977 to 1986 ranked (annually): 16th, 33rd, 9th, 9th, 1st, 3rd, 11th, 4th, 16th, and 13th. 1977-1986 was probably Paterno's best 10-year-stretch and those are not weak strength-of-schedule rankings. 3rd and 13th best strengths-of-schedule in the 2 MNC years. Average 10-2 through that stretch of rather rigorous schedules, and win a couple MNCs to boot? Yes, a Coach who does that has a good chance of being considered a legend.

Fair enough. When I refer to "Crazy Penn State fans", I'm really talking about their message boards. (I forget which is Rivals and which is Scout, but I've seen crazy posts on both sites.) And I know all fanbases have their crazies. (Except Ohio State, of course - we're all perfectly normal individuals who treat each other and other fans with the utmost respect.) Message board fans are a vocal minority, from what I understand. (Although, a couple of guys on here insist that they are not just a small minority in Pennsylvania, and I can only be glad I don't have to live with those crump-faces.)

I've seen it posts (probably on here) Penn State's record was against a bunch of weak eastern teams during Paterno's time at Penn State. I want to say it included Temple, Rutgers, Pitt, West Virginia, Syracuse.. maybe UConn. And then their record against the rest of the world. Of course, I don't remember the numbers, so don't take this as gospel, but it was something like 0.800 against those teams and 0.550 outside of those teams. That doesn't take into account the timing - maybe most of those games were before 1977.

I'd say that if we take away the scandal, Paterno might have been "great". "Legend"? Possibly. But he chose to cover up a scandal. I think the rest of the world, in that position, would be to yell at McQueary to get to the police station, and consider firing McQueary for waiting as long as he did to tell someone. But he chose to "tell his boss". He's always going to carry that weight.
