jakenick06, I lived through Apartheid. The problem is that people within closed societies begin to perceive the world around them with a shared but warped lens. Penn State meant something decent to those folks and its exposure as something very sordid is a personal affront precisely because they identified so closely with Penn State. In time, they will see the situation in the light of day.
I'm not sure apartheid helps that notion. Took 100 years between Civil War and Apartheid to end... and many of those States still have Confederate-linked State Flags (including the state flagship University we just played)
Granted, Penn State isn't as bad an issue and the process may be faster... but I suspect a lot of these people will take it to their graves.
