Peach Bowl: #1 Georgia vs #4 tOSU, Sat 12/31 8 ET on ESPN

I always miss stuff like this when I watch the game, but this is likely what tipped the Dawgs staff off on the fake punt/timeout.

Bucks had 12 men on the field.

For clarity, I think by time OSU snapped the ball, they had gotten one of the gunmen off the field.

I think OSU’s late “substitution” of a player off the field immediately tipped Kirby off…..bc OSU didn’t get aligned properly on it. You could tell OSU was struggling with alignment prior to snap….it wasn’t a smooth transition at all.

It wasn’t an illegal substitution bc OSU was never in a huddle. They ran the extra player off for 11 on field….running that player off tipped our hand which led to TO.

Id have to watch again to confirm but I can’t bring myself to do it yet.

By letter of law, Mitch Rossi committed a penalty on the 4th and 1 play he was called for illegal motion.

I watched at least 13 illegal motions in NFL today where guys were moving forward prior to snap.

That was a pretty soft call you don’t see much. Again, he was moving forward prior to snap…..but football at both college and NFL level has really let it slide when guys are moving a bit forward.

We made mistakes, including that one, but we also had horrible luck…
Yes as you stated it was a penalty but what galled me was the official made the call late. Watching the replay it was if he thought to himself, “well I better call it since it it looks like Ohio State will make the first down. Can’t have that happen.”

Oddly enough, the 1975 Rose Bowl was not before my time, I was at that game, near the goal line and close to the field, two rows in front of the USC band. Close enough to have to force myself not to turn around and jam the trombone constantly playing ‘Fight On’ in my ear back into the guy’s face. And the 1976 Rose Bowl loss to UCLA was more painful, but I digress.

In the third quarter of the 1975 Rose Bowl, with the Buckeyes up 7-3, Neal Colzie made a pick and ran it back inside the ten, then spiked the ball after he was forced out of bounds a few yards from where I was jumping up and down. He spiked it excitedly, after making a huge play, not in anybody’s face or to show off for the cameras. He got flagged for an unsportsmanlike penalty, which made it first and goal from the 24 (these days it would be 1st and ten after a rule change, let alone that it probably wouldn’t draw a flag these days). The Buckeyes didn’t score on that possession, and another late red zone FG allowed USC to be within striking distance so that a bomb with just over 2 minutes left to J.K. McKay (head coach’s son), followed by a diving 2-point conversion catch by Shelton Diggs allowed USC to prevail 18-17. At the end, a 62-yard FG attempt by Tom Skladany fell short. Later that day, an Orange Bowl loss by UPI #1 Bama (to #8 Notre Dame) gave USC the Coaches #1 ranking, which would have gone to the Buckeyes, who were #2 in the Coaches Poll going in.

But I’m not bitter about missing out on witnessing tOSU win a Natty. Here’s a NY Times article I found about the spike.
Yes I remember watching that on TV and was dumbstruck as a a 13 year old why that was a penalty. Everybody at that time was spiking the ball….

I listened to a good podcast that kind of put this season in perspective.

First.... OSU lost (pretty much) 3 of their playmakers in JSN, Henderson and Williams. Yet still did good enough to win, and it constantly changed the teams approach to the games. They also lost Stover towards the beginning of the game, and MH Jr. for the 4th quarter of the Peach Bowl.

Those are huge losses, and the pieces had to be cogged up with less talented players.

As to the defense. Yes Knowles gets paid very big money to win these types of games. However, again OSU recruiting of quality players has fell into disrepair for years. We have what we have, and some of the players are very good, and others are just kind of competent.

With that said, turn this whole thing around, and look at UGA's defense which is their bread and butter. They do have mostly 4 and 5 stars 2 deep on their D. Yet, OSU put up 41 points without many of their key offensive players. That's pretty impressive.

Nope. In those days it was illegal to spike. NFL, yes. NCAA, nope, illegal and carrying a big stick Penalty.you may recall that for a brief time frame the ncaa made dunking illegal in basketball.
I think you missed the part “as a thirteen year old” couldn’t understand the penalty. The NFL games were on all the time and OSU was on 2 maybe 3 times a year. Obviously as an adult you know the rules a whole lot better than you did as a kid….
