OC/WR Coach Brian Hartline (Official Thread)

Which Buckeye had the greatest impact on the Ohio State history of the position he played?

  • Brian Hartline

  • Other (This is the wrong answer)

I hope he keeps saying no.

Hartline could improve in developing depth.

Marv and EE played every snap until games were blow outs.
The played nearly 80 snaps v Michigan.
Fleming was basically in the same boat.
How we could not have another WR on the roster capable of 5 non-garbage snaps a game is bizare.

There is no way they don't get gassed at points where they could use a play off every now and then.
How engaged would they be as blockers knowing they will be running a post the next play.
How hard it would it be to go full tilt for 80 snaps knowing there is no chance for a play off.

Assuming he is also involved in the passing game I'm not sold he is a wizard in terms of scheme's.
Shouldn't we expect wr's of that quality to get open with more frequency?
It seemed we were overly dependent on Stroud throwing a dart to a well covered receiver making a catch in traffic.

No doubt he is a terrific recruiter and developer of talent (at least those on the 1st team).

There is no way He (who has never been a coordinator) should be ranked higher currently the Luke who has been a DC under Meyer, a historically successful HC at UC, and now the HC at one of the better programs in the B1G.

If Day fails one of the takeaways should that this was his first HC job.

I'd also be leery of hiring a HC whos has never been a HC and is known for WR's after our questions now.

The simple response to this is Dabo Swinney who was promoted from WR coach to HC with the same questions…..did he understand enough schematically?

He did a great job building an elite coaching staff and took on a more figurehead role…..which worked very well, but seems to have hit a rough patch as the recent coordinator hires aren’t going over that well.

That said, with Hartline’s recruiting and connections in football, I’d absolutely hand him the keys to a P5 program…..I’d argue he may even be more important to tOSU than Day (it’s a stretch but his WR room is a huge reason Day keeps landing elite QB’s).

If Hartline leaves, I think Day is on far less solid footing.

And if it’s not UC, PLENTY of other programs are targeting him. The only thing to keep him in Columbus is his relationship with Day, love of tOSU and city of Columbus, and hopefully the fulfillment of teaching the true craft in being an elite WR.

Because if he has higher aspirations, it’s just a matter of time unfortunately.

Ryan Day's offense and QBs provide a lot of positives for coach Hartline though.

Either way we'll be fine.

Besides all these 5 star WRs have won us exactly zero titles. Not saying he's to blame but certainly it's not like the WRs are winning us titles.

Yeah, regardless who’s the WR coach, Day and Dennis need to continue bringing in top QB talent, Frye needs to bring in top OL talent, and the skill position players will work themselves out.
Smith had a lot of misses at WR when he was coach, but Barrett, Jones and Haskins made many of them look great!

He’s going to interview for a reason.

Always take the interview. Even if you end up not being offered or taking the gig the experience is good.

But he saw what the UC job did for Fickell. Hartline would be foolish to not at least interview. He may want a new challenge and I couldn't blame him if he leaves.

Now imagine Day trying to win titles with less than 5 star WRs.

Results would probably be the same.

No big ten title let alone winning the division lol.

Our best WRs largely weren't even 5 stars and IMO that 4 star level recruitment would continue regardless.

Chris Olave, Michael Thomas, Devin Smith, Paris Campbell, Johnny Dixon, Evan Spencer, Marvin Harrison JR, KJ Hill, etc were not 5 stars and a lot of these players were recruited by Zach Smith even.

Speaking of him. Zach Smith did a great job with zone 6 and I'm confident we can find a coach similar to him to continue on if Coach Hartline moves on.

I'm not saying I want Hartline to go but we are hardly fucked if he leaves. Btw if Hartline does stay... the one advantage Smith had over Hartline was the way his WRs blocked. Our blocking was terrible all year and IMO that certainly is part of identity. His job should be to teach better routes etc it should be to get zone 6 more invested in our running game.

After reflection, losing Hartline would suck, but they can get a quality NFL caliber WR coach to fill in. The recruiting on the other hand. That will sting.

The more pressing concern for the Buckeye's is for them to figure out the play calling issues. Literally they have 4 OC's (along with Alford and Hartline) and nobody can make that offense look like it was in sync. Doesn't jive.

If they figure out the offense production issues it will work itself out, even if we lose Hartline.
