Former Ohio State Buckeye John Hicks has died at the age of 65.

According to his family, Hicks passed away due to complications from diabetes.

His wife, Cindy, said that John loved his family, teammates, friends and Ohio State.

The Cleveland native played for the Buckeyes from 1970-73. He was a two-time first-team All-Big Ten and two-time first-team All-American during his career.

His big season came in 1973 when Hicks won the Lombardi Award and Outland Trophy. He also finished runner-up for the Heisman Trophy, the last lineman to finish that high.

In 2009, Hicks was inducted into the Rose Bowl Hall of Fame. He was the first player to start in three consecutive Rose Bowls.

He has also been inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame and The Ohio State University Athletics Hall of Fame.

After college, Hicks was a first-round draft pick of the New York Giants and garnered the NFC Rookie of the Year accolade.

He played five seasons in the National Football League before an injury ended his career.

Ouch. Hits too close to home right now as my mother is in the hospital with kidney issues related to her diabetes and is just a hair older then him.

Too boot, I shared a number of classes with one of his daughters back in elementary and middle school. Never ready to lose a parent.

I did not know him but met him. He seemed to be very "comfortable in his own skin" and you would not have guessed that he was who he was. One immediately liked him. It sounds like he lived a good life and send his family condolences.

Watching him run out of the tunnel first before every game is one of my best memories as a Buckeye. RIP John Hicks, you were one of the great ones.
Those were my favorite memories of John also especially when he ran out at the crap Stadium up north in his last game up there and gave a shot at tearing down that ugly banner that they have.

My condolences to his family and friends.
