OT Andy Miller (official thread)

Great pick-up. Another versatile athlete with a solid academic background. I'm guessing his high school competition was at a fairly high level. Nice surprise to start the weekend. Guess the quiet period is over.

I actually think it will be the other way around. Decent looking TE prospect but I see bigger potential at the tackle position. Ballard is definetly the more athletic of the two. Either way great pickup and seems like a good kid plus a great student.:osu:

Honestly they could both end up there. I think it is just JT recruiting his Power guys.

I love the pickup and want to say congratulations to Andy.

Or they could both end up at TE (imagine that!) Lost in all the hand-wringing over losing Mangold, Sims, Holmes, Youboty, the LBs, and Whitner is the fact that hardly anybody seems to realize that TE is by far the thinnest position on this team right now. With Hamby gone, all the guys that are coming back the sum of their production and experience doesn't even add up to one proven TE. While there's some good potential there with Nicol, Frost, and Smith - but there's also opportunities for new guys to step in and contribute immediately by either playing or providing depth that we just don't have at that position as it stands right now.

I remember when this offer went out and I loved it. Everyday when things were getting close I checked his thread first hoping he would commit. Comming down the line I lost some hope because it sounded as Pitt was in control. This very well may be my favorit commit just based on the suprise factor. I Love it.

While all this is very true, I think it will be hard for them to grow out of the TE position. Remember Nicol and Smith will only be a sophmores next year so they are here for 3 more years, so hopefully we can land some true TE's in next years class. I think one of these guys could possbily stay at TE all four years, but I think both of them will become o-lineman.

Tight end Andy Miller of Washington, Pa., last night became the 15 th member of the Ohio State recruiting class of 2006.

Miller, 6 feet 6, 250 pounds, of Trinity High School, chose OSU over Pittsburgh, Indiana and others. He made his choice public before playing in a basketball game for Trinity last night.

A three-star prospect (out of five), according to Rivals.com, Miller is the second tight end in the class, joining Jake Ballard of Springboro. Together, they offer the Buckeyes some flexibility, recruiting analyst Bill Kurelic said.

"For starters, they are two of the top tight end prospects in the Big Ten region," Kurelic said. "And then in Jake Ballard, even though he will be going in as a tight end, he is also a very good defensive prospect.

"As for Andy Miller, with his size, it would not be out of the question to see him move down the line one day. But he definitely will be going in as a tight end."
The Buckeyes had to scramble at tight end last season after backup Rory Nicol suffered a foot injury in preseason camp and then senior starter Ryan Hamby missed several games the last half of the year because of a knee sprain. Marcel Frost became the starter, and Andree Tyree, a senior who was converted from guard, offered some blocking help.

Trinity's Miller picks OSU over Pitt, WVU
By Jerry DiPaola
TRIBUNE-REVIEW
Saturday, January 14, 2006

Trinity tight end Andrew Miller said he could see himself proudly wearing the colors of all four of the schools that were recruiting him. In the end, though, he stood up at a news conference at the high school Friday and settled on Ohio State over Pitt, West Virginia and Indiana.
"It was the toughest decision I ever made in my life," said Miller, a second-team Associated Press all-state player. "But in the end, I kept coming back to Ohio State."
The Big Ten schools wanted Miller, a member of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Rewiew's Terrific 25 and All-Quad A teams, to play tight end. Meanwhile, Big East members Pitt and West Virginia were eager to transfer his 6-foot-7, 265-pound frame into an offensive tackle. But he said the chance to play the more high-profile position for the Buckeyes was not the determining factor in Miller's decision.

"That was just a plus," he said. "The thing I was looking for was the right kind of people, my right kind of people," he said.
Miller said Ohio State coach Jim Tressel offered a winning sales pitch.
"It was his understanding of life in general, really," Miller said. "He really has his priorities straight as far as doing the right thing and religious beliefs. That is the kind of guy I want in charge of me.
"Guys (at Ohio State) have their priorities straight, have a vision for where they want to go and know how to win and all those type of things. All-around, it is the best place for me."
He said Tressel tried the usual recruiting tactics -- sending text messages and visiting the Miller home -- but he also went one step further.
"I have a friend who is a ridiculous Buckeye fan and (Tressel) was great about signing something special."
Miller caught only seven passes for 193 yards and two touchdowns and he averaged more than 27 yards per catch. His chief duty was blocking for the powerful Trinity running game that featured Ben Jennings, who was second in the WPIAL with 1,928 yards rushing.
"Coach (Ed Dalton) used me in situations like two-point conversions and downfield passes. I didn't get many catches, but when I did they were big ones."

Him adding 40lbs will not be that much of an issue once he gets into the weight room at OSU. Correctme if I am wrong but he is not much smaler then when Barton came in right.

Rivals listed Barton at 6-6, 265; Miller at 6-6, 249

Scout listed Barton at 6-6, 275; Miller at 6-7, 255

Regardless, he will get his first shot at TE. If that doesn't pan out or he naturally grows too big, then he moves to OT.

Very nice comparison. A couple other guys that come to mind are Eric Winston from Cryami. If I remember right he played some te against us in 02' and Robert Gallery was a converted TE to T.

I think him and Ballard have a great shot at becoming very good tackles in a few years.
