OSU Men's Basketball Recruiting/Projections/General Discussions

Good breakdown. I thought about doing it, but I decided to wait for someone else to do it instead.

We will be much deeper, in my opinion. Thompson and Ross could contribute right away.

We'll have to find a replacement for Diebler, but I'm sure someone will step up.

No matter how you slice it, this is the favorite in the Big Ten and likely a top 5 team preseason next year.

I see the team in the 10-15 ranking at the end of the year. Considering who we are losing and how young the team will be I would consider that to be a great job by Matta.

My opinion can change based on who is leaving early across the cbb landscape.

Ross is a great shooter from anywhere on the floor, so that will be big. He looks great at creating his own shot, has a good turnaround (something no one on the team currently has), and can shoot right over you no matter how closely he's being guarded.

At 6'8 he can also attack the rim with ease. He could be a star when Matta makes him play to his potential.

I'm excited to see what he can do in a Buckeye uniform. I think he'll see big minutes next year.

Edit: And if you want to see what Sam Thompson can do, check this out.

He's also rated as a top 10 passer in the whole country by Rivals, and a very good defender. So he should be able to contribute immediately as well.

I could see us being nearly as good. Ranking really doesn't matter though, as we all know. Hopefully this team will be better built for a deeper run in the tournament.

I love Ross and Thompson's length, and I think Thompson could be a versatile player on both ends of the floor for us. Ross is more of a Thomas-type with a "score first" mentality. I'm hearing he'll really have to work on his D before he gets here.

I'm excited to see what Shannon Scott will do. I could definetly see him starting alongside Craft, just like when we had 2 PGs starting with Butler and Conley. Then again, I'm excited to see what damage Lenzelle Smith Jr. could do with a full, healthy preseason, being a combo PG/SG himself.

We will really miss the 3's that Lighty and Diebs contributed. Interested to see who will step-up and help be another deadly option beyond the arc. Lighty, in particular, was the soul of the team and the ultimate "glue guy". He's looking more and more irreplaceable on this team next year the more I think about it.

Agreed. I should have said "could be" instead of "likely". Not sure how every team around the country is going to shake-out or look like at the start of next season, but this is still going to be a highly thought of team come next year.

If Buford and Sully's statements about returning weren't just post game, depression induced, I think next years team could be nearly as good as this years unit. An offseason of practice should help Siberts and Thomas' three point shooting, as well as that of Craft. Buford should be even better, which is saying a lot. Ross is known as a scorer, so he could add some offense as well. I also heard Matta talking about Ravenel and it sounds like he has a pretty good back to the basket game as well as decent touch, so you could possibly see he and Sully on the court at the same time, depending on defensive matchups. Also, having Scott and Craft on the floor will put pressure on opposing defenses at times.

Defensively, Lighty will be missed, as he was one of the best, most versatile defenders, I've ever seen. But, Sibert showed stretches of stepping up and playing D, Thompson seems to have an affinity for D, and has the length and athletecism to be a great defender, we know about Craft. LSmith has the skills and talent to be a very good defender as well. Williams can block shots and rebound, and we know that if Ross and Thomas want to see the court as much as they hope to, they will have to defend, and both have the size and athletecism to be at least average defenders. A guy to watch could be Weatherspoon, he has the raw talent to be a beast on D, if he buys into the idea that that is his ticket to playing time. Lighty was just so much of an asset, because he could guard 4 spots in a pinch, allowing Matta to often times have him as a mismatch when tOSU was on offense.

Talent wise, next years team will not take a back seat to this years squad, it will all depend on how they jell and play together, and if enough offensive threats and defensive stalwarts emerge.

Not speaking for mc, but I'm guessing it's more about what we know about Williams.
I know he's a McDonald's All-American, and I know Ravenel averaged 2 points a game at a second-division ACC team in two (2008-2010) seasons. No slam on Ravenel, since past performance does not guarantee future returns, but the math doesn't seem to work here.

Thad Matta has done a great job of bringing in young talent and have several top prospects interested. Any chance they are able to land 2 or 3 of the top 25 guys in 2012 class?

Ohio State is kicking out pros ... period. The issue for OSU the next few years will be expanding their recruiting territory. There aren't a ton of recruitable bigs in 2012 for the Bucks, therefore you've seen them mentioned with guys like Tony Parker, Robert Carter and others from the South. Matta is attempting to expand his recruiting empire because the region may not be as stacked. Can't blame him.

Team Ohio, a team of high school stars headed by Ohio State Ohio State recruit Marc Loving (Toledo St. John's), Mark Donnal (Wayne Trace) and several top local players went 6-2 and finished third in Barila Memorial Basketball Tournament in Varese, Italy.

The team that The Hoop's Bobby Kortsen took there included Aaron Jackson of Gahanna, Daniel Aronowitz of Columbus Academy, Jared Kortsen of Dublin Coffman, Antonio Bisutti and Brad Schulze of Dublin Scioto, Tyree Gaiter of Cleveland Heights and Nigel Hayes of Toledo Whitmer. The tournament was won by Siena, the Italian national champions.
I have no idea if Ohio State is interested in any of these guys except for Loving:)

I think this new rule affects recruiting. Article also tells the new regulations for football academics.

Basketball players must decide before the first day of the spring signing period, typically mid-April, to pull out of the draft and retain their college eligibility. This year, players have until May 8 to withdraw from the draft.

"For players, I just don't see how that helps them a whole lot," Butler forward Matt Howard said Thursday during a shootaround at Hinkle Fieldhouse. "It almost makes it pointless to put your name out and not sign with an agent."

The legislation wasn't intended to help players.

Coaches wanted the earlier date so they could find replacements for those making an early jump to the NBA.
