I was at the Schottenstein Center for a while this afternoon to interview coach Thad Matta for a story I'm working on for down the road. The subject of recruiting came up, and Matta mentioned that the 2011 class could number as many as five.
This surprised me because Matta said earlier this year that he was looking to add a big man and a big wing to point guard Shannon Scott.
He got the big wing in 6-foot-8 LaQuinton Ross. But this sounds as if he'll take another if 6-6 Sam Thompson chooses the Buckeyes over Florida. Thompson made an official visit to campus last weekend.
That would be three. And that means Matta would take two more if he can get two from the group of big men he is recruiting. The group reportedly includes Mikael Hopkins (official visit last weekend), junior-college sophomore Robert Goff (official visit next weekend), Amir Williams, Desmond Hubert and Deng Leek.
Another big man off the board
Robert Goff, a 6-foot-9, 230-pound sophomore at Hutchinson Community College in Kansas, was scheduled to make an official visit to Ohio State this weekend. Cancel that.
Scout.com reports tonight that Goff has committed to Oklahoma.
Coach Thad Matta told me Friday that he could take as many as five commitments for the class of 2011, which currently numbers three with Sam Thompson's pledge earlier today. Conceivably, Matta will take two big men in the class if he can get them since he has only one on the roster for 2011, Jared Sullinger, and his return may hinge on how good of a season he has as a freshman.
Those Ohio State has an interest in who are still uncommitted are 6-8 Mikael Hopkins of Hyattsville, Md., who visited campus for the football game against Miami; 6-9 Amir Williams of Detroit, 6-9 Desmond Hubert of New Egypt, N.J., and 6-9 Greg Lewis of Baltimore.
What?s next: Matta will put most of his efforts right now into landing at least one big man for this class. That is a must. And with the recent departure from the program by reserve center Zisis Sarikopoulos and possibility of another player leaving the program after the 2010-11 season, the coaches are likely to try to lure in two quality post players, if possible.
The top candidates at this point are 6-10 Amir Williams of Birmingham (Mich.) Detroit Country Day and 6-8 Mikeal Hopkins of Hyattsville (Md.) DeMatha, who also were at the Miami game. Matta recently followed up with in-home visits to each of those players and could be close to roping in commitment No. 4 in the class.
Along with Ohio State, Williams is giving the most consideration to Florida, DePaul, Oklahoma and Arizona. Hopkins is taking an official visit to Kansas this weekend and reportedly has a leader in his mind.
Thompson and Scott plan to sign letters-of-intent with Ohio State in November. Ross could as well, although he needs to continue to handle his academics at Burlington.

"There is a consensus that the summer has some value. But the summer also has some negatives," he said. "I think everybody wants to see the issue reviewed."
The NCAA board of directors agreed during a meeting in Indianapolis today, voting to study the proposal for at least a year before deciding the fate of the summer recruiting period.
Perea's Indiana Elite coach. "I also think he wanted to give his commit and see if he could get some of the other top players in his class to commit, too.''
That would include Park Tudor's Yogi Ferrell and Hamilton Southeastern's Gary Harris, two of Perea's good friends in the Class of 2012. Ferrell is ranked No. 17 in the nation and Harris is No. 24. Shortly after he committed to IU, Perea called Harris. Perea told Ferrell over the weekend that he thought he would commit to IU, he just didn't say when.
Meanwhile, 6-2 point guard Shannon Scott of Alpharetta, Ga., 6-7 wing Sam Thompson of Chicago and 6-9 forward Trey McDonald of Battle Creek, Mich., are likely to sign their letters today, the first day of the weeklong signing period.
Scott and Thompson, as well as Ross, are ranked among the top 60 players nationally by a consensus of recruiting services
