OSU Men's Basketball Recruiting/Projections/General Discussions

According to Quintin Ross' Coach, we'll know very shortly whether Quintin will sign. Apparantly he is still considering Mississippi state due to proximity to home, and the fact that 2 AAU teammates will be signing there today.

@DaveTelep: LaQuinton Ross AAU coach says we'll know in hour if he's signing. He will visit #OhioState this weekend.

8:28: Last year this blog famously posted odds on the Harrison Barnes announcement and people bit on it. So how about some odds on this years top uncommitted prospect? Cody Zeller: 5-2 Indiana , 3-1 North Carolina, Butler 10-1. Lines subject to change!

9:28: Huber Heights (OH) Wayne High School Head Coach Travis Trice Sr. checks in to let Scout.com know that Travis Trice Jr. (Michigan State) and Markus Crider (Providence) have both faxed in their letters. (BS)

Rivals has a nice free article rating the Big Ten's 2011 recruiting classes. They rank OSU #1 in the Big Ten (10th nationally) and Illinois second (11th). MSU (16) and Indiana (27) were also ranked nationally.

Best by category
Best perimeter scorer: Tracy Abrams
Best low post scorer: Cody Zeller
Best passer: Tracy Abrams
Best shooter: Travis Trice
Best rebounder: Branden Dawson
Best shot blocker: Amir Williams
Best defender: Dwaun Anderson
Most versatile: Sam Thompson
Best in the clutch: Cody Zeller
Best pro prospect: Branden Dawson
Best speed: Shannon Scott
Best motor: Joe Coleman
Impact player: Cody Zeller
Biggest sleeper: Jarrod Uthoff

Best at each position (top overall player in bold)
PG Tracy Abrams, Illinois
SG Mycheal Henry, Illinois
SF Sam Thompson, Ohio State
PF Branden Dawson, Michigan State
C Cody Zeller, Indiana

Inside the Numbers
3 - Teams ranked in the top 30 nationally
28 - Rivals150 prospects coming to the Big Ten
2 - Five-star prospects coming to the Big Ten
10 - Four-star prospects coming to the Big Ten
6 - Three-star ranked prospects coming to the Big Ten
9 - States represented by Rivals150 Big Ten recruits

Thanks to the addition of four-star big man Amir Williams just as the signing period was coming to a close, Ohio State - which had already signed four-stars Sam Thompson, LaQuinton Ross and Shannon Scott, and three-star Trey McDonald - was able to creep into the top 10 classes nationally. The Buckeyes beat out Bruce Weber and Illinois, which inked a foursome of in-state four-stars in Mycheal Henry, Tracy Abrams, Mike Shaw and Nnanna Egwu. Led by five-star Branden Dawson and four-star Dwaun Anderson, Michigan State ranked 16th nationally.
Tom Crean and Indiana checked in at No. 27. The Hoosiers were the only conference school outside of Michigan State to ink a five-star by signing Cody Zeller. Michigan and Minnesota each landed two Rivals150 players while Purdue, Iowa and Wisconsin were able to land one member of the Rivals150.

Best recruiting battle

The race for Branden Dawson was easily the most hard-fought recruiting battle within the conference. For the longest time it looked as if Purdue would emerge as the victor thanks to proximity and an early start in recruiting him. Marquette came in from the Big East to muddy things up a bit before Tom Izzo and Michigan State sold Dawson on their tradition.

While it wasn't an inter-conference recruiting battle, the single most important recruiting victory was scored by Indiana when they secured Cody Zeller over a stiff challenge from North Carolina and Butler.

Where's the beef?

Outside of Zeller, who should arrive at Indiana as a polished low-post scorer, there doesn't appear to be many college-ready big men headed to the Big Ten. Illinois signee Mike Shaw is probably the next closest to being ready but he fancies himself more of a perimeter guy than a low post scorer. Ohio State's Amir Williams and Illinois' Nnanna Egwu are both shot-blockers who can run the floor, but they each need to add muscle and are still raw on the offensive side

Who is this bball recruit? I'm pretty sure he was walking with Coach Boals (BB).

'Recuiting is like shaving . . . '

That's the first half of a coaching axiom Thad Matta uses.

The other half is, "If you don't do it every day, you look like a bum."

Matta was keeping up appearances today.

While assistant coach Brandon Miller filled in on Matta's weekly radio call-in show, Matta and assistant coach Jeff Boals were at the Flyin' to the Hoop tournament in Kettering, Ohio, to check out 2011 signee Sam Thompson of Chicago (Whitney Young) and a number of high-major prospects in the three classes after that.

The highest-rated talents who were on the court today:

2012
- Gary Harris, 6-4, 195, Indianapolis (Hamilton Southeastern)

- Tony Parker, 6-9, 274, Lithonia, Ga. (Miller Grove) ... former AAU teammate of Ohio State 2011 signee Shannon Scott

2013
- Thomas Hamilton, 6-8, 230, Chicago (Whitney Young)

2014
- Jahlil Okafor, 6-8, 260, Chicago (Whitney Young)

- Paul White, 6-7, 185, Chicago (Whitney Young)

Two more of Ohio State's 2011 signees played in the HoopHall Classic in Springfield, Mass., over the holiday weekend.

Scott scored 22 points to lead Alpharetta., Ga., Milton to a 75-69 win over No.1-ranked Oak Hill Academy of Virginia on Saturday night.

LaQuinton Ross had 26 points in Life Center Academy's win.

The Buckeyes' 2011 class more closely resembles a typical Tom Izzo class, while the 2010 class is more Calipari-like. We can expect the 2011 matriculators to stick around a bit longer, IMO - and that will be a good thing moving forward.

Thad Matta is clearly the best recruiter Ohio State has ever had at the hoop head coach position.

When you consider Coach Matta's hometown, I could see why the Illini would possibly be jealous...

Hoopeston, IL.

Hoopeston, translated from older days, means [strike]a whale's vagina[/strike] Hoops town. At least I would think it does.

Thank you again, Mr. Andy Geiger.

From the Tony Parker thread by Bucksin86 post
Right now we need to clear 1 spot for the 2011 class- sounds like it will be Kecman and maybe even Sullinger and/or Buford.
For 2012, Thomas might jump after 2 years and Ross could be a one and done.

There will be room for 1-3 kids in 2012. It sounds like Thad has prioritized a big guy (Coleman, Parker, Hammons, Gathers seem to be some targets).
I think one of us is confused in our years. I think we are fine for 2012 (not 2011) recruiting class because Matta has already stated that Kecman will graduate this spring and his knees are now well enough to play competitive college basketball anymore so he will be off of an athletic scholarship if you wants to go to graduate school. I get the strange feeling that Sullinger will be back for another year. I just think that he enjoys playing in his hometown too much to leave early. While I would love for Buford to stay another year, that probably all depends upon whether there is a lockout or not. It could be that Smith or Sibert decides that they want more playing time and one of them leaves but I think that will depend upon whether JS or WB leave which would open up a spot.

For 2013, I believe you are right that Thomas will be history and from everything that you post about Ross it just seems like he is getting better and better and probably will be a one and done player as you state.

I might be totally wrong or misinterpreting your years and now that I think about it I probably am. The next recruiting class will be the 2011- 12 class (my 2012 class) and my 2013 class is the 2012-2013 recruiting class.

We lose Diebs/Dallas/Lighty at the end of this season....

2011/12 season we have 14 players on schollie- one will need to leave to get to the 13 schollie limit (Probably Kecman but Sully or Buford could leave early)

SR
Buford
Kecman

JR
Ravenel

Soph
Sullinger
Thomas
Craft
Smith
Sibert
Weatherspoon

FR
Scott
Ross
Thompson
McDonald
Williams

2012/2013 season we have 12 on schollie and no commitments for the frosh class. So we have 1 schollie available for this year and potential for 1 to 3 more with Sully/Thomas/Ross leaving early. We could also get a transfer (Weatherspoon?). Thad seems to have prioritized a "big" for this freshman class (Coleman/Parker have to be very high on the list).

Looks like this will likely be the team going into next year...

Seniors
W.Buford

Juniors
E.Ravenel

Sophomores
J.Sullinger
D.Thomas
J.Sibert
L.Smith Jr.
A.Craft
J.Weatherspoon

Freshmen
A.Williams
S.Scott
S.Thompson
L.Ross
T.McDonald

-------------
Starters (most likely):
1 A.Craft
2 W.Buford
3 S.Thompson/L.Ross
4 D.Thomas
5 J.Sullinger

Bench Players that ought to see some minutes:
J.Sibert
S.Scott
A.Williams
S.Thompson/L.Ross
L.Smith Jr.

Ought to be some good discussion upcoming about our team next year. Really interested to see how these freshmen play themselves into the lineup, especially that battle for starting SF. Or does Amir Williams show he's starter material, takes over PF, and moves Thomas to SF? Players that are good on D will play the soonest, and that's probably Amir's biggest strength.

No matter how you slice it, this is the favorite in the Big Ten and likely a top 5 team preseason next year.
