Instant impact in the Big Ten......nice article on the incoming talent for next year.

It is only going to get better in the future, with Tubby at Minnesota, I think Michigan will be back at some point...Webber will continue to pull in recruits, So will Sampson and Izzo...

I think that it is going to be tOSU, MSU, Indiana fighting year in and year out, and guys like Wisky, Illinois, Minny, Michigan, fighting to get into that group for a year or two in a row...

I still have to chuckle at the thought of that entire situation...even when those 2nd tiers get there, they ain't keepin up with us.....:oh:

Babbitt's departure and what does it mean

It is my firm belief that either Madsen or Wallace could fill the PF position in Matta's system it in 08 with the departure of Babbitt. I think it is going to get more and more difficult for TM to pull the boys out of Indiana just due to the home folk pressure that those guys feel.

It would be nice if KK would stay around for two years which I do not think is out of the realm of possibility.

I don't know who else Matta, except for Gates, was in on for the 08 class to play the PF position. Perhaps he might look at a JUCO, like Hunter, to fill in for 08-09.

Dispatch

Thomas and his high school team are expected at Ohio State on Friday and Saturday for the men's basketball program's annual team camp. Also expected to participate are OSU commitments B.J. Mullens of Canal Winchester, Walter Offutt of Indianapolis and Anthony "Noopy" Crater of Flint, Mich.

More in article regarding Babbitt's departure

With respect, LitlBuck, given that Gene Smith is a former member of the Infractions Committee of the NCAA I think Ohio State has a very good idea about what our scholarship status is. The AD may not want to publicize it (a decision I endorse), but he has a very good idea nonetheless.

In 2008 we will have Madsen + Lighty = 2 still on scholarship
five scholarships given in 2007 = 7 players now on scholarship
In 2008 we can give five scholarships even if our scholarships are reduced by one.

Gene Smith used to be on the Infractions Committee. He probably still has some contacts but all of the rules regarding players leaving early has not really been sorted out yet to the best of my knowledge. From everything that I have read, it is going to be on a case to case basis so I doubt if any decision has been made with regard to Oden's situation.

Spacing in classes

You like to have some upperclassmen. Currently Thad has had to recruit large classes. My guess is he wants to get to the point Tressel is where you don't have to get 25 man classes every year ie 5 man classes every year in basketball.

Do I think Matta initiated. Hell no. I think Babbitt chose to stay home good for him. He will likely never be heard from again except maybe a sweet 16 run where Offutt, Mullens, Crater and such will be playing for final four bids.

Good luck to the kid.

Ok...this question has been asked more times than i can remember...but i still am not totally clear on it...with Oden, Conley, and Cook all turning pro I know it partially hurts us...something like 1/2 and for 2/2 they need to have poor grades as well...but if they were all to come back during the summers and graduate could that help us later on down the road???

i know that this is a basic question but if anyone knows the answer it would be really helpful...

It is my understanding that if you leave school early and are in good academic standing that is a 2/1 and it does not hurt the APR. I think the thing that hurts the APR is when a guy leaves early and is not in good academic standing and Greg might fall into that category.

If Aaron Pogue qualifies academically this year, he would be eligible to transfer from JuCo after his first year there? Would he be someone with success at the Junior College level that would get the staffs attention?

Are you sure those are actual rankings, or is it just a list of players? I knew Offutt was highly regarded in the state, but number one overall surprised me.

Regardless, nice to see Walter getting the credit and notoriety he deserves.

Talk about an early decision!

We've been reading and writing a lot recently about how accelerated recruiting has become, but this is really something. USC coach Tim Floyd has offered a scholarship to an eighth-grader for the second year in a row.

8th grade recruits, part two

If you enjoyed Jen's post below, you'll like this one too (maybe). I asked Ohio State's super-recruiter John Groce the other day how young was the youngest player to which they'd ever offered a scholarship. He kind of chuckled, paused, and told me they offered a kid between his seventh and eighth-grade year.

I said, "how can you offer a kid that young?" He said, "Is that a rhetorical question?"
