OSU Men's Basketball Recruiting/Projections/General Discussions

I would not be opposed to them adding a profilic scorer like Roderick if there is room.

At the same time I don't want to lose Ahrens as I've been screaming for him to get more PT for weeks.

Unless I'm a moron, which is a definite possibility, I count 12 guys on scholarship right now (allowed 13) with three graduating (Lane, Woods, Jackson) and three incoming (Carton, Liddell, Gaffney).

So apparently we still have one schollie to give for '19? Again, I would not be opposed to them offering Roderick...at all.

yes, i certainly think we're done for the 2019 class. i'd be shocked and even disappointed if we pursue/sign another conventional recruit unless there are multiple transfers. the only thing that possibly makes even the slightest shred of sense would be a redshirted ben roderick.

1. the roster for the 2019 season is positively stacked at no less than 11 players vying for major time. even if we lose to transfer either ahrens, ledee, or jallow, there is no need to try to upgrade what already projects to be the deepest team we've had in ages. as i've stated many times before, adding a player to that team will probably just create issues in the locker room. team chemistry is going to be a -- perhaps the -- priority for ho1tmann & co. next year.

2. barring unforeseeable attrition, adding a conventional recruit to the 2019 class means the 2020 class will consist of only one player. a 4-player class for 2018, a 4-player class for 2019, and a 1-player class for 2020 create an imbalance.

Got some smart cats on this board.

Maybe they already know one of this years freshmen won't be back next season... Ahrens minutes trending up, Duane Washington down?

washington has had the flu. i woudnt read into his minutes at all...honestly if anyone were to leave i would guess it was jallow but thats strictly opinion

Offer Ben Roderick.

We have the spot and we might have the need, depending on the development (or lack thereof) next season of our returning wings and if those guys even stick around. We do need to add a proficient scoring wing, clearly, that is what's missing from the 2019 class.

We aren't looking good for elite 2020 wings at the moment (Che Evans, ranked 102nd, might be our best chance and I haven't heard much on that front lately). Take the Central Ohio boy who can fill it up, give him a year in the system, maybe RS him, but see what he can bring to the table. He might not be a high-major athlete for defensive and rebounding purposes and he probably won't even be the best shooter or the best slasher on our team, but he very well could end up the best all-around scorer at some point.

He's got three levels to his game. He has confidence and aggression on offense, something we are sorely lacking. And he's good enough to back his swagger up.

Do it.

two types of players i think we need for 2020: 1) a ballhandler/distributor and 2) a post player. while roderick is a 2019 player, he'd necessarily determine 2020 numbers if he were to be a buckeye. is roderick a post player? obviously not. is roderick a ballhandler/distributor? i don't think so. he's certainly no more of that kind of player than morton is. not even close. this is not at all shot at roderick, but he looks to me like a typical small forward in terms of his range of skills.

now obviously the staff is interested. ho1tmann has made the very short trip to liberty to watch ben play. more meaningful was last night's game visit. it's hardly uncommon for local players to be osu's guests; however, there does appear to be a pattern here.

if roderick is offered a spot, i still think a redshirt makes the most sense. the competition for minutes at the small forward position for 2019 will mostly be between andre, jallow, ahrens, and liddell. there just won't be much left over for a true freshman unless he's a two-way dynamo like liddell.

also, if roderick is offered a spot, what it would tell me more than anything else is that the staff likes the idea of forming washington into a combo guard who can fill as the lead guard with competency. i would not at all be surprised if this is already the staff's thinking regardless of what happens with roderick, morton, or whomever else. i see a lot of point guard potential in washington. he reminds me so much of jamar butler.

I don't know anything about Roderick but his 24/7 shows no offers from any school. Is that true ? and if so it's alarming

Edit: Rivals shows him with some MAC offers and Jeff Boals' Stoney Brook

https://n.rivals.com/content/prospects/2019/ben-roderick-210935

Also has some interest from Wisconsin and Xavier, who I imagine are in "closely watching" mode right now just like OSU.

He missed last season with an ACL injury, don't know if he played AAU and if he did it was with whoever the Columbus Bears are, so the evaluation on him is late for a lot of teams.

He's putting up big numbers again decent HS competition. He doesn't have ideal height/length/athleticism for a college SF, so I'm not going to say that he should definitely have high-major offers already or that the recruitniks haven't really looked at him yet, but I do think there is "more to the story" with Ben.

Actually, watching more video, and Roderick's length looks pretty good. I'd say a 6'8 wingspan, at least. Average athleticism seems to be the only big thing sticking out that is limiting his prospects. He looks fairly skilled and savvy, good floor game.

I say it again, offer him.

It doesn't have to be now. If they want to see more games to evaluate him, fair enough.

But if Wiscy or Xavier come through with an offer first, it could hurt our chances.

OSU needs to be on top of this one so that they're in the position they need to be to get him if they decide they want him.

I've got a feeling about this kid. Probably far from an instant-impact guy, but once he adjusts to the college game he can have real value, possibly even a scoring leader at some point in his career.

Easy for you to say. I guess the only problem I see if you give Roderick a scholarship is that you are now down to just one scholarship available for 2020 and I think that you definitely need to get someone in here for a season before K Wesson graduates. In addition to filling that position, you might want to look at a pure PG unless you want Carton, Washington, or Muhammed backing up Woods which I guess might work.

I think the only way that I would take him is if he would agree to redshirt. He definitely needs to build up his frame. I also agree that I would like to see a little more tape of him before I jump on the bandwagon.
