OSU Men's Basketball Recruiting/Projections/General Discussions

3/4s guarding 5s is what worries me. The ACC in particular is a league that typically the top teams have bigger frontcourts. You cant assume you will never go up against a super big team, especially when you get to March. If you play a team like FSU has been in the past that rotates legit 7-footers, you are going to stop them with one 6'9" guy and a rotation of hybrid wings? I dont know that it makes sense. Are we now counting Alonzo and EJ each as half post players? I dont quite get the plan here. Losing Potter begs the question of whether a post will be added to replace him.
I think you remember Andre Wesson "shutting down" Haas and I believe he was at least 6'11" or maybe he might have been a legit 7-footer. Size does not always matter if you know how to play defense.

Edit: Potter was not going to "shut down" any legit 7 foot guys--that is just silly.

Andre Wesson didnt guard Haas most of the game. They didnt try that until the second half when the other bigs were all in foul trouble already. Not a good comparison really for your argument since Potter did get a chance and had some minutes before they went to Andre. I feel like it is too much of a slippery slope. This debate is pointless anyway- CH I'm sure knows his roster has a hole and will no doubt be looking to fill it before next season.

I didnt say Potter was a stopper, but at least he is a strong 6'9" and had 5 fouls to give. How many teams do you see guarding 7-footers with 6'6" wings for half of the game?

interesting comment about recruiting from ho1tmann in samford's post-game presser. jardy asked him to make a few comments about the 2019 class. coach didn't go into any specifics about the players; however, with a smirk on his face, he said they faced some "nasty recruiting battles." he emphasized "nasty" in such a way that it sounded like he meant "corrupt" and not just "unpleasant."

going to take a not-so-wild guess that the nastiest battle was over liddell. if both missouri and illinois are battling over an illinois player, it's gotta be ugly. i'd hardly be surprised if liddell at least partly chose osu because everything was so clean in comparison.

Well secretly a lot of college coaches hate each other. Nobody is making friends with rivals in recruiting. It is the high major coaches who claim recruiting is generally clean and on the up and up that you have to be suspicious about.

For the first time in his coaching career, Chris Holtmann inked a top-10 recruiting class.

After five-star point guard D.J. Carton, four-star forward Alonzo Gaffney and four-star forward E.J. Liddell signed their National Letters of Intent in the past week, Ohio State announced the 2019 signings Tuesday morning. Carton, Gaffney and Liddell make up the eighth-ranked class in the nation and the top class in the Big Ten.

“Our staff did a tremendous job working tirelessly to recruit these young men and our current players were terrific as well in welcoming them to our basketball family," Holtmann said in a statement. "D.J., E.J. and Alonzo will join our current players in representing The Ohio State University at a high level. All three are gifted players, highly competitive and they value winning and want to be a part of continuing to build a winning program. They have been very well coached and that will no doubt serve them well as they transition."

From this recruiting article on LGHL comes the following regarding who the writer thinks Ohio State might land in the class of 2020. Some of the names have individual threads so those that are interested can look up the individual recruits.
Behind him, Jaemyn Brakefield and Ben Carlson both have Buckeye interest, but seem likely to go to Kentucky in Brakefield’s case, or head to the west coast in Carlson’s. Again, a great season would certainly be a big sell for them, and as big men go, I think if Ohio State lands one in 2020, it’ll be one of the three mentioned here. My guess right now is Loveday.

The forward spot has a bit clearer of a hierarchy. Ohio State’s top forward target is Cam’ron Fletcher, and if they can pluck him out of Missouri they’d be more than satisfied with that. However, if he stays home as I expect, Ethan Morton and Che Evans are probably the best bets to take the spot, and the preference between the two probably just comes down to which one wants in first. I think Ohio State either ends up with Fletcher or Evans.

Back to guard, there are quite a few options. The dream for Ohio State is to pair five-star Georgia shooting guard Brandon Boston Jr. with Penn, but he’s a pretty heavy Duke lean right now. Behind him, Nimari Burnett, Noah Farrakhan and Jamal Mashburn Jr. have legitimate interest in Ohio State. I’ll go out on a limb here and say that Holtmann flexes his muscles a bit and beats Duke out for Boston.

That gives Ohio State a class with four-star Dominiq Penn, five-star Brandon Boston, four-star Che Evans/Cam’ron Fletcher and four-star Zach Loveday. Obviously it’s not a sure thing that Ohio State lands any of those guys —save for Penn— but with the way Holtmann is building the program, I think a massive class like that is more possible than people think.

I am not sure how much stock to put in this article because the writer talked like Ohio State has 3-4 scholarships for 2020.

How many spots are expected to be open for the 2020 class? Maybe 3, and that is if AG is a 1 & done. Penn, Loveday, and ???
there are only two scholarships available for 2020. unless there is attrition, i can't see ho1mann taking a commitment from a third recruit prior to spring 2019 -- that is, when gaffney or someone would announce an early departure. so, for this 2-player class, a big like loveday is a given. others may disagree, but i think the second player is either a small forward or a tallish combo guard. if the second player is a small forward, then i think ho1tmann takes a commitment from a true point guard rather late in the recruiting window (i.e., after a player's announcement to depart early) or after there is attrition (e.g., another potter). if the second player is a tall guard (like morton), though, then i think the class either stands pat at two or ho1tmann nabs a 6'6"+ forward after a third scholarship opens up.

all of that being stated, if penn proves to be a must-take type of talent who wants to be a buckeye, then i don't think you can pass on him. we'll see if he's that kind of player next aau season when dom plays with the big dogs. his play last aau season didn't exactly blow anyone's hair back. i'll be surprised if penn commits to osu prior to next summer.

At this point, I'd be surprised if anyone in the '19 class is one and done. Its a good class, but understand that we are a very balanced team this year and the frosh forwards are going to be looking for PT over a soph and junior that currently start. I think Carton, with the PG spot being wide open, would have the best chance to showcase his skills to be the most likely choice for a 1 and done.

The team is loaded up with combo forward types. When the 2020 class are frosh, we will have Young, Liddell, Gaffney and Ledee who can all play the 4 (probably all best suited for that spot). Walker and possibly Carton will be gone after 2020 as will Kaleb, so I think the 2 biggest needs for the 2020 class are PG and C. I see the point about a big/athletic guard that can shoot since we have Washington and Muhammad as combo guys who are 6'3", but I don't think either of those two guys are best playing most of their minutes at the PG spot. A 2020 PG probably wouldn't get a ton of PT with Carton and CJ, but he'd be more ready to go in 2021. Now, I don't think you take any old PG in 2020 and it might be difficult to convince a top PG to commit with little PT available, so I think you do have to be flexible. If you feel really good about a top 50sh 2021 PG, then we could probably play it out that way.

Mitchell has played for Montverde the past 2 seasons so his state ranking is probably for the state of florida. corbin is a good hs player, maybe low level dI.

Whiteside is a kid to keep an eye on, but sean jones is probably the best frosh in the area.
