OSU Men's Basketball Recruiting/Projections/General Discussions

now onto 2020...

my guess is that the staff is now prioritizing primarily three players: jackson, morton, and loveday.

i think jackson will announce very shortly. perhaps even next week. he goes to ttun for an official this weekend, and i think that seals the deal for him. i'd love to have him because he would fit absolutely perfectly, but i think zeb chooses beilein and i also think that program is the clear favorite for a number of reasons.

morton has two more officials before the end of his junior year. he's already been to purdue and indiana for officials and will be in stanford at the end of this month. he probably wants a ttun official, but that may not happen (see above). my guess is we secure one of his remaining two. possibly butler for the final. regardless, the staff definitely wants a point/combo, and morton ticks many of the boxes that would cause this staff to wait him out.

loveday is loveday. i think both parties are comfortable with where they're at and are not pushing things.

with liddell now in the 2019 class and with the 2020 class projecting to be only 2-deep, i'm interested in seeing how much the staff continues to pursue small forwards. if 2020 were instead 3-deep, then i think we'd be going after (1) a point/combo, (2) a small forward, and (3) a post player. again, with liddell now on board, i have a hard time seeing the staff moving on a guy who is not a primary or secondary ballhandler.

finally, i have no idea what to think about penn. i still think he's going to turn out to be a fine basketball player, but the development appears to be lagging behind the expected pace. the lack of offers tells a story. with a bit more of his father's urgency, i think he'd already be on board. maybe he's a bit of a late bloomer between the feet and in the heart.

I stated in Jackson's thread that I thought he would end up at ttun because it seems like bball guys from Toledo just love that cesspool. I have no idea why. Maybe he loves to shoot 3-pointers. I would think that Ohio State would be a better fit for him but if he wants to go to that place up north so be it. There will be others.

I thought for some reason some of the bigger bluebloods were in on Morton. He certainly would be a nice addition if we could land him but if we do not I would think that there are other guys around the country that CH is looking at.

I thought I read that Kentucky visited Loveday which sort of concerns me a little because we really need a big man with Wesson only having 2 more.

He is a mystery to me also and on 270hoops he no longer is ranked as the top player in this area and his offer list is less than stellar.

I think we will lose out on Zeb, but we are fortunately in a position where that is okay. I am not really sure there is a scholarship for Penn which must be awkward in the coaching meetings. I could imagine Penn coming as a walk-on but I am not sure Sconnie makes enough to bankroll that over sending Penn to a smaller school on a full ride.

EDIT: UM is really benefiting from having open spots at the guard positions similar to us in the recruitment of Carton

there are two other reasons that i expect jackson to commit to ttun. won't go into it now and it's nothing seedy, but the pull is real. i think osu has gained ground recently, yet i don't see it as (nearly) enough.

yeah, if we don't get either jackson or morton -- and i'm not expecting that we will -- then i won't at all be concerned. not only is it early with plenty of options out there, but i do think there is enough flexibility that we don't have to get a point/combo. in my opinion, the ideal class is a point/combo and a post player, but a 2020 class consisting of a ballhandling 3 and a post player would work. carton, walker, and washington should suffice for 2020, especially when you can sign a really good point (like meechie) for 2021.

between kentucky, louisville, purdue, and i'm sure the bunches of other programs that will jump in, the competition for loveday will certainly be fierce. i'm not assuming that we'll get him, but i do think we have the leg up on everyone else. and i do agree that we really need a post player in that 2020 class.

re: Jalen Johnson offer

The staff has laid the foundation with the three classes leading up to this one. The table has been set.

Even with some expected amount of attrition, our roster should be in a very good spot going into 2020-2021. Any player in the 2020 recruiting cycle will be well aware of that.

We now have some excellent talent and great player-recruiters (like Carton, for one) to help entice other top talent to get on board.

The staff are going to shoot for the stars in this class. They are going to take some huge swings because they know it's not going to crush the program if they miss... and if they hit, well, it could mean big, big things for that 2020-2021 season. But I honestly think the staff have the momentum and they have the situation to sell that--if some dominoes fall their way--they can get a T20 play-maker on the wing like BJ Boston or Jalen Johnson (don't think both will go to Duke) to go with a top center like Loveday. Yes, many other blue-bloods are going to be involved with some of these top targets you're going to see OSU going after, but who knows, maybe we will get one. We may only need one.

I've seen some intimate that part of scUM's advantage over OSU was the idea that Zeb wants to play PG (though the fact that Zeb plays for Zavier Simpson's dad in AAU and is close with that family probably had more sway), but I will be pretty surprised if Zeb plays much PG at scUM. Maybe once David DeJulius graduates? Kind of think that scUM will have more ideal PG options lined up at that point, though.

Also seen some speculation, including from Adam Jardy, that OSU might not even take a guard in this class now that they've missed on Zeb. I'd be pretty surprised if that were the case, though. Even assuming no attrition from our backcourt, Walker will be a senior, Luther and Duane juniors (and not really PGs at all), and DJ could be two-and-done. If not Dom Penn, I really do think the staff will still try to get some sort of PG or CG in this class. There's talk about Morton but I don't think we're gonna be the winner of that recruitment. I think it's either gonna be Dom Penn or a guard we haven't offered yet.

Che Evans is visiting this weekend. It's too early to tell, really, but given that we recently offered when Schrage visited and then he immediately set up an unofficial, I think we could end up a player in that recruitment. His current ranking won't blow anyone away but I think an athletic 6'6ish scoring wing would be a very nice fit for need in the class. Though a center is definitely the biggest priority.
