OSU Men's Basketball Recruiting/Projections/General Discussions

Do I smell someone's football recruiting pessimism spilling over to the basketball forum? Hey, JT may not be able to close OOS kids, but Thad can close 'em every day of the week and twice on Sundays.
Thad can't close at the 4 :p

it's not mine. I do not compare JT with TM when it comes to recruiting or should I say it the other way around. However, I do think TM is going to find recruiting Indiana a little bit harder because of Painter and that no good over at Indiana.

It was a joke...I agree we are in for a battle with Van Tresse...Sampson will not let him go without a fight, as we know. I'm glad Walter has turned down Sampson's advances up until this point...same with Crater.

I think if we get Van in 2009, which I doubt and I know I am in the minority on that, I think we could be looking at another pg in 2010. I do think we will go after another 3/4 player in 2009
Even if we do not get Van.
It will be someone else.
We will not need another 5 in 2010 because we will still have DL along with Mullens.

Well we could go for some wings and a combo guard...

Thomas looks like he could be another once in a lifetime type player, has drawn comparisons to LBJ and MJ. These are obviously a lil premature comparisons, but either way he is going to be a good one...

As for optimism, Thad has closed at an over 80% rate on anyone that we have a had a chance at and he went hard after...except for the 4, but we are casting a nice range with Roe, Gates, and Babbit and don't you know that the guy most feel we have the best shot at is from clear across the US and not one of the instate guys...Go figure...

As for JT I have that same feeling with him in state, but OOS I get a little worried sometimes...

Guys we are going places...

All you have to do is look at where this team is now 5th in the country and only continuing to get better.

Yeah we will lose Harris and Lewis for sure, and there is a great chance that we will be losing Cook and Oden as well.

The thing is just from reading the threads stickied at the top of the recruiting page you see that while they are not quite a once in a 20 year span players like Oden, but what they are all guys that 3 years ago we didnt even dream aboout talking about here, and we arent just bringing in 1 or maybe 2 we are bringing in 5 guys next year that are top 100 players and the same goes for the year after that after we sign a PF.

Just step back and watch as we see probably the second best period of basketball at Ohio State but most of werent around in the early 60's so just sit back and enjoy...

I am not sure how much work it would be and I know that all of the players have their own threads but can someone who knows their bball recruiting give me a brief breakdown on the potential last player for the '08 class...I know for the time being at least that it is between Babbitt, Roe, and a few others but what do each bring to the table, what are we looking for, and who do you guys like the best...

thanks in advance

While I share your enthusiasm for the program I think he it is essential for some of the big guys (Oden, Koufos) stay more than one year if we are going to the really big time. I think we can withstand the loss of wing players leaving early but we really need the big guys to give us more than a year when they do come. Guys like Cook can be replaced but the big guys are essential for the long-term good of the program.

Also, the Gary Williams years weren't too bad:)

Well at this point I would say that Lauderdale is going to be a 4 year player and Mullens at least 2 if not more. KK could be one and done, but we will see once he steps foot on the college court if he is strong enough to handle some of physical play.

I agree we need some big men to continue the success, but next year we will have Hunter, Twig, Madsen, KK, and Lauderdale even if Oden leaves. The year after that we will have Madsen, KK(hopefully), Lauderdale, Mullens, and Babbit(hopefully) or whoever we get at the 4 in the 08' class. There is quite enough bodies and quite a bit of size, just not the guys in Oden's league on the defensive end of the court.

I agree the size will be there but hopefully we will not have to wait until the 2009-10 season to make a deep deep run. Without experience, the big guys aren't really going to help. I really don't think DL, KK (strength) will help us next year when it comes to rebounding and defending but you have seen more of these guys than I have.
40, I think we agree on everything but I just think we need the experience big guys.

The thing is we will have Hunter, Twig, Madsen, and KK to provide scoring from the bigs next year. I also think we could go with a four guard lineup with a guy like Wallace at the 4.

The scoring is going to come from the guards with Butler, Conley, Diebler, Turner, Lighty and Cook if he stays. Butler could be looked upon to score 20/game which he is more than capable if he takes the number of shots that he needs to get there. If Cook stays he will be a scorer for us as well.

With Conley at the point and Butler at the 2g these guys are going to be able to get open shots. Like Diebler with his great shot could go off on any given night just by Conley getting him open looks. Also Hunter will become more of a force down low.

We will also be a tough defensive team if Hunter gets stronger and with Lighty, Butler, Conley as the 3 guards. Just need someone to play the 4 defensively and he could go with with a lineup of Twig/Hunter or Hunter/KK.

Also Lauderdale while he won't provide a ton of points he will be a force defensively as his body is already college ready.

Either way we have tons of options next year and returning 6 players you have to like our experience to go with the young guys coming in...
