OSU Men's Basketball Recruiting/Projections/General Discussions

CHRIS HOLTMANN SAYS HE NEARLY TURNED TO A SUMMER REC LEAGUE TO FILL HIS DEPLETED ROSTER

When Chris Holtmann arrived at Ohio State in June, the roster situation was bleak.

The Buckeyes had just seven scholarship players and in the middle of the summer, it was really too late for Holtmann to address that issue with recruiting as most players were locked up.

The situation was so dire, the staff nearly turned to players from a summer rec league to add depth to the bench.

"When you're sitting in June, at one point, with seven healthy players, it's like 'whew.' I was about to ask you to come out here and play," Holtmann said to the media. "Honestly, at one point we thought about going to the rec league in the summer because of concerns about that."

Thankfully for Holtmann and the Buckeyes, it never had to come to that. Musa Jallow committed to Ohio State and reclassified to the 2017 class, Kyle Young switched his commitment from Butler and Andrew Dakich took advantage of the graduate transfer rule and came to Columbus from Michigan.

"You get Andrew (Dakich), you get Musa (Jallow) and Kyle (Young) and you feel a little bit better," Holtmann said.

Ohio State basketball: What Chris Holtmann said about being ranked, recruiting on his radio show

Speaking of that 2018 class, Holtmann seems very open to the idea of adding another player, especially if Bates-Diop turns pro after this season. That's becoming more and more likely every time he scores 20 points.

If Ohio State does lose Bates-Diop, expect the Buckeyes to go after a graduate transfer. The Buckeyes currently have four high school prospects committed and signed. Holtmann would like to keep that number of high school players at four.

"We would probably bring in an older, experienced player. Maybe another graduate transfer" Holtmann said. "We're not sure what position just yet (that probably depends on what KBD does), but that could be an avenue. We could also look at a sit-one (year) transfer ... We could potentially bring in another freshman. Four is a good number and five is a lot. We wouldn't add more than five. Four (freshmen) is a good number if we can add another guy or two."

No bonafides on this, but my mind immediately jumped to Holtmann looking back at his Butler roster.

Tyler Wideman is a 6-8 power forward that does a lot of tough work down low. 10pts 5 rebounds this season on 70% shooting. Could be a potential name if he doesn't have pro prospects and maybe wants to expand his game for 1 more season.

Kelan Martin is a quick guard if he wants a ball-handler.

Hard to project grad transfers at this point.

Well, it's kind of funny to think now, but Holtmann pulled some rabbits out of a hat when he came in and got Kyle Young, Musa, and Dakich to join the Buckeyes' roster at the last minute. None of them were expected to be game-changers, but nice late additions to be sure. Which of the three has made the most difference? Who would have thought Dakich was the answer! Impressive poise and contributions from the baby-faced killer.

17 minutes a game, including 27 (!) against Maryland and 24 versus Rutgers.

Huh? Those guys are true seniors this year.

Ho1tmann did not rule out a transfer player (sit one year)in his radio interview. I think he just thinks that 5 freshmen might be a little bit too much to handle..
I doubt he will add 5 freshmen. But I am expecting at least 1 grad transfer, maybe 2. It could be a guard and/or SF. I think a good grad transfer guard is easier to find. If the right SF comes along via grad transfer, that would be perfect. I'm thinking that SF is where he may add a sit out transfer if the grad transfer doesn't materialize.

The more I think about next year, I am convinced that Chris should add the best G/SF he can from the grad transfer ranks and that would set them up pretty well for 2019. They are losing a lot with JT and Keita being gone, but CJ and Kaleb are two guys they should be able to rely heavily on and build off of. They do need another scorer to add to the starting group which will presumably have CJ, Kaleb & Luther, and probably Jae LeDee. Either a scoring PG or SF would be a good fit to round the starting group out. I would not be surprised either way, G or SF, but it will be interesting to see how things shake out a few months from now.

Be nice to get that 1st 2019 verbal to sorta lead the way

Any projections for '19 class? I'm fairly new to hoops recruiting.
There are guys on this board that are a little more knowledgeable than myself when it comes to the bball recruiting. I would think that the one guy that we might land for 2019 is Alonzo Gaffney out of Garfield Heights. There is a thread on him. Other than him without any premium access, I am really not sure. Things are little more hush-hush regarding basketball than they are football. Things for 2019 will probably be much clearer come late spring or early summer.

The 2019 class could also depend on if we get a commit or transfer after this season. Ohio State is in pretty desperate need of someone to play the point guard position until Penn comes on board in 2020.
