OSU Men's Basketball Recruiting/Projections/General Discussions

From everything I've heard and read, Potter is a stretch 4 type of player, really liking to get out on the perimeter and shoot the ball. Depending on his defensive prowess and if he could guard an opposing 4, he could be the type of player who Matta can use in order to go with two "big men" on the court at the same time. This would allow the 4 Out 1 In offense to still work with good spacing and what seems to be a current/near future roster made up of many guys who can shoot the ball. Add a Lyle or Harris, who seem to be able to penetrate the lane pretty well and look out...
Well, I also read when Bell committed that he said Matta recruited him to play the 4 position so I guess it is not out of the realm of possibility that they will take 2 "big men" in this upcoming class but I just doubt it.

It will be interesting to see what happens with regards to the recruitment of Potter and Ward with the commitment of Funderburk. I think that Potter and Ward play a different position than Funderburk but with 0 scholarships available, we probably will have one shortly, I would like Matta to go after a versatile wing player or possibly another PG.. I do not know if the commitment of Funderburk came as a surprise to Matta because the offer to Potter was very recent which makes me wonder.

I think it was a first come, first served sort of deal. I'm guessing he and the staff like all three players and were willing to take whoever committed first.

I always respect recruiting opinions but this one sort of baffles me since we have Giddens, Bell, and Thompson already on board. I just do not know what you do with all four of those guys if you are going to include Potter..
Sometimes in football we say "he's the kind of kid you take and find a place for later". Potter is that kind of kid to me. I'm not saying I think the OSU staff will still take him given how tight things are and the fact that Towns, Ward, etc. are still available. But I would love to see that kid in S&G. I don't think he has even scratched the surface yet.

I don't see an issue with it unless Tate plays at the PF position as well. If Tate plays at SF, then you have 5 guys playing the PF/C positions and that leaves 8 guys for the remaining 3 positions. We usually don't have more than 2 PG's, as of now it looks like it will just be Harris and maybe Lyle. That leaves 6 spots at SG/SF, which would be Loving for 1 yr, Williams, Tate, Mitchell, Grandstaff, and KBD.
If someone decides to leave due to lack of pt, etc., then there will be room for a guy like Towns or King. That's all a big "if" since it's not known if Matta would take Potter over one of those wing players if everyone on the upcoming roster stays?

this is purely speculation but it wouldn't surprise me to see a transfer....or 2 but then again I am always wrong

I'm not sure what I would do if I were Matta, as far as who to add if there are 2 spots left. I do think though that there should be 2 more spots in the class, I just don't expect 11 players to all come back for another year. Seriously, when was the last time as many as 11 players were returning on this team? I do think there still may be a need at center, I don't think Derek is a center, he seems built more like a 4 for sure, and of the guys they would have who is the scoring going to come from at the C position? I still think there is a need in that regard. But if it was me, I would shoot for getting 3 guys in the class - Derek and two more, with the candidates being Ward, Potter, King and Simpson. DF I don't see as comparable to Potter in particular, so I don't see his commitment as ending that recruitment really.

DZ, I was not comparing Potter to Funderburk. In fact in my post I said that I knew that they played different positions. My question revolved around if you took Potter what happens with Thompson, Bell, and Giddens. I will admit that Giddens probably is not ready for prime time next year but Thompson will be a "junior" and Bell has had a redshirt year. I do not expect either of them to light up the scoreboard. I just want them for rebounds and defense. I agree that there might only be 11 guys who return because I can see possibly KW, as Brody mentioned, or I do not know who else transferring. From what I have seen, Towns is not an Ohio State lean and neither is Ward. Have no idea where King stands and really have not heard much about him. I do not know if Wade thinks Potter is the type of guy you just bring on board I could live with that. It will be interesting to see what develops.

i have no info on Towns but from the little bit I do know i thought Ward was an OSU lean?

edit: just going off of 247sports it appears ward is leaning sparty and towns is leaning OSU. who the hell knows

this is purely speculation but it wouldn't surprise me to see Kam transfer to help thin out the logjam. but then again I am always wrong
First off, we don't speculate about Buckeyes like that. Secondly, unless Grandstaff or Lyle are as good as D'Angelo when they get onto campus, Kam's got a huge head start in the race to be our starting SG next year, whether or not D'Angelo stays. Third, with Funderburke coming in, the potential future logjam is going to be at C (T.Thompson/Giddens/Bell/Funderburke-if he plays C), not at SG (Lyle is a combo SG/PG and we'll desperately need him at PG to platoon with Harris whenever D'Angelo does announce for the NBA).
