OSU Men's Basketball Recruiting/Projections/General Discussions

I watched Xavier Simpson dominate AJ Harris on both sides of the court last weekend. It will be interesting to see how high he rises in recruiting rankings over the next two seasons.

Yeah, from what I saw of Simpson in the state playoffs, he looked like a guy that I don't want OSU to ignore. Problem is you already have Harris at PG and are targeting higher profile PG recruits now like Lyle and Newman. Could be another great one that OSU doesn't get because they're out chasing the stars.

I like where OSU is at moving forward now with recruiting after the Lyle commit. They are close to capacity scholarship-wise for the 2015-16 season and the next real position of need might be the 4 as Loving will be a Junior next season and it remains to be seen whether anybody else that they have on the roster would be a good fit at that spot (although Mitchell and KBD may have potential to fill it to an extent, MM is not a perimeter threat at this point and KBD may struggle with the physicality of the position). I don't see Lyle as a 1 & done threat so they can have him and AJ at PG, with Kam and Grandstaff as shooters, Tate playing anywhere from 2-4, KBD at the 3/4, and all of those guys are projected to be around at least 3 years starting with the 2015-16 season.

With the addition of Lyle, I would like to see Matta take a hard run at Nick Ward because I think he would be a nice addition to play the 4/5 position. Thompson will only be here for 3 years and I could see Ward in playing the 5 position. I also know that Matta has seem Towns a few times already this season so he must be interested in getting him. While I am concerned about the PG position, it always seems that Matta know something about one of his players that we do not. I certainly do not see Grandstaff or Williams playing the PG so Thad must have another idea in his head.

Jae'Sean Tate as 3rd string PG maybe.

But imagine if JaQuan and Jae'Sean were the starting backcourt (setting aside the fact that we're talking about J's shooting J's). I like that idea if Tate can improve his shooting as I suspect he will, I think they both have a lot of skill although Matta may have to adjust and put the likes of Williams and Harris in there more when playing a quicker team. I'm intrigued with Grandstaff also, I think he has more ball skills than most so he may be able to help ride that to a lot of early PT if his shooting is up to par.

Five-star PF Harry Giles, No. 1 player in Class of 2016, includes Ohio State in top 8: Buckeyes recruiting

Not sure what Matta has on his mind but from the article

Zach Fleer of Land-Grant Holy Land reported Monday that 2015 three-star Ohio forward Khalil Iverson of Delaware Hayes will visit Ohio State on Wednesday.

Zach is a heavy Wisconsin lean according to 247 and I have no idea why he would visit unless Ohio State has expressed some interest or maybe he just wants to see a college game in Columbus.

In your dream scenario, I think we almost have a better shot at King than we do at Spellman because I think he has going to end up at Kentucky: (

I def think we are more likely to get King, but I'm not as high on UK for Spellman as the CB's are. I coached in the system Spellman was in and he loved being back in Ohio after moving to NY for a short while. Now UK isn't too much further than OSU but I think that recruitment is going to go longer than most. It's just a little odd because you haven't heard much buzz around his recruitment.

I read somewhere in the past week, don't remember where, but said that Spellman plays with Calipari's son at the school in MA.

Spellman is big, athletic and skilled. In other words, a unique combination that sets him apart from and ahead of the players that OSU has on their roster in the frontcourt moving forward. I believe that Spellman should be the top priority for Matta in the 2016 class, I just am not sold on the big men he has on the roster at this point and C is the one position that he can't use versatility of the wings to cover.

I guess he just wanted to see some good college basketball because shortly after his visit he made a verbal to Wisconsin.
