Does anyone buy Chip Kelly's story about all of this? Anyone at all?

To allege that they paid $25,000 for information on kids already signed the year prior is a ridiculous excuse, and there's no way the NCAA can buy that. If he doesn't pony up some real info pretty quick, the NCAA is going to conclude that he's lying to them, and he's screwed.

This won't be a Butch Davis "my assistant did it" story, this will be a full-on bullseye focused right at Kelly.

I think we're about to be served a dish of roast duck.

The NCAA will still have to prove it was pay for play. Look at how hard they tried to find out the Auburn Cam Newton fiasco and too date, no smoking gun. The NCAA is a sham. I'm sure emails are being deleted in Eugene as we speak.

They couldn't find any evidence of payment in Newton's case. They've got the $25,000 check from Oregon to Lyles here. With the fact that the written recruiting info was out-of-date, it seems to me that Oregon needs to prove that they got something of value from Lyles other than the commitment of Seastrunk.

So rather than deleting emails, a more effective coverup would be assembling some video of 2011 recruits and saying it came from Lyles.

I don't think their burden is so heavy. I think all they need to prove is that Kelly lied to them - by far the greater wrong in their eyes.

Agree that the NCAA is a sham, though.

Sooo....

Sounds like Chip Kelly might have some "splaining to do:

Yahoo: Will Lyles describes relationship with Chip Kelly

Embattled scouting service owner Will Lyles told Yahoo! Sports that University of Oregon coach Chip Kelly personally approved a controversial $25,000 fee that sparked an ongoing NCAA investigation and was in constant contact as Lyles provided the Ducks with recruiting assistance that may have violated NCAA rules.

In a wide-ranging, multi-day interview, Lyles said Kelly ?scrambled? in late February and asked Lyles to submit retroactive player profiles to justify the $25,000 payment to his company, just days before the transaction was revealed in a March 3 Yahoo! Sports report. Lyles also provided details of his fledgling company ? Complete Scouting Services (CSS) ? as well as the extent of his relationship with numerous Texas high school stars and his role in Ducks? recruitment of certain prospects.

Lyles insists Oregon did not make a direct request or payment to steer recruits to Eugene. However, he now says Oregon did not pay him for his work as a traditional scout, but for his influence with top recruits and their families and his ability to usher prospects through the signing and eligibility process. That dual role as mentor to prospects and paid contractor to Oregon is believed to be a focus of the NCAA probe.
