Bellbrook's Longo will play for Buckeyes

Is Jim Tressel the country's best recruiter?

BELLBROOK ? When Sam Longo hurt his wrist in last year's season opener, he knew right away that it was broken. He was less sure of how it would affect his recruitment.
The offensive lineman from Bellbrook High School did not have to worry for long as he missed just one practice and played the rest of the season with a cast. As soon as his season ended, the offers began rolling in.
Longo, who will be a senior this fall, eventually got the offer he was looking for and recently committed to play football at Ohio State.
"It didn't hurt me," Longo said. "I probably broke it at the right time. My wrist is 100 percent now."
Longo is the 24th player in Ohio State's 2009 recruiting class and the third from the Dayton area, joining Northmont defensive back C.J. Barnett and Coldwater linebacker Adam Homan.
"It's a big deal for me," Longo said. "I cut it down to two schools (Ohio State and Penn State) and kept going back and forth.

Congrats, welcome to the Buckeye family Sam.

Longo has said he's a lifelong buckeye fan, so isn't he already part of the "family"? Or are you a former player/coach and that's the family you're referring to? I hate to be nitpicky, that phrase "wecome to the Buckeye family" just always bugs the heck out of me when used with the guys that claim to be big fans already.

Is that a funky perspective effect in this picture, or is Longo just stacked???

Bucknuts.com - Longo Says Yes To The Buckeyes

If he is 6'5", based on that picture he looks quite a bit more than 260.

His videos are supposedly impressive. Anyone here seen them and care to comment?

My film review from page 5:

Sam has an excellent frame, engages defenders well, has great punch once engaged, and has great footwork in the limited pass protection the film showed. I think Sam has LT written all over him. Once he adds 20-25 pounds of good weight to that frame and adds some strength, Sam is going to be a great OL. The only real objection I have to his game is his weight, which obviously is no big deal. On the comparisons to Barton...I don't see it. Bellbrook runs the ball alot but I see Sam as a pass protection specialist, who can run block well. I always though the vice-versa with Barton. Anyways, I love this offer.

- I also agree with the poster that says he is filling out more now. I'm guessing he was 245-250 in that film. Plus, I didn't know he was playing with a broken wrist. Again, really excited to see Sam in this class and I think he gets the bump to 4 star status soon.

With his speed, quickness and athleticism, does anyone see the chance of moving Sam inside and using him as a pulling Guard?

:osu:

Not me...you want footwork and athleticism like Sam's at tackle. Linsley and Mewhort can pull like beasts, as well as Brewster in '07, so we aren't short on athletic pulling guards. Not to mention we may be getting another great puller in Watt. I see Sam at tackle all the way, LT imo.

Ohio State football: Tressel has long history with '09 recruit's family

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Ohio State football coach Jim Tressel is not stalking the Longo family. It just looks that way.

Sam Longo, an offensive lineman from Bellbrook High School, near Dayton, announced his commitment to the Buckeyes' 2009 recruiting class Monday.

That will continue a relationship that began when Sam's father, Gene, played linebacker at Miami University in 1980. Tressel was on that staff, coaching quarterbacks and receivers.

Gene transferred to Ohio State in 1981. Two years later, Tressel was hired as a Buckeyes assistant.

That history was not the deciding factor in choosing Ohio State, Sam said, "but it was an added bonus. (Gene) has been around coach Tressel and knows what kind of guy he is, so when he tells me what coach Tressel is like, I could believe it."

And what was Tressel like in Gene's playing days?

"Always very personable to everyone," Gene said. "I was pretty low on the totem pole (he was a walk-on at Ohio State and never earned a letter), but I had some nice conversations with him. I didn't think he'd remember me, but he did."

Ohio State continues to show why it has the nation's No. 1 class. Earlier this week, the Buckeyes scored commitment No. 24 from three-star offensive lineman Sam Longo of Bellbrook (Ohio). Longo (6-5/270) has tremendous upside and has increased his strength and size over the summer. If he plays well as a senior with his added bulk, he could climb to the four-star level. That would mean 18 of Ohio State's 24 commitments would be rated four-star prospects or better. The Buckeyes are on their way to having a stranglehold on the nation's top-ranked class.
