OL Sam Longo (transfer to Cincinnati, Columbus Destroyers)

Video: New Buckeye Sam Longo learned what he needs to work on at Ohio State

Ohio State has four freshmen offensive linemen in this class. If form holds, I'll guess that two will redshirt and two will not.

Jack Mewhort, who enrolled for spring ball, has a leg up on the competition, and Marcus Hall is the most highly-rated recruit among the other three, leaving Corey Linsley and Sam Longo as the more likely redshirt candidates at first blush.

Linsley said he needed to work on his technique. Longo said he needs to get stronger, believing he's behind some of his teammates in the weight room.

But there are always surprises. After standing next to the 6-foot-5 Longo and seeing his frame, he looks like he's a guy who has the ability to really muscle up. At the moment, he's a leaner athlete than Hall, who is also 6-5 but about 30 pounds heavier.

"I don't really have expectations," Longo said. "They said they need two offensive linemen to break the two-deep, and I'd like to be one of them, so I'm really preparing myself for that."

Sam's Better Know a Buckeye feature by Vico at ohd.com

Sam Longo isn?t that different from a typical football-playing kid from Ohio: he aspired to play at Ohio State. For Sam, however, that desire took an added significance. His father is Gene Longo, a former outside linebacker for the Buckeyes from 1981-1984 who resumed his playing career at Ohio State as a walk-on after a one year stint at Miami of Ohio. Longo was trying to get noticed, and had even been to some camps at Ohio State. By this time, no offer was coming. Even then, no offer was coming in from anyone, though he was getting interest from places like Iowa, Rutgers, Indiana and others.

cont'd...

Looking at his film, I like his quick feet and his intensity to play until the whistle. As Vico points out, he'll have to be more careful with his hands. I also noticed a tendency to lean forward before the snap, but that should be easily correctable.

With 6 a.m. workouts in full swing, things really started to heat up this winter with the testing phase of the off-season kicking in this past week. On Sunday the Buckeyes hit the track to test their 40 times, but the battle of the bench took place on Friday with a couple of young linemen getting the best of their elder teammates.

?We did the bench Friday. Sam Longo got like 38 on the bench.
Longo, on the other hand, was an underrated offensive tackle who spent last season redshirting. Starting right guard Bryant Browning said to watch out for Longo this season, along with his classmates Marcus Hall, Corey Linsley and Jack Mewhort.

"All our freshmen linemen were pretty strong coming out of high school and it?s really showing when they get here,? Browning said.

I mentioned this before in the recruiting forums -- I think the aggressiveness in the O-line recruiting last year may have had something to do with how the freshman were progressing. Aggressiveness meaning they were willing to wait for the elite lineman even if it meant possibly ending up with only one.

A little surprised by this but best of luck to Sam...just speculating but might have been more to this decision than just playing time...I really thought he had a chance to be a started in 2012-2013.

The Ohio State offensive line has lost one member as Sam Longo has asked for his release from the team. BuckeyeSports.com has more.

Ohio State redshirt freshman Sam Longo has asked for and been granted his release from the university, a spokesperson confirmed Thursday.

The reasons for his decision were not immediately known. The 6-5, 280-pound offensive lineman did not appear on the team's final depth chart prior to the Sugar Bowl and was not afforded a profile among the updated biographies of the Buckeyes included in the final release before the game.

A former three-star recruit from Bellbrook, Ohio, Longo was rated the No. 15 overall prospect from Ohio and the No. 23 offensive tackle in the nation for the class of 2009. After taking a redshirt during his first season, Longo is listed as having seen action in one game this year, appearing in mop-up duty against Eastern Michigan.

BuckeyeSports.com will have more on the situation as it develops.
