PREPS: South tight end picks Ohio State
The allure of winning and remaining a tight end were too much for Reid Fragel to pass on, so the Grosse Pointe South junior committed to Ohio State on Tuesday night.
Fragel is the second state prospect to commit to the Buckeyes. Two weeks ago, wide receiver James Jackson of Grand Ledge said he will sign with Ohio State.
Fragel was recruited by a host of colleges, but eventually chose Ohio State over Michigan State.
"The first time I set foot on the campus, I fell in love with the place," he said Wednesday. "Ever since then, I've been narrowing things down. I went to visit Michigan State (Tuesday) and it just kind of confirmed everything that I made the right decision. After the visit I committed."
Fragel is 6-feet-8, 258 pounds, and has 4.8 speed in the 40. He is the state's top tight end prospect, and his desire to be a tight end in college was a deciding factor in his school decision.
"Everybody kind of talks about the whole tackle thing," he said. "They see my height and the potential to put on a lot more weight and they automatically think tackle. But with Ohio State it was different. They recruited me strictly as a tight end, and I committed as a tight end. As long as I maintain my speed and ability to run some routes and stay agile, I'll be at tight end."
Ohio State has played in the last two BCS national championship games, and that made an impression on Fragel.
"The ability they have to win was important," he said. "I just like to be around guys who like to win, too. It's going to be nice to be on a team with a bunch of guys on the same page as me who are as committed to winning as I am."

Reid is gonna have to do some work to become a good tackle but I think he can. Too bad he didn't want to hear that yet. BTW, Dion Sims is being VERY quiet and I would expect him to go the basketball route before football. Good pickup, but again, I wouldn't excpect him to be a TE for you guys.

From BG..... Has already visited a practice and talks about how he can't wait to get to Ohio State. Says he would like to attend the Penn State & Michigan games and possibly go see the Buckeyes when they travel to Michigan State. Also talks about his goals for the upcoming season.
Gotta hand it to him
Reid Fragel's senior season at Grosse Pointe South has been delayed.
Fragel, a 6-foot-8, 255-pound tight end/defensive end who committed to Ohio State, is out indefinitely after suffering an injury to the thumb on his left hand, which followed an injury to his right hand.
"He broke a bone in his right hand in early June," South coach Tim Brandon said. "Then he was making a tackle in a drill and the guy rolled over with his hip and it bent his left thumb way back."
The second injury required surgery in which a pin was inserted into his hand.
Fragel may be heading to the big time, but he isn't big-timing his team. After undergoing surgery in the morning, Fragel was back at practice for the day's second session.

RESILIENT: Fragel not worried by rumors
Grosse Pointe South TE has committed to Ohio State and willing to play at any position.

GROSSE POINTE -- Let the rumors fly.
Reid Fragel has heard them all. And more.
Fragel, a 6-foot-7, 255-pound tight end from Grosse Pointe South, committed to Ohio State last spring.
Yes, Ohio State.
Not Michigan.
Not Michigan State.
While Fragel said some schools recruited him to play offensive tackle, he chose Ohio State for the opportunity to play tight end.
But there's speculation the Buckeyes staff, notably tight ends coach John Peterson, told Fragel he'd have his shot as tight end but that once in the program, he would be switched to tackle.
"I've talked to Coach Peterson, and we've talked about my weight," Fragel said. "I plan to weigh around 270 when I graduate, and (Peterson) told me as long as I can move I can play tight end.
"I'll play wherever I'm needed. If it's at (offensive) tackle, so be it. I told my coaches here (at South) that I'd play tackle if they needed me to."
Fragel said he also caught some flack -- although, none too serious -- from his classmates after he made his decision to go to Ohio State.
Fragel said he's never rooted for or against Michigan State or Michigan.
It's just that Ohio State seemed like a good fit.
"It's great to be able to play for a team that wants to win as much as you do," he said.
