LANCASTER ? At last week?s Division I, Region 3 track meet at Pickerington North, Lancaster junior Kyle Trout became one of only a handful of people in the past decade to win shot put and discus.
Trout took discus on Wednesday with a throw of 177-feet-4, which beat his previous best by about 18 feet. He threw 55-5 in shot put Friday to complete his double regional championship. Lucas Ferguson of Mount Vernon was the last to do it in 2009. Adam Kellermeyer of Pickerington High School also did it in 2003. Lancaster coach Jeff Koksal mentioned former Golden Gale Tom Stuck in 2005 as somebody who might have done it, but regional results from that year were unavailable.
Doubling as regional champion in those events doesn?t come around often, and Trout has established himself as one of the best in the state by accomplishing the feat. Trout is already committed to Ohio State for football as an offensive lineman. He has continued to play basketball and compete in track through high school, and his overall athleticism is something that has made him appealing, Koksal said.
?I guarantee you he?s not being recruited because he?s just big and just strong,? Koksal said. ?He?s being recruited because he?s quick and nimble. He has all that agility and the physical tools.?
Koksal also credited throws coach Jack Cheek ? who he called the best throws coach in Ohio ? for working with Trout on his form during the start of the season and getting to the point where Trout is breaking through with big throws at important meets.
?He was struggling with the technique,? Koksal said. ?And (Cheek), he?s able to communicate well with the kids and he knows what he?s doing. He got (Trout) to the point where he was absolutely able to break out once he started putting together all those technical pieces.?
Entering Saturday?s state meet in Division I, Trout is eighth in shot put and seventh in discus of all the state qualifiers. Koksal said he thinks Trout has more left in him and could be in line for high finishes and potential All-Ohio honors.
