You could say J.B. Shugarts has loved football since he was little, but he?s never really been little.

He grew up in Texas, where they tell you ? oh, about every 30 seconds ? that everything is big in Texas, including toddlers.

Some toddlers, however, are bigger than others.

Shugarts? mother, Donna, can attest.

?When he was two, he looked like he was five,? she said. ?I?d take him to the grocery store when he was two years old and he was so big I had to put him in the big part of the shopping cart.?

Donna Brittain laughs at that memory now, and she also chuckles at the pace of time?s passing, for all of a sudden her big son is now a big man, a senior on the Ohio State football team.

Shugarts will make his 24th start at right offensive tackle for the Buckeyes today against Colorado, and it?s no surprise why if you stand next to him.

He?s so big it looks as if he has his own zip code and weather pattern.

Shugarts is 6-foot-7 and 300 pounds with the tenacity to play through pain in hopes of someday having an NFL career just as his father, Bret, briefly enjoyed as a defensive end with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

For now, his focus is on the more immediate goal of helping OSU bounce back from a 24-6 loss at Miami which has, as usual, stirred up a hornet?s nest of angst in the Buckeye state, where defeat is an intolerable option.

Not that the competitive Shugarts would want it any other way. He came to OSU in 2008 from Klein, Texas, near Houston. in part because of the program?s traditions and huge expectations.

?Playing for the Buckeyes, you realize this place is so much bigger than you,? Shugarts said. ?As a senior, it really humbles you ? what you?re playing for. Sometimes it feels like there is a lot of pressure and weight on your shoulders, but you?ve got to love it.?
