OL J.B. Shugarts (official thread)

My guess is a chronic foot injury has killed his ability to get off the ball so he tries to compensate by timing the snap..I would be surprised if he is able to continue his football career at the NFL level..

I might agree with you if at times it at least appeared that he took good steps with proper technique. Half the time that's what got him in trouble when he got beat.

I know that a lot of Buckeye fans like to rag on Shugarts, but here's a partial list of Ohio State's starting offensive tackles since Orlando Pace left for the NFL (I might have missed a few guys who started a game here or there):

Tyson Walter
Eric Gohlstin
Brooks Burris
Henry Fleming
Adrien Clarke
Shane Olivea
Ivan Douglas
Rob Sims
Tim Schafer
Kirk Barton
Doug Datish
Alex Boone
Bryant Browning
Andrew Miller
Marcus Hall
Jim Cordle
Mike Adams
J.B. Shugarts
Andrew Norwell
Antonio Underwood

Shugarts doesn't look so bad by comparison, eh? Clearly better than 2/3 of that list, and on par with Olivea, Sims, Barton, Boone, and Norwell. When Adams was on his game, he was definitely better, but he was less consistent due to motivational issues (early) and suspensions (late).

Admittedly, Shugarts didn't live up to his five-star reputation, but he was a solid, steady performer who played through injuries and (with the exception of one very minor incident that never amounted to anything) he didn't have any off-the-field issues.

In a season of turmoil, Shugarts' occasional false starts were the proverbial farts in the windstorm.

Seems like he could be a great prospect for the Raiders.

Nope! Raider linemen have to be adept at holding and other major penalties. His penchant for false start penalties would get him sent to the practice squad since it's on a 5 yarder. Their mantra is "Ten yards or more."

If he false starts at least twice a game, he'll fit in. After all, they are the most penalized team in the NFL. He would fit right in.
