OL Coach Tyler Bowen (Official Thread)

Day may have a quandry this off season. Bowen is a great recruiter but the coaching leaves a lot to be desired.

The blocking needs to get better.

Maybe better recruits will show something. Not sure.
Obviously with the whole countable assistants going away we need a recruiter OL coach and coaching OL coach why try to find the unicorn when you can have the relatedly common of one or the other and just hire 2 of them.

One knows that the OL is performing well, when their names are NOT brought up during a broadcast. But thought Bowen had three assts that had massive NFL experience. Gather we lost one to a OL coordinator position somewhere, but thought (?) that the replacement had been hired. Guess not.

Not really sure what to think of Bowen because it feels like these OL problems have been here much longer than him.
The OL problems where the QB has happy feet, double and triple clutches, misses reads while making terrible off target throws all day (while the run game is respectable outside of idiotic play calls on the goal line)?

I think the OL was fine most of the day, and that was without their best/most dependable lineman.

Yeah I thought they played fine. Both sacks were on Julian too. You can’t hold the ball and had the opportunity to throw the ball away yet walked right into two sacks.

One of those was a screen pass. You can't throw that ball away without it being a penalty. He needs to throw it at the RB's feet.....but by the time that was known, he didn't even have a clear path to the RB. Not much could have been done on that failed play.

It looked like-in real time so I am likely wrong- on the play that got Saying killed that Daniels went to down block to his left while everyone else stepped right.

Maybe it will come out from the X and O guys but that’s what I think I saw.

Yeah Daniels has struggled being on the same page as the others so not sure what’s up with that.

Rewatching the highlights though and Julian maybe had the ball for 3-5 seconds before running right into that sack by #12.

I doubt Curt would want his defense to hurt Julian but before the game Curt was asked how do they stop JJ and he said something like “we need to hit the QB that’s how”.

Considering their goal was to physically batter Julian the OL only giving up 1 legit sack is pretty good for also not having their Captain on the OL.

Side note I thought IU had a lot of late hits on Julian. This was their goal and while football is a physical sport I thought verbalizing their desire to punish Julian wasn’t in the best taste.

It’s an age thing.

Hit the QB doesn’t mean hurt the QB. Only in this day and age of everyone looking to get offended would he need to clarify that difference.

I wasn’t there but saw nothing out of the ordinary as far the game of football goes. Cig is an annoying asshole but that statement was dead on the money.

It was verbalized a bit oddly. I can’t recall what he exactly said but it was enough for me to think “damn that’s an aggressive thing to say” typically coaches are a bit more diplomatic and say “we need to affect the QB”… I don’t think he told the team to hurt Julian or something odd like that.

Was pretty obvious their goal was to hammer the QB at every turn.

I didn’t see it but I’d say that’s probably just his natural annoying asshole Pittsburgh area guy coming across.

Cig is a no bullshit legit great coach but he is also a first class asshole. Just the way he’s wired.

That's exactly what happened. He guessed himself out of good position. I can't find a video of the missed block yet but my memory has him stepping down hard to the left and the D-end slanting outside which got him even with Daniels after the first step, and not many offensive linemen have the foot speed to recover from that and Daniels didn't.

Without knowing the full intent of the play, what Daniels keys were and what the timing was supposed to be, all we can conclude is he missed the block badly and got his QB crushed. There are likely other elements in place but one thing is clear, the play depends on Daniels handling the edge by himself and he didn't.

He said we need to hit the QB before he throws the ball and then looked in the camera because it's fucking obvious that's how to stop any offense at any level. Julian sees ghosts out there, so obviously that's their goal. It was not an odd thing to say or an a****** thing to say. Every defense is trying to sack the quarterback.
