OL Coach Tyler Bowen (Official Thread)

Adding Wendy Laurent as an analyst along with Marcus Johnson and Charlie Dickey as Senior analysts.

Played against Marcus Johnson during the 2001 season. I think they had the best OL in the country that year (Had 4 tackles and a TFL that game).

Sneaky good pick up, he did a great job developing Marcus Mbow at Purdue and has a lot of southern recruiting ties.

While Bowen will be the offensive line coach at Ohio State, he was the offensive coordinator at Virginia Tech for the last three years. Three of his top offensive playmakers over the last two years were running back Bhayshul Tuten and wide receivers Jaylin Lane and Da’Quan Felton; now, all three of them have a chance to be selected in the 2025 NFL draft.

All of them praised Bowen’s coaching during their interview sessions at the NFL Scouting Combine on Friday.

“I love Coach T-Bow, man,” Lane told Eleven Warriors. “He's a hard worker, one of the hardest-working coaches I've been around. And I'm happy for him, going up to Ohio State, and I know he's going to be just as vigilant as he was as an OC for their O-line. So they got a good one.”

Like Lane, Tuten also pointed to Bowen’s work ethic when asked about his former offensive coordinator.

“He's a great coach,” Tuten said. “He comes in day in and day out, puts his best foot forward. He was our OC, so he tried to find a lot of ways to make us successful. He puts a lot of hard work in, hours in; usually like the first one in, last one out, we see his truck out there. So he definitely cares about the team he's coaching for, and I definitely think they're getting a great coach.”

Felton said Bowen was “always encouraging and motivating” and that “he has a great love for the game.” Tuten and Felton both pointed to Bowen’s football smarts as another one of his strengths, praising his ability to scout opposing defenses and put together effective game plans.

“He put us in the best position,” Tuten said. “He did a great job scouting defenses and drawing up plays that he thinks we'll be most successful with, and I think that's what helped us a lot.”

New Ohio State Offensive Line Coach Tyler Bowen Brings Personable Recruiting Approach, Coordinating Background to Complement Brian Hartline

It was easy to tell what attracted Ohio State to Tyler Bowen and what attracted Tyler Bowen to Ohio State on Friday.

The former Virginia Tech offensive coordinator proved personable in his first interview with the Buckeyes’ media, showcasing why he’s developed a reputation as a top-tier recruiter. A coach’s candor with reporters isn’t always an indicator of future success, but it’s easy to see why players might relate to him.

“I think, number one, to be at a premier program in college football,” Bowen said of why he came to Ohio State. “I think the way the games go on and the way this place has been for decades and decades, that's obviously attractive. But the second reason, maybe even a bigger part of it, is getting back to my roots. I’m an O-line guy. Being a coordinator for the last three years, that's where my eyes are going. To be able to coach a position like that that's my roots, at a place like this, that was all attractive. Coach Day's vision for the program, all those things align with what I want.”

Ryan Day has brought Bowen aboard to better the results of Ohio State’s notoriously lackluster recruiting efforts along the offensive line in recent years and support offensive coordinator Brian Hartline – particularly in the running game – as the superstar wide receivers coach takes his first shot at calling plays.

“He played the position. He's a very, very good coach, he understands it,” Day said. “Even in a short period of time, you can ask our offensive linemen, he's on it. And then we have a really good support staff behind him that we hired that I think are excellent. And they've got a lot of energy. You can feel them when they come into the building, the coaches. And so we'll work through the spring and kind of see and evaluate how that goes, but I think that he's going to work tremendous with Brian.”
