OL Coach Tyler Bowen (Official Thread)

Uh, I think that’s a little revisionist history. The other big problem with Frye in recruiting is his utter lack of offers. That was a MAJOR issue many of us had. He narrowed in on a select few and left himself little room for error. Frye offered 19(2022), 15(2023) and 18(2024), for example. Most teams were offering at least 25-30 OL. I know the man just won an NC, and brought together a great OL. But the depth issues were of his doing. And Bowen was brought in to not continue that issue.
NIL out bidding will continually be a thing, but that’s why you send out more offers and weed out the kids who only care about that. even though OSU won the Natty, it stung a little watching Aamil Wagner, a Columbus kid starting at OT for ND. Or seeing Carter Smith sign with IU when he’s from Cbus as well
Oh the lack of offers was definitely a criticism from me as well, but I don't think that changes the fact that 5 star offensive linemen are the belle of the ball now, who demand more.

To echo that general sentiment, Frye failed to cast a wide net. I know I keep repeating myself, but I will apply this to the Bowen hire. It seems that Bowen is an effective recruiter and a big help in a major target region (VA, DMV, etc.). If Bowen is the able and willing recruiter as pitched, he can be slightly below what Frye was in terms of development. In other words, it could be a wash and one that I think we would all love.

Frye got warranted criticism on recruiting, but redeemed himself with developing what he had available. I am hoping Bowen can recruit and also coach well, a blend would leave us in the same good position or better moving forward.

Question I have were the offers given solely determined by Frye or did someone higher up the food chain have to approve before an offer was given?

My favorite part of that was Tress, in the very best Tress way, patiently tolerating Gruden while he ran his mouth.
There are very few people that when they talk, I listen. JT is one of them. He is so well thought out and meticulous. Gruden I like, but he does talk too much. Anyways, I think Tress enunciated why a coach at TE can translate that into good OL coaching and beyond.

As the OL coach he pretty much has autonomy to offer who he wants who he deems is OSU worthy. That's why he was hired as that position's coach, to identify the talent and then procure it. Problem is, his method of limited offers would work at a place like UCLA, where he could just get the lower tier CA kids, that won't cut it at OSU.

I hate to say, and Steve19 can/will probably vouch for this, that I'm naturally more Gruden than Tressel, but I make a concerted effort to be more like Tressel.

Agreed, that the general theory makes sense. There's going to be variation, of course, based on the coach, but TE does require that you learn it all.

The TE position is the most versatile on the football field and TE's end up being some of the greatest coaches because of that. I am certainly biased having played the position for about 10 years but it still reverberates with me every game I watch at any level. A dominant TE is terrifying for a Defense and it opens everything on the Offense. Let's hope we keep getting that from our guys and I'd put our current room up against anyone!

A dominant TE with a pop star girlfriend is terrifying for all of us.
