OL Alex Boone (Official Thread)

ESPN is reporting that Boone had to be subdued with a taser!

I remember the recruitment of a 6'8", hulking O-Lineman that was supposed to rival Orlando Pace in terms of football accolades and prestige...

4-5 years ago, I did not see this one coming. Someone help this kid before the headlines report something even more tragic!

The AP is reporting it's worse than that

Orange County sheriff's spokesman Jim Amormino says the 6-foot-8, 312-pound tackle was jumping on car hoods, yanking on a tow truck cable and trying to break a window when he was arrested late Sunday.

Amormino says the 21-year-old, who appeared intoxicated, was combative and uncooperative with sheriff's deputies and had to be taken down with a Taser. He was taken to a hospital and then to a jail medical ward, where he remains.

And for the record, no, he didn't go out drinking with me.

Ohio State football: A statement from Alex Boone
by Doug Lesmerises
Monday February 02, 2009, 9:06 PM
Alex Boone's mother, Amy, just called me with a statement from Alex that he wished to convey after his arrest in the Los Angeles area late Sunday night. Boone, the former left tackle for Ohio State, was alleged to have a blood alcohol level more than three times the legal limit and police had to use a taser to subdue him:

"I made a major mistake by having way too much to drink last night and I deeply regret the trouble I caused for all concerned. I am not proud of my actions and I recognize that my behavior is inexcusable.

"To better address these personal issues, I have decided to seek professional treatment to deal with these issues head on."

Amy Boone said Alex will not be entering a treatment facility, but plans, with the help of his agent, to meet with professional counselors in Los Angeles while continuing to work out there in preparation for February's NFL Combine and the NFL Draft in late April.

OSU's Alex Boone charged in drunken outburst

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
The mother of Ohio State offensive tackle Alex Boone said today that her son "has a problem that needs addressed" after Boone was arrested late Sunday after a drunken outburst in Alisa Viejo, Calif.
Amy Boone said she had talked with Alex several times yesterday, "and he's hurting. He feels terrible that he let so many people down," she said.

"What do you do? You tell him you love him and support him and that we'll go after this (problem) like we need to."

Alex Boone posted bond and was released tonight from a jail in Santa Ana.

According to Orange County sheriff's spokesman Jim Amormino, police responded to a call of a man yelling and jumping on cars outside an apartment building. Amy Boone said it was the building Alex is living in while he's training for the NFL draft.

"He wasn't driving. He didn't hurt anybody," she said.

Amormino said that when police arrived, Boone at first tried to flee. Because he appeared to be heavily intoxicated, police transported him to Saddleback Hospital. There, Amormino said Boone was yelling and cursing at nurses.

Boone then was taken to jail, but remained so uncooperative that the booking process could not be completed.

During the process, Boone had to be stunned with Tasers several times in order to be subdued.

He has been charged with resisting arrest and obstructing police. Amormino said Boone could face more charges, related to public drunkenness and/or related to the damage to cars. Prosecutors have not yet handled the case.

Amormino said Boone's blood-alcohol level was at least three times the legal limit for drivers, which is 0.08 percent, just as it is in Ohio. Boone is 6-foot-8 and 312 pounds.

OSU coach Jim Tressel was disappointed by the news.

"Alex headed to California to focus solely on his training," Tressel said. "It is so disappointing to hear that he had this mishap. His intentions were to prepare for his NFL dream."

Can we support this guy through thick and thin? Is he not family? I probably went and repped an earmuff-worthy post earlier for how true to the core that it was, but when we took Alex Boone into the Buckeye family 4 years ago, wasn't it for life? We acted like it was, at least back then we did.

Why is it not understood now? Let's get on the plus side with Alex, and support his ass. I don't think I'm alone when I say that he could use it. Beat him down? Wayyyyy too easy.

When your family screws up do you criticize them? Does the rest of your family talk about how stupid they were?

Everyone wants to see Alex clean up his act, but you can't deny that he's not using his best judgement. I can't say if the guy is an Alcie, or if he just likes to party a lot, but the end result is the same, it needs to stop because it's obvious he doesn't know when to stop and the people around him aren't helping.

Ummm, no. Signing a letter of intent does not grant one a lifetime immunity for being called out for the stupidity of one's actions. In fact, I'd argue the opposite. These athletes are given a $40k (120K for out of staters) education and the opportunity to wear the Scarlet and Grey on Saturday afternoons.

With that, I'd argue comes the responsibility not to embarrass the university and draw unwanted attention to its football program.

I hope the guy can learn from this and get his shit together. Sweeping it under the rug and "supporting him no matter what" won't be the catalyst towards that end. A good bit of public humiliation and criticism, however, just might.

When my family screws up, it is hashed out in a room. Criticizing is not a good word. If the rest of my family (cousins, aunts, uncles) talked about how stupid I was, I would be put off, big-league style.

If we are going by the above definition of family, BP can be considered a distant relative. I don't see the need to abandon Alex Boone, as a Buckeyes fan, when this guy clearly needs help.

I don't see anyone abandoning anyone, I see a lot of people who are disappointed, and quite a few that are really said that they aren't surprised. And we can't really hash anything out in a room, but we can sit and talk and hope he gets better.

I could use an example of another Buckeye who had problems getting his act together, but I can't do that, it's apples to coffee mugs as far as the comparison goes.

I just hope Alex gets his act together.

Unfortunately (unfortunate at the moment), Alex is a fairly public figure. If he's put-off by public criticism of his stupidity, he only has himself to blame.

I certainly hope he gets help. He has a tremendous opportunity. I'm very glad he's recognized his problem and is going to get help. But at the moment, the criticism is not going away, whether people think it's fair or not.

If I mis-read the intent of some earlier posts, then everyone can now be in agreement. I wasn't getting that vibe from everyone.

Damn shame to see this. Brings back flashes of what happened a few years back with.. yeah.

Sad that Alex was so talented, and he never really IMO played to full potential here. I was kind of hoping he was going to get it turned around at the NFL level as far as on the field play went.. now I just hope he can turn around his real life and maybe give himself a shot to get drafted again.

Never can have an entirely good week can you? The Santonio thing started us off on the right note.... This not so much.

Depends on how bad they fucked up. My dumbass brother is in prison now by committing some pretty heinous shit, and now has me having to pay for my mother and stepdad's mortgage until they die. Fuck him. I never, ever, thought I would ever say that about him, but he fucking crossed the line by a mile. And he's blood family, not some total stranger who just happened to play football for four years for my favorite team. So, if I've lost all compasion for my own flesh and blood, I have absolutely zero sympathy for Mr. Boone.

Boone's drinking has been an ongoing problem. He did not get sober after that DUI incident his sophomore year and just now fall off the wagon in an isolated incident.

I have an uncle who is a long term alcoholic. He's 7 years younger than my Dad but he looks 20 years older than that and has never held a steady job. He's been in and out of jail for stuff like what Boone did, DUI's and just getting drunk and belligerent. It's no way to live and I hope Boone gets some help, not to save his football career but to save his life.
