Ohio State's Freshman Class

I heard the ACT was dumbed down twice since I took it in 1990. Do you know if that is true?

Good question. I don't know. I do know that there's been some inflation on test scores due to all the additional test prep being done these days.

The best that I could find on the web was that 28 is at the 93rd percentile (which matches up closely to the average class rank for 2007) and equates to a 1260 on the SAT.

I'm a proud Aunt, happy to report that of all the acceptance letters one of my nieces received she has decided on tOSU and starting this fall will receive an academic scholarship into the Honors Science program... woohoo, I am damn proud!

Oh yeah, she will also be rowing!

Great news. Congratulations on her pre-acceptance into Honors & Scholars.

Out of curiosity, where else was she accepted to/considering?

OSU's freshman class is brightest ever, again

As a group, the freshmen "set a new standard," he said, with an average ACT composite score of 27.3, up from 27 last year. The SAT scores are up, too.

Of the 6,050 to 6,100 freshmen expected this year (the number was 6,110 last year), more than half were in the top 10 percent of their high school academically, up from 26 percent in 1997, the university said.

Yield. Not everybody who's accepted will attend. Our yield has been in the 45-50% range for the last several years.

It will be interesting to see if that will go up with the ever-increasing standards and reputation and the weak economy.

I do hope they're still willing to take occasional chances on immature socially inept kids with 30+ ACTs and little else (yet) to commend them though.

Always interesting to see the stats.

Hopefully none of those kids from California came from SoCal, 'cause I question their sanity to move into this shitty weather.

(half-kidding )

Ha, personally know of four from so cal and I do question their sanity.

Am I the only one that does not see this as a positive? I see Clev's list with all of those geographical locations and just see that Ohio kids are getting shut out.

Fine, the school is getting smarter. But if my Ohio kid is a B student with a 25 on the ACT he ain't getting in.

Frankly that pisses me off. There should be preference for qualified OHIO kids first, and then fill the classes with OOS students.

It's my tax $'s, and I think Ohioans should come first.
