Ohio State Wrestling (2015/2017/2018 B1G Champs, 2015 National Champs, 2019 National Runners-up)

LIVING THE DREAM. Ohio State wrestler Zach Steiner always knew he'd be a Buckeye, but it seems his plans to be a two-sport star hit a snag somewhere along the way.

To be fair, I have no doubts at all that he would have been a "freight train middle linebacker," and Ross Homan is an extremely on-brand hero. My heroes were always Mike Nugent and Andy Groom, because my self-awareness was highly developed at age eight.

On one hand, in life you have to make some pretty heady, serious choices that define who you are as a person. This week we sit down with Ohio State wrestling head coach Tom Ryan to talk about his new book, Chosen Suffering, and how the hard choices he had to make after the death of his son impacted him and his faith. It's a deep, fascinating conversation, and I recommend that everyone check it out.

0:00 Yes, I would 100% trade a win over Clemson (especially a win over Clemson in the natty) for a loss to Michigan. Because it's 2020, not 1998.

18:53 Tom Ryan talks about life and choice.

New commit, not sure how impact he is....but boy he looks ripped.

https://www.elevenwarriors.com/ohio...y-echemendia-commits-to-wrestle-at-ohio-state

This guy has a ton of personality for sure. Pretty sure he will be right up there with DeSanto and Gable (Minnesota) as the "most hated" guys in NCAA wrestling next year. Guy talks a lot of twitter trash and is pretty brash. In that he fits more of the UFC fight build up model than the old school still largely prevalent wrestling model in which showing emotion is still largely frowned upon by the majority. (Similar to Baseball)

He should have a big impact though, will be as good as anyone on his feet from day one, but he could struggle on the mat his first season as he bas been more of a freestyle/greco specialist that is learning folkstyle. He managed to find about the only state in the country that would allow him to compete as a senior due to turning 21 this summer. So it gave him a nice year of experience building on the mat, but he will likely need more time. Will be a problem for everyone on their feet though.

He will be controversial and probably hated by other teams, but I mostly ok with it if he is on my team and not a hothead. That being said, I prefer the workman type that just has their hand raised after kicking some ass, except for those really big wins where you show some emotion. Lots of our top wrestlers exemplified that, but Kollin Moore comes to mind and maybe that is just because he is the most recent.

Definitely will have a big impact and should jump right into that 157 shot and shine. I see him being a guy that early on pulls off some huge wins and looks spectacular, and the has some head scratching losses to guys who excel at wrestling on the mat. Then later in the year, coaching and experience start to catch up with his talent, and then he is a serious contender come March. At least that is what I am hoping for. He should make up for the big hole at 157 and give us a very tough middle of the lineup going (presumably) Sasso, Echemendia, Kharchla/Smith and Romero.

Question if the lower/heavier weights step up. I like Rocky to make a big leap at 184 and Singletary should be much improved wrestling at 197, plus Orndorff is potentially an AA at heavy, so I like us at the top of the roster too. But Heinselman or Jacob Decatur need to make a big jump at 125, same goes for Jordan Decatur at 133 although he showed some bright patches. At 141, I tend to think Kinner drops back down to there and I like him there, but still unproven. Otherwise, I think you might see a Stickley/D'Emilio battle, where both wrestlers were highly ranked in HS and capable, but just have to make the next step.

Moore becomes the sixth Ohio State wrestler to earn the Big Ten Medal of Honor, joining Harry Steel (1924), James Bachman (1932), Ron Gharbo (1988), Mike DiSabato (1991) and Kyle Snyder (2018).

Moore, who won 110 of his 121 career matches at Ohio State, became just the fourth wrestler in school history to finish a season with an undefeated record this year. He was a finalist for the Dan Hodge Trophy as one of the NCAA's top wrestlers in 2019-20, and was the heavy favorite to win a national title at 197 pounds had the NCAA Tournament not been canceled due to COVID-19. Off the mat, Moore has a bachelor's degree in business operations management and is pursuing a master's degree in kinesiology.

Seth Shutmate on His Sophomore Season and Goals for the Rest of His High School Career

AR-190829451.jpg

When it comes to men’s sports at Ohio State, the football and basketball programs get most of the attention, but among the other program that deserves more attention is wrestling.

The Buckeyes are a perennial national powerhouse on the mats. One of the reasons they have been able to sustain that success is because of the high level at which they recruit. Right now they have one commitment in both the 2021 and 2022 class, both of whom are top 10 pound-for-pound wrestlers in their class, along with also being Ohio’s top prospect for their respective classes.

In the 2021 class, that commitment is Paddy Gallagher, who hails from wrestling powerhouse St. Edward High Shcool. He is ranked as the seventh-best prospect in the country according to Flo Wrestling. He has also won one state title as a sophomore at 160 pounds after finishing third as a freshman at the 152-pound weight class. He was projected to win the 2020 Division I 160-pound state title before the season was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

However, it is Ohio State’s 2022 wrestling commitment that may be an even better prospect, and he is a local guy to boot.

Last August, Dublin Coffman sophomore wrestler Seth Shumate was ranked as one of the top wrestling prospects for the 2022 class after winning a Division I state title as a freshman at 195 pounds. Later that same month before even starting his sophomore year on the mat, Shumate pledged his services to the Ohio State Buckeyes. And while he was only a young sophomore at the time, he has quickly risen to stardom after winning a 195-pound title at Walsh Ironman last December and being the odds-on favorite to defend his 195-pound state title as a sophomore. Or at least he was until the season was canceled due to COVID-19.

Initially, there was no immediate plan to write about wrestling when Buckeye Scoop launched yesterday, but someone on our Ask the Insiders message board asked about, it so we went out and got some goods on the wrestling Bucks for you fans out there.

This morning we got Ohio’s top 2022 prospect Seth Shumate on the phone and talked to him about a variety of topics. But first, we discussed losing out on his chance to be a four-time state champion due to COVID-19.

“I was kind of upset at first, knowing I have been looking up at that goal since I was a little kid,” Shumate told Buckeye Scoop. “But moving forward I knew I couldn’t just sit around and just be upset about it all the time, so I was looking to get the next best thing, looking forward to being a three-timer and just win as much as possible going into college.”

New wrestling article up on Buckeye Scoop (free). Writer Mick Walker interviews future Buckeye Paddy Gallagher who says he's helping recruit Shayne Van Ness, Richie Figueroa, and Rylan Rogers , a 182 lber from Blair Academy. These 3 guys plus Paddy would rival the FB recruiting haul, heck even 2 of them would be maybe the best class OSU has had in years. Go Paddy!
