Ohio State Wrestling (2015/2017/2018 B1G Champs, 2015 National Champs, 2019 National Runners-up)

Sebastian Rivera (aka SeaBass) from Northwestern has entered the transfer portal. Would be a darn good fit at OSU. He battled injury last season but finished B10 champ while sporting a 13-2 record with both Ls by injury DQ.

According to FloWrestling, Rivera graduated from Northwestern and will transfer as a graduate student. If he doesn’t end up at Rutgers, Rivera will have no shortage of suitors.

Good thing he won't have to sit out a year; because he doesn't have one. He was a red shirt Junior this last school year (2019-2020).

I'm thinking a one year highly ranked guy like this working in the room with a then redshirting Decatur would be the best way to go. Thoughts?

Sebastian Rivera Enrolls at Rutgers

Two-time All-American, two-time Big Ten Champion and New Jersey native Sebastian Rivera has enrolled at Rutgers University as a graduate transfer student. Rivera, who previously competed at Northwestern from 2016-20, is immediately eligible to participate in 2020-21 for Rutgers wrestling and will have one season of eligibility remaining.

"We're excited to welcome Sebastian back home to Jersey and cannot wait to get him in our wrestling room with the rest of the guys," said head coach Scott Goodale. "Sebastian is an instant threat to win both a Big Ten and national title and it is awesome he will have an opportunity to do so in his home state with a Rutgers singlet on."

Would have been a huge pickup, we could have seriously used him at 125. He and Suriano at 125 and 133 is going to make for one brutal start to dual meets. The Decaturs are going to both have to make some really big jumps this year for us to be competitive at the lower weights.

Stanford cuts 11 sports varsity sports from athletics department due to 'limited financial resources'

Stanford University announced Wednesday that it will cut nearly one-third of its Division I sports programs at the end of the 2020-21 academic year as the COVID-19 crisis has threatened to worsen an already existing athletics department deficit. The move will affect more than 240 student-athletes and 22 coaches, according to a letter from school leadership.

The 11 sports that will be discontinued are as follows: men's and women's fencing, field hockey, lightweight rowing, men's rowing, co-ed and women's sailing, squash, synchronized swimming, men's volleyball and wrestling. University president Marc Tessier-Lavigne, provost Persis Drell and athletic director Bernard Muir signed the letter which detailed the "heartbreaking news."

Does Stanford have any wrestlers that Ohio State would be interested in?

Probably two that would start, both with Top 5 potential. Real Woods is a lightweight and Shane Griffith an medium/upper weight. I've seen it posited
a lineup could go ..
Heinselman 125
Decatur 133
Echemendia 141
Woods 149
Sasso 157
Kharchla 165
Griffith 174
Romero /Jordan 184
Hoffman/Singletary 197
Orndorff HWT.

Still weak in the lights with Decatur struggling to make weight but overall very solid assuming they could get ..or even want the Stanfords.

Obviously very speculative, but Echemendia is never going to hit 141...he is projected 157 but could maybe get 149. Would need Woods at 141 and Ecehemendia at 149. I think there will be Sasso and Echemendia at 149/157, however it shakes out. Griffith is a stud, but not sure if he can break through a lineup of Kharchla/Jordan/Smith. But don't get me wrong, I would be thrilled if we got either of Woods or Griffith.

Yeah I would be too. Seems we're always a couple guys short of Iowa and PSU, at least the last couple years and getting one or both of those guys wouls eliminate that deficit in a hurry. Oh by the way you were right on Woods/Echemendia..I had them reversed, my bad!

As of today Real Woods is in the portal. Time for TR to pull another McKenna and reel him in!

Definitely get McKenna to reel Woods in, that would be a big time add. The roster is going to improve in that scenario no matter how it shakes out. But if Woods can go 141 and transfers here, it would be great.

WRESTLING: NO. 4 ANDRE GONZALES IS OHIO STATE'S SECOND COMMITMENT IN THE CLASS OF 2021

There are a handful of really outstanding wrestlers still on the board in the Class of 2021, and Ohio State just earned the commitment of one of the top lightweights in the country. Andre Gonzales, the fourth-ranked 113-pound prospect in the country according to FloWrestling, announced via Instagram that he would wrestle his collegiate career for the Buckeyes.

Gonzales chose Ohio State over Cornell, Wisconsin and Missouri. He won a California high school championship at 106 pounds last year for Poway high school, a major wrestling program in the San Diego area.

The future Buckeye burst onto the scene last summer, as he won both the Greco-Roman and Freestyle championships at Junior Nationals in Fargo. He'll be the second man on the roster to be a 2019 double-Fargo champion, as Anthony Echemendia accomplished the same feat at 145 pounds.

Ohio State badly wanted a top-shelf lightweight in this recruiting class to succeed current 125-pounder Malik Heinselman. The Buckeyes were also actively pursuing Arizona State commitment Richie Figueroa, the No. 1 overall prospect in the class. Gonzales may not be the top-ranked guy in the class, but he's a guy with an incredible amount of upside potential as evidenced by his Fargo success, and by the fact that finished the season as the No. 2 ranked 106 in the country.

He fills a major area of need for the Buckeyes; Heinselman is a rising junior this season, so a Gonzales redshirt year will coincide with the current starter's final go-round. The Koontz brothers and Jacob Decatur are the three other Buckeyes currently listed on the roster at 125.

Gonzales is the second commitment in this class, joining 2020 Ohio Most Outstanding Wrestler Paddy Gallagher, who committed in December. Tom Ryan and his staff also have a big-time commitment in the Class of 2022 from Ohioan Seth Shumate.

Figeroa is a 120-pound prospect who is committed to Arizona State and is ranked as the top pound-for-pound wrestler in the country. And despite being committed to the Sun Devils, Figueroa is still very much listening to the message that Ohio State head coach Tom Ryan is laying out for him.

Buckeye Scoop spoke with Figueroa to gauge his interest in the Buckeyes and to see how he currently feels about the Sun Devils.

“It is kind of hard because there are other coaches that want me to come to their school so I check them out. I still have two (official) visits left, so it has been rough with the Coronavirus to check other schools out,” he said of his current commitment.

Certainly, one of those schools interested in flipping Figueroa is the Ohio State Buckeyes, and there appears to be mutual interest.

“I am talking to coach Tom Ryan and coach Anthony Ralph,” he said. “Their message to me is very loving and caring. They support their wrestlers, they don't give up on them, and they are always trying to do what's best for their wrestlers. That's how I see them.”

Figueroa has already taken three official visits, including one of which to Columbus to see Ohio State’s campus.

“The trip went great and I really had my eyes opened,” he said. “Different things from where I am from. It [Columbus] is a way larger city than where I am from and I kind of liked it.”

When it comes to his recruitment and the potential of flipping to Ohio State, Figueroa left the door open.

“They are both great schools and I believe in every coach that is trying to recruit me because they are there for a reason — to make national champs,” he said. “I am still trying to decide which one to pick, but I still have a lot of schools to look at.”

One other person who is working hard for the Buckeyes to try and flip Figueroa is 2021 OSU wrestling commitment, Paddy Gallagher. The two initially met last year at Flowrestling ‘Who’s Number One’ event, and while both were locked in on their match, they still took the time to introduce themselves. Ever since that point, Gallagher has slowly begun to do his part in this recruitment as he tries to bring in the country's best class in 2021.

All in on Figueroa, desperately need a stud at 125...may project at 133, but just get him here.

Edit: Just saw the Gonzalez commitment, big get there! #1 wrestler in the nation at 103 on InterMat. Doesn't change how bad I want to flip Figueroa though.
