WRESTLING: OHIO STATE'S SAMMY SASSO NAMED INTERMAT FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR

InterMat named Ohio State 149-pounder Sammy Sasso its Freshman of the Year after the Nazareth, Penn., native finished the season with an impressive 24-3 record and No. 3 in the country.

Considered a legitimate title contender as the No. 3 seed in the coronavirus-cancelled NCAA tournament, Sasso spent the latter weeks of the season as the top-ranked wrestler in the class after upending Iowa's then-top-ranked Pat Lugo in Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

2. KOLLIN MOORE, WRESTLING
Moore achieved perfection in his senior season at Ohio State, winning all 27 of the matches he wrestled this year. The 197-pounder dominated his competition from start to finish, as his 27 wins – including 13 wins against top-25 opponents – included 10 major decisions, six tech falls and four pins, earning bonus points for the Buckeyes in 74 percent of his matches.

After rolling through the conference competition to win his first Big Ten title, Moore appeared to be well on his way to a national title as the No. 1 NCAA Tournament seed in his weight class. The coronavirus outbreak robbed him of that opportunity, but he became just the fourth wrestler in Ohio State history to finish a season with an unblemished record, and just the third to do it with at least 27 wins for the season. He is also a finalist for the Hodge Trophy, college wrestling’s equivalent to the Heisman Trophy.

4. LUKE PLETCHER, WRESTLING
Pletcher won all but one of his 27 matches in his senior season at Ohio State. He took home the Big Ten title at 141 pounds, avenging his only regular-season loss by beating Penn State’s Nick Lee in the finals, and was chosen to be the No. 1 seed in the weight class in the NCAA Tournament before it was ultimately canceled.

Pletcher’s 26 wins for the season included 15 wins against ranked opponents and 11 wins by major decision, two tech falls and three pins. He helped lead the Buckeyes to a 10-4 dual meet record and a third-place team finish at the Big Ten championships, and was the clear frontrunner to win the 141-pound national title after fourth-place finishes in both 2018 and 2019.

WRESTLING: KOLLIN MOORE FINISHES SEASON AS HODGE TROPHY RUNNER-UP

113122_h.jpeg

Three-time Big Ten champion Kollin Moore finished second in the Dan Hodge Trophy voting, earning three first-place votes. He was the only Buckeye to finish the season with a perfect record, and one of just eight Division I wrestlers to do so this year.

Iowa's Spencer Lee, a two-time NCAA Champion, won the honor with 52 of a possible 56 first-place votes. Northwestern's Ryan Deakin and Stanford's Shane Griffith each received one first-place vote.

Moore was one of eight finalists for the award, presented annually to the nation's best wrestler in Division I. The trophy is named for Dan Hodge, the three-time NCAA champ (1955-57) from the University of Oklahoma who went 46-0 in his college career, recording 36 pins while never allowing a takedown.

Criteria for the award include overall record, number of pins, dominance and quality of competition. Past credentials, sportsmanship, citizenship and heart are secondary criteria used when two finalists have similar stats.

Moore's 27 wins include 10 major decisions, six tech falls and four pins. Nearly half of his wins came against opponents ranked in the top-25, and he earned bonus points in eight of those 13 bouts. Setting aside his four wins by fall, he outscored the competition 341-116 (+225).

He would have been the No. 1 seed at 197 pounds had the NCAA Wrestling Championships happened earlier this month in Minneapolis as scheduled.

Hwt. Tate Orndorff from Utah Valley State (Big 12 for wrestling) transferring to Ohio St. He was a seeded wrestler for NCAAs that were cancelled.

He'll have two years of eligibility remaining. The addition of another heavyweight to the roster all but confirms that Chase Singletary will move down to 197 pounds as Kollin Moore's successor.

Ohio State has planned for Singletary to take an Olympic redshirt this season while Greg Kerkvliet wrestled heavyweight. Kerkvliet's defection to Penn State scuttled those plans, but Singletary was injured at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational and will likely seek a medical redshirt to retain three years of eligibility.

Fan favorite Gary Traub held down the heavy end of the lineup this season and earned the 19th seed to the NCAA Wrestling Championships. Orndorff was slated as the No. 8 seed.

In addition to his folkstyle success at Utah Valley, Orndorff has an impressive Greco-Roman resume. He won the U23 Team Trials to earn a spot on the U23 World Team and competed at the UWW World Greco Championships.
