Ohio State Wrestling (2015/2017/2018 B1G Champs, 2015 National Champs, 2019 National Runners-up)

It's been my experience that in a community, there's a wrestling/baseball/swimming/basketball person that's willing to give their time on an on-going basis to teach/train youngsters. And having facilities donated to do so. Daughter played 'team basketball' and we traveled, played games all over, and parents contributed dollars for coach to get paid, plus tournament entry fees. Our area had some darn fine women's softball teams, and women's basketball teams, that won state awards (California) year over year, and parents lined up to get their daughter's on those teams. So, extrapolating this to men's wrestling, it takes a former wrestler, with the time, energy, and desire to continue to coach the young 'uns, and not for a while, but on a long-term basis.....

And they do, but it’s not cheap.

Theres “club” wrestling gyms all over the place. Usually owned by a former wrestler who hires “coaches” who have a long history in wrestling.

From the clubs we’ve been members at, the rate is typically $120-$150 a month which includes 4 practices a week (M - F) and access to an open mat on Sundays which is free for anyone. Coaches usually travel to regional events to support kids during tournaments.

It is definitely time consuming and they have to love it. There’s typically a regional tournament every weekend in season, and probably a tournament monthly they’ll attend out of the winter season. But you can tell they’re fully invested in it….they love the sport and seeing kids grow.

As I explain to my buddies who have never been around wrestling, even if my son never makes it beyond HS wrestling, the culture he’s around nearly daily will pay off in the future. You can’t fake it in wrestling and these kids & adults that he’s with consistently, are there to support and uplift. It’s different than any sport I was around as a kid….the sport is such a grind, the respect everyone has for one another is at a different level.

Any thoughts on the upcoming #1 v #2 Ohio State Buckeyes? From what I hear/read, PSU is the juggernaut that everyone is chasing. And maybe in reality, their #2's might be the actual #2 in the nation? Or am I overstating. tOSU has done a great job, and believe (?) I read that smushed Iowa and Nebraska in a meet, all at once? Pretty heady stuff certainly. Anyway, will look to see if B10 channel will cover. Cale has done a yeoman's job to elevate PSU into a team that is dominating everyone. One wonders if PSU is allocating big bucks to this program (wouldn't be unlikely) to maintain the dominance. Probably more important since there's nothing like the NFL waiting wrestlers at the end of the rainbow....Go Bucks!

Mendez somehow is looking better and better, amazing.
Very fun to see the team wrestling this good at this point of the year. I was worried the surprise hot start would cool off but it hasn't. I wonder what was different prep wise?
Davino and Cannon are looking so, so good.

Just a fun team to watch, aggressive, and get after it...Minny looked afraid to go for a takedown, not sure if passive is their style like with Iowa, but it's just not a fun watch for their fans.

Minnesota seems to have guys that are great in the top position and don't go for conventional takedowns on their feet. Not every guy is like that, but that has been my overall impression recently. However, part of it is we are dominating ties and staying in good position, shots are pretty tough to come by in that scenario.

This is a really fun team to watch and I love how much we have opened up on offense and got aggressive as you said. Some years I have complained about wrestlers being too cautious and this team is calculated aggression. Davino looks amazing right now, he will beat anyone if he wrestles to his potential and is definitely exceeding my expectations for his first year starting. Speaking of expectations, Cannon has absolutely shattered mine. He is so fun to watch and he IS competing for a title this year.

Since we have the results posted, I will just say that dual and the previous recent duals have been extremely impressive. I have a hard time to believe we could actually top PSU (we might be awfully close if Rocco didn't transfer there), but I wouldn't be surprised if we make it very interesting. Need a great B1G tourney to bolster our seeds, but I can't wait to see this team in conference finals and the NCAAs. I will save my specific predictions until then, but this team is really, really fun to watch...this is exactly what I have been looking for in years' past in terms of a complete team from top to bottom that is aggressive.
