Solid win for the Bucks this evening. They beat Oregon State 41-3. The only loss was Geog 8-7 in the tiebreaker. Geog was up 7-5 with about 18 seconds left. He needed to ride his opponent out to win the match as the other guy had riding time locked up. Kid escaped with about 4-5 seconds left which tied the score at 7 at the end of regulation. Each wrestler traded shots in sudden victory with no takedowns. In the first tiebreak, Geog’s opponent escaped in 1 sec and neither wrestler was able to take the other down. In Geog l’s tiebreak, he would’ve needed to escape in 1 second as well, as riding time in the tiebreak is what determines who the winner will be if no takedowns occur. Geog opted to go neutral awarding the point to his opponent, hoping to score a takedown in the 30 second period. He was unable to get it. Heck of a match. Both kids were exhausted and wrestled their asses off. Geog was down most of the match too, and scored two takedowns in the 3rd to take the lead. He really showed some grit after getting ridden for most of the 1st period. Love seeing that and it should give the team confidence (hopefully) moving forward at 197.

OK, I don't know a lot about college wrestling; however, I do know that Ohio State is ranked #2 behind #1 Penn State. In addition, Penn State has been a powerhouse in wrestling and won the NCAA Wrestling Championship the last 4 or 5 years. Just how big a gap is there between Ohio State and Penn State this year? Does Ohio State have any reasonable chance of beating Penn State this season? Or does the classic Larry Bird quote from back in the 80s apply to college wrestling this season?

The gap is probably 20-25 or so points in a dual. Ped State is an absolute dynasty right now. Short of significant injuries they will be huge favorites over everyone.

Yep, it’s not just beating your opponent 1v1. You can get bonus points for your team depending on how badly you beat down your opponents. Winning by 8 points or more is a major decision. Beating your guy by at least 15 is considered a tech fall and the match ends due to your superiority, and then, of course, if you pin your opponent that is called a fall.
In dual meets, a win by 7 or less nets 3 team points. A major decision by 8-14 points nets 4 team points. A tech fall will net 5 team points, and finally a pin will net your team 6 team points. If your opponent forfeits, that’s also 6 team points.
The same principles apply in conference or championship tournaments. Each round is scored by your victory plus any bonus points you get. In the case of Penn State, they have several dudes that can and will rack up bonus points, which will inevitably cause a disparity. The term “hammer” is used frequently when describing someone who has the history and seemingly effortless skill to pile on points. Even if one loses in the championship bracket, they still have the ability to bonus their way through on the consolation side to claim at best 3rd.
Mitch Mesenbrink is someone I would consider a hammer for them. The kid is absolutely relentless, and fun to watch to be honest. They have others as well. They have kids redshirting and simply waiting for their turn that would start at their respective weight class at any other school save for a few.

Watching Ped and Iowa right now.
Ped is up 13-3 after 5 matches. It's essentially over already. Not too many bonus points so far, Iowa is wrestling tough, but they are just outgunned.

I watched it too, just plain domination. Unless you're a PSU fan or have no team at all, it's going to be boring this year in the team race. Nobody is even close to them.
