Ohio State Wrestling (2015/2017/2018 B1G Champs, 2015 National Champs, 2019 National Runners-up)

McCrone 5th.
Bouzakis 3rd.
Mendez Champ.
Paddy 4th.
Shumate 4th.
Feldman 6th. MFF out.
All things considered, great performance. Mendez did his thing but great job McCrone, Bouzakis, Paddy and Shumate. Feldman was legit injured, hope he comes back strong.

Honestly that is a performance we should be damn proud of. Good job guys.

Hopefully, the Vegas tournament is a window into the Nationals....Buckeyes showed well, but still room to improve, am thinking. Certainly gives Ryan teaching directions. Does tOSU have (how many?) assistants to work with the various weight classes? Not knowledgeable enough, for certain, but know it's just not Ryan running from mat to mat on practices, dispensing wisdom and work-ons.

The CK was definitely a great measuring stick of expectations. We're not going to compete for the title, so focus on individual performances until next year and enjoy them.

On assistant coaches, in the practice room there's plenty of right decisions. Logie with the lower weight guys, Bo with the middle to heavier weights, etc. They work together well as a staff, but in a match Ryan wants to and should be involved. When I wrestled, I wanted my head coach in my corner...but part of that was knowing I had the best coach of all time in my books.

Sounds like Ryan utililizes asst coaches as one is supposed to. Also sounds like he is knowledgeable on 'what to do' for each wrestler in a match. Do see him being very verbal and engaged during matches. Thanks for the info, RB.
I've been critical of Ryan at times in terms of development once he recruits top guys, but he really is the best coach for our program. At the big tourneys it is tough because you have multiple matches going on, whereas in a dual setting you just stay put and coach each wrestler.

He is in no means checked out and is a very good coach. He has staffed very well and delegates. He is engaged and knows way more about wrestling than I ever will. Point is I agree with the approach to this year and the coaching staff, OSU wrestlers and a plan for next year. Not sending it in because there are guys that need to keep wrestling. But next year is the year to make the run, not this one.

OSU took down a very quality Pitt team 20-17 on Friday night, they have a bunch of ranked guys when we had a very depleted lineup (no Feldman, Rocco, a very limited Sasso, etc.). Really hard fought effort, scores from the official team site are below...if you like OSU wrestling, to me the official team site and X account for live results are the way to go.

Good showings by Shumate and Birden against tough opponents. Ryder's result was disappointing, but Stout is really tough. McCrone, Bouzakis, Mendez and Paddy with bonus points was critical in pulling away just enough for the win. On to Nashville for some tough duals in the Collegiate Wrestling Duals, I hope we are fully healthy for that one (well relatively, the lineup will be nowhere near where it could be between redshirts and injuries).

174: No. 17 Luca Augustine (PITT) dec. over e'Than Birden (OSU) TB1 2-1 | PITT 3, OSU 0
184: No. 11 Reece Heller (PITT) dec. over Seth Shumate (OSU) 6-5 | PITT 6, OSU 0
197: No. 16 Mac Stout (PITT) dec. over No. 15 Ryder Rogotzke (OSU) 8-2 | PITT 9, OSU 0
HWT: No. 14 Dayton Pitzer (PITT) tech fall over Hogan Swenski (OSU) 16-1 | PITT 14, OSU 0
125: No. 6 Brendan McCrone (OSU) major dec. over Matt Marlow (PITT) 8-0 | PITT 14, OSU 4
133: No. 7 Nic Bouzakis (OSU) major dec. over Vinnie Santaniello (PITT) 14-4 | PITT 14, OSU 8
141: No. 2 Jesse Mendez (OSU) tech fall over No. 21 Anthony Santaniello (PITT) 16-1 | PITT 14, OSU 13
149: No. 12 Dylan D'Emilio (OSU) dec. over vs. Finn Solomon (PITT) 7-4 | OSU 16, PITT 14
157: No. 7 Paddy Gallagher (OSU) major dec. over Dylan Evans (PITT) 13-4 | OSU 20, PITT 14

Forgot to hit Post reply Friday after the dual.

174: No. 17 Luca Augustine (PITT) dec. over e'Than Birden (OSU) TB1 2-1 | PITT 3, OSU 0 - Birden was fine in his debut.
184: No. 11 Reece Heller (PITT) dec. over Seth Shumate (OSU) 6-5 | PITT 6, OSU 0 - Hope to see Shumate at 84 all season.
197: No. 16 Mac Stout (PITT) dec. over No. 15 Ryder Rogotzke (OSU) 8-2 | PITT 9, OSU 0 - Rogotzke wrestling up a weight class. No RS now.
HWT:
No. 14 Dayton Pitzer (PITT) tech fall over Hogan Swenski (OSU) 16-1 | PITT 14, OSU 0 -
Swenski gets a start.
125: No. 6 Brendan McCrone (OSU) major dec. over Matt Marlow (PITT) 8-0 | PITT 14, OSU 4 - McCrone has been good. He AA's this year.
133: No. 7 Nic Bouzakis (OSU) major dec. over Vinnie Santaniello (PITT) 14-4 | PITT 14, OSU 8 - I like Bouzakis. Frost, Noto and Byrd coming up.
141: No. 2 Jesse Mendez (OSU) tech fall over No. 21 Anthony Santaniello (PITT) 16-1 | PITT 14, OSU 13 - Mendez keeps rollin'.
149: No. 12 Dylan D'Emilio (OSU) dec. over vs. Finn Solomon (PITT) 7-4 | OSU 16, PITT 14 - D'Emilio gets better as the season moves on.
157: No. 7 Paddy Gallagher (OSU) major dec. over Dylan Evans (PITT) 13-4 | OSU 20, PITT 14 - Paddy needs to stay healthy.
165: vs. Jared Keslar (PITT) dec. over No. 8 Sammy Sasso (OSU) 13-11 | OSU 20, PITT 17 - Sasso is small at 65. He just needs to find a way.

As far as TR and staff, I believe you coach in the room. You aren't teaching how to finish a single with thirty seconds left in the second. You manage.
Ryan's record with challenges isn't good. But to be fair in this match, you throw the brick in the first three matches, confident you don't need them from 125-165.
Still early with a long season ahead. Go Bucks!

Certainly the least qualified poster on this page, kudos to you guys in above posts, but hasn't the singlet guys always been strongest in the middle to heavier weights? And thereby weakest in the lighter weights? Looks like a reversal above. Not complaining, mind you, but a question. How do they determine what weights to lead off with? Would think that they'd go from lightest to heaviest, but sometimes go middle-up-down or ? Just a query for a football Saturday. go Bucks!

Really depends on the year, I don't think there is a pattern. In our title year, we were strong from top to bottom. Same goes for when we took runner up in Cleveland. Lately 125 has been an issue, as has for 157. I can't tell you why but my guess is guess just didn't pan out or got injured (like Paddy at 157 with injuries). McCrone is actually exceeding expectations but it seems like we just haven't landed a top notch 125lb guy in awhile.
