Ohio State Wrestling (2015/2017/2018 B1G Champs, 2015 National Champs, 2019 National Runners-up)

He never wrestled but after watching me when I was on the mat, he's an avid Ohio State wrestling fan. We watch every match that's televised together, makes it really fun.
Same with my Pop. He didn't know anything about it, but after my first match he was the biggest wrestling fan and my biggest supporter. He passed ten years ago. You're a lucky man to have those moments...Peace to you and yours.

Ohio State Buckeyes, 8-1 on the season with a nice finish at CKLV.
B1G schedule starts in five days.

Illinois on the 12th.
Maryland on the 19th.
Wisconsin on the 21st.
Michigan on the 26th.
Penn St. on the 2nd.
Rutgers on the 4th.
Indiana on the 11th.
Michigan State on the 16th to finish up the dual season.

All but one of these duals is winnable, with a question mark against Michigan (it's a home dual which should help).

Mid Season report card.

125 Brendan McCrone, 13-6 overall. He's been good. McCrone is young and he looks it. He'll get better with experience. Quality wins over Camacho and Ventrusca. Lost close matches to Medley and Volk. He's going to miss Ramos, Smith, Ayala and McKee until the B1G tourney. C+

133
Nic Bouzakis, 16-5 overall. Nic has taken some head scratching losses, and has had some quality wins. If he keeps his weight under control he's a tough out. He's been a terror on the backside. The schedule favors him the rest of the season. B-

141
Jesse Mendez, 15-1 overall. He's been really good. Last second loss to Matthews is his only blemish. He handled Hardy and Jack. Mendez has Bartlett and Moore left. He will miss Woods until the B1G tourney. A

149
Dylan D'Emilio, 17-4 overall. Having a great season. His pace is improved. Has beaten Arrington and Swiderski with losses to Arrington, Parco and Lovett. He still has Gomez and gets Lovett again. Will miss Van Ness(injury) and Voinovich until the B1G tourney. B

157
Paddy Gallagher, 16-5 overall. He's had a good season. He's been better on the mat and he's been finishing his shots. He still has Chumbley, Lewan and Haines. He'll miss Blaze, Franek and Robb until B1G. B-

165
Isaac Wilcox, 10-5 / Bryce Hepner, 2-1 - Wilcox won the early season wrestle off and has manned the 165 spot most of the season. Has a good win against Brady. He's been a solid wrestler for the Bucks. C- Bryce Hepner 2-1 overall. Had a close loss to Ramirez, unlucky not get to SV in that match. No Grade. It'll be interesting to see what happens the rest of the season here. Still have Fish, Gilcher, Messenbrink, Amine and Hamiti.

174 Carson Kharchla, 12-3 / Rocco Welsh, 11-1 overall. Kharch has a loss to #3, #7 and a medical. He's looked really good at 174, but the injuries wont leave him alone. A- If Kharchla is unable to finish the season we have a great, "backup" in Welsh. He's young, dynamic and pacey. His lone loss is a MFF. A
Whomever mans the spot still has, Starocci, Griffith and Ruth on the schedule. We miss Kennedy/Arnold, Washington and Wilson until the B1G tourney.

184 Seth Shumate, 6-2 / Gavin Hoffman, 5-4 overall. Shumate began the season and had a good start at the Open tourneys. One of his losses was to his RS teammate, Rogotzke. Shumate hasn't wrestled since the Edinboro dual. I believe he gets some more matches in the future. C- Hoffman has wrestled the majority of the matches since. He's struggled, but OSU must believe he's their best option? This is not the Same Hoffman that beat Sloan, Bonaccorsi, Woodley, Bulsak, Caffey and Amos. We still wrestle Truax and Bullock but we miss Pinto, Salazar and Assad until the B1G tourney. D

197
Luke Geog, 7-5 overall. I've been waiting on Geog to start his OSU career. It's been a pretty bumpy start. Had a disappointing CKLV. A nice win over Smith(VT) Was beaten soundly by Stout of Pitt and TF'ed by Hidlay (NCST) I'm confidant he's going to be the guy at 197 for the future and this year is going to be an, "experience season." He still has to face Brooks, Smith, Braunagel and Poznanski. Geog misses Glazier and Allred until the B1G tourney. C-

285
Nick Feldman, 14-3 overall. We've all been waiting on Feldman. This season will serve as his real RS season as an injury early in 2022 and a subsequent surgery delayed his start as a Buckeye. Quality wins over Fernandes (2x) and Catka. Losses to Trephan, Ghiadiali (injured but finished) and Bastida. I feel much the same as I do about Geog when considering Feldman. This will be a learning season. Feldman is good now and if he stays healthy he'll become a force. He's small for the weight and length will be a problem for him. His low single has been his bread and butter. He's quick and agile for a guy built like an outhouse. Coming up Feldman will have Kerk, Davison, Slavikowski, Luffman and Nevills. Still not sure about Steveson. If he comes back we miss him until the B1G tourney. That's a tough finish to the season. B+

A few other Buckeyes:

125 Vinnie Kilkeary, 17-6 overall. He's wrestled really well. Has wins over Lujan and Treaster. 7th at Midlands.
133 Andre Gonzales, 17-6 overall. Just no place for him on the roster. Has a win over Ragusin.
184 Ryder Rogotzke, 12-5 overall. He's been good and has nine falls on the season. Perhaps our best choice at 184. I'd rather he just keep the RS though. "Rather throw ya than know ya."

Happened to turn on TV as tOSU vs Cornell was winding up. Close team score, all was riding on Feldman's shoulders. Have never seen anyone so confident (unless Birdman shooting a 3), than Feldman. Looked cool, not nervous, but scared me when he gave away an escape point putting the Cornell wrestler up 4-0 in the third period. Watched him come back with two take-downs in closing seconds to win 6-4, and the meet for the Buckeyes. Great performance, and he gained a devotee with that match. Looks like an excellent overall team. Wrestlers can have bad days too....Go Bucks!

Excellent writeup @MPhillips . Can't say I really disagree with any of that. I might have McCrone graded around a B only because expectations weren't that high for him and he won some surprising matches. 184 and 197 have definitely been disappointing so far, especially 184...I have to pinch myself to be reminded Hoffman was an AA. Otherwise, it's been a really fun team to watch and I think as a whole have done a great job so far, especially in duals. Can't wait to hit the B1G stretch and hopefully our guys are rested up and healthy.

Heck MPhillips, that's what ratings/rankings are for! Of course they lead to expectations, one should beat two, nine beats twelve, and so on. Don't believe that anyone throws in the towel before the match is played (wrestled?) just because one is facing someone that 'someone' has rated him/her higher than you are....simply makes that 'upset' victory that much sweeter. You keep on doing what you're doing! Go Bucks, and look forward to the gauntlet of the B10 league duals.

Here we go! B1G duals season begins. Projected lineups. Intermat rankings.

125-No. 22 Brendan McCrone (R-Fr) or Vinny Kilkeary (Fr.) vs Justin Cardani (R-Sr.)
133-No. 12 Nic Bouzakis (R-Fr.) vs Tony Madrigal (Gr.)
141-No. 3 Jesse Mendez (So.) vs No. 25 Danny Pucino (R-So.)
149-No. 5 Dylan D'Emilio (R-Sr.) vs No. 10 Kannon Webster (Fr.)
157-No. 17* Isaac Wilcox (Sr.) vs .Joe Roberts (Jr.)
165-Bryce Hepner (R-Jr.) vs No. 25 Chris Moore (Fr.)
174-Rocco Welsh (Fr.) vs No. 3 Edmond Ruth (R-Jr.) or Caden Ernd (Jr.)
184-Ryder Rogotzke (Fr.) or Seth Shumate (R-Fr.)/Gavin Bell (R-Jr.) vs Dylan Connell (R-So.)
197-No. 23 Luke Geog (R-Fr.) vs Isiah Pettigrew (Jr.) or Peter Marinopoulos (Fr.)
HWT-No. 18 Nick Feldman (R-Fr.) vs. No. 13 Luke Luff man (R-Jr.)
* Ranking at 165

125 I'd like to see Kilkeary get a match here. I think it's a tough match no matter who we wrestle. Cardani is in his 6th yr and that should matter.
133 Again, I don't believe this is a gimme. Madrigal is a 6th yr GR and a 3x NQ.
141 I expect bonus here and at least five.
149 Dylan has looked good and he needs to win here. Webster is 9-1 on the season.
157 Wilcox has made the cut. Paddy from what I'm hearing is out for the season. Not sure how Wilcox will adjust to the weight cut.
165 It's time for Hepner to get it going. I hope he agrees.
174 If Ruth wrestles he should win. Welsh though is a tough out and Kharch may be done as well, so Rocco might as well get started.
184 I would like to see Rogotzke keep his RS. I believe it's telling that Hoffman isn't listed. Let Shumate get a start.
197 Geog needs a convincing victory. For me if not for him.
285 This is the start of a tough run for Feldman. A win here will be big.

My guess 26-7 or 23-10 Buckeyes.

Not sure we'll see Feldman. I know it's a gamble sending him on the mat with his knee problem, he probably shouldn't have wrestled last week
but his competitive spirit won out. It may be a late decision. Also a real shame to hear Paddy's done for another season. He's not the most
talented guy on the team but no one wrestles with more heart.

Ohio State Wrestling: Buckeyes win thrilling dual against Cornell, prepare to embark on Big Ten journey

The Scarlet and Grey took down the eighth-ranked Big Red last Friday, capped off by Nick Feldman’s walk-off win.

With 2023 and their stellar performance at the (2023) Collegiate Duals officially in the rearview, Tom Ryan’s Ohio State wrestling squad returned from its holiday hiatus to host Cornell last Friday night.

Ranked No. 8 nationally when they walked into Covelli Center, the Big Red presented a big challenge for the Buckeyes, thanks to an experienced roster and ranked grapplers at nearly every weight class. However, the visitors were also down literal all-world 133-pounder Vito Arujau, who has missed much of the season due to injury.

Advantage OSU — one that likely helped determine the result of this top-10 battle.

Ohio State’s Brendan McCrone (125) was defeated in the first match of the night, dropping a tough one to 14th-ranked Brett Ungar. But McCrone’s teammates would then go on to post three consecutive victories, highlighted by Nic Bouzakis’ pin at 133. Wrestling in place of Arujau, the Big Red’s Ethan Qureshi was no match for OSU’s relentless redshirt freshman Nic Bouzakis, who tallied his sixth win via pin or fall in 20 matches.

Bouzakis also has five losses on the season, but profiles as a potential Big Ten and/or NCAA contender come March. His matches have become appointment viewing for yours truly. Although we have no idea how a match between Bouzakis and Arujau would have played out, it is unlikely that the world champion from Cornell would have suffered a loss via fall.

However, the latter was simply not available for this go-round, and his absence ultimately led to important bonus points for Bouzakis and Ohio State.

Not a bad start.
Geog with a tech fall.
Feldman with a tech fall.
McCrone feels he has to outdo them so he gets a fall in the 1st period.
Bouzakis must have felt some sympathy for Illinois, only got a 9-4 decision.
Mendez feels no such sympathy, with a 12-2 major decision.
D'Emilio drops a tough 4-1 match to #10 ranked Webster.
Wilcox with a 4-3 decision.
Hepner with the fall!
Welsh drops a very tough 2-1 match to #3 ranked Ruth. Difference was the RT point.
Shumate closes out the night with a 14-2 MD.
36-6 final.
6 matches with bonus points. Not too shabby!
