Ohio State Wrestling (2015/2017/2018 B1G Champs, 2015 National Champs, 2019 National Runners-up)

Not a bad start.
Geog with a tech fall.
Feldman with a tech fall.
McCrone feels he has to outdo them so he gets a fall in the 1st period.
Bouzakis must have felt some sympathy for Illinois, only got a 9-4 decision.
Mendez feels no such sympathy, with a 12-2 major decision.
D'Emilio drops a tough 4-1 match to #10 ranked Webster.
Wilcox with a 4-3 decision.
Hepner with the fall!
Welsh drops a very tough 2-1 match to #3 ranked Ruth. Difference was the RT point.
Shumate closes out the night with a 14-2 MD.
36-6 final.
6 matches with bonus points. Not too shabby!
Lots of encouraging things to take from that dual. My dad got B1G+ because he couldn't stand not seeing the upcoming duals...I will say it has improved lightyears from when I last used it. Streaming was flawless and the commentary was MUCH better. I'm a man who's opinion can be changed and it officially is after last night until further notice, if you have decent internet it should work great from the early results.

On the specific matches, I know Illinois as a whole is not the level of competition we've been facing. However, they are still a solid squad and seeing Geog, McCrone, Hepner and Shumate get decisive wins is awesome. D'Emilio seemed to have a matchup issue with his guy from the bottom position, Webster looks like he is 6' tall somehow at that weight. Welsh wrestled really tough against a very good Ed Ruth, honestly Ruth stalled his ass off and should have been called to at least negate the RT to send it into OT...pretty sure Welsh is going to be a really good one here.

Nice win wrestling Bucks!

Think I heard the announcer (Matt O'Hara, former wrestler) say Wilcox this season has wrestled 157#,165#,and 174# matches. Guy should be up for team MVP just for controlling his weight that well ! Not to mention he's very competitive every match. Every time I've seen Ed Ruth he's wrestled like that, it seems to be his "thing". He waits and frustrates opponents into making mistakes then he jumps. Seems to work for him.

Wilcox would be the guy wearing 0 in football for being a team player. He's sacrificed a ton to benefit the team, everyone should be rooting for him wherever he ends up competing. With Paddy, Hepner and Kharchla all having some injury issues, he's been the true utility guy. Lucky to have him.

On Ruth, absolutely. Honestly it's lazy wrestling to me even though he's talented. Hopefully Rocco gets him next time.

More on the Illinois match::

Here's how all 10 starters performed in the dual:

No. 23 Luke Geog, 197 pounds: Geog secured two quick takedowns in the first period. He turned the first into a four-point nearfall and the second into a two-point nearfall before he added a third takedown for a 15-2 lead. In the second period, Geog ended the match with a fourth takedown and put five points on the board for Ohio State.

No. 18 Nick Feldman, HWT: After he received Big Ten Wrestler of the Week honors for a clutch performance vs. Cornell, Feldman earned a tech fall via a takedown clinic on Sungyup Ryu. He defeated Ryu 17-2 a minute into the third period.

No. 22 Brendan McCrone, 125 pounds: McCrone needed one minute and 23 seconds to pin Justin Cardani. The six points put Ohio State up 16-0 in the dual.

No. 12 Nic Bouzakis, 133 pounds: The bout was a little closer for Bouzakis, as it was the first of the dual to go all seven minutes. He led 6-2 after the first period, then earned two points for a reversal to start the second. Tony Madrigal escaped to start the third period to make it 8-4, but Bouzakis added a riding time point and won a 9-4 decision.

No. 3 Jesse Mendez, 141 pounds: Mendez had two quick takedowns in the first period and a stalling point. After a second period and escape and takedown, he led 11-2. A riding time point gave him a 12-2 major decision over No. 25 Danny Pucino to put the Buckeyes up 23-0.

No. 5 Dylan D'Emilio, 149 pounds: D'Emilio suffered the first loss of the dual for the Buckeyes, dropping his match 4-1 to No. 10 Kannon Webster. A Webster takedown late in the second period ended up being the difference in the bout, and the Illini scored their first points to trail 23-3.

Isaac Wilcox, 157 pounds: Wilcox moved down to 157 pounds from the 165-pound class for the rest of the season. His hard work to make weight paid off, as he battled to a 4-3 decision over Joe Roberts.

Bryce Hepner, 165 pounds: With Wilcox down a weight class, Hepner took over at 165 pounds and performed well in relief. The unranked wrestler pinned No. 25 Chris Moore in four minutes and put six points on the board for Ohio State.

Rocco Welsh, 174 pounds: Welsh, a freshman who has performed well with No. 8 Carson Kharchla out with an undisclosed ailment, faced off with the No. 3 wrestler in the 174-pound class, Edmond Ruth. The bout was scoreless after one period, and Welsh scored the initial point with an escape 90 seconds into the second. Ruth escaped in the third to tie the match, and with an advantage in riding time, he secured himself a win and Illinois its final three points of the dual.

Seth Shumate, 184 pounds: Shumate got the Buckeyes back on the board to finish the dual with a major decision over Caden Ernd, 14-2. Ohio State won the dual, 36-6.

Here's how all 10 starters performed in the dual:
Geog had 1-0, freshman wrestler and Feldman had 5th year guy with a 5-3 record.
McCrone was a surprise but he's been that all season. Bouzakis handled the seasoned vet.
Mendez was good. D'Emilio lost to a 10-1 true freshman. Good match.
Wilcox had a win down a weight class. Hepner did what we've been waiting for.
Welsh was the wrestler of the night for The Bucks. In a Loss. Shumate got a win he should have against a 10-17 sophomore.

Great start! Have to win the matches you should. Especially if you're a Buckeye. Maryland coming up....
:oh::io:

Two duals this weekend with Md. on Friday @ home and Wisc. Sunday afternoon @ Wisc.
Only Wilcox (157) and Geog (197) are facing higher seeds vs. Terps.
Against the Badgers the wrestlers vs. higher seeds are McCrone (125) Hepner (165) Welsh (174) and Shumate (184).
Go Bucks..we need these two because the schedule after this weekend is brutal.

We should handle Maryland with relative ease and Wisky will be a stiffer competition, but we should win that one by 10-15 points imo. This is a good dual team and these should be two fun ones to watch with my dad. We are buried in snow/ice right now, so it is a great weekend to stay warm inside and watch some quality wrestling. Go wrestling Bucks.

Finally broke down today and got a B1G+ subscription (at least for the next month). Watched the first period and a half of woman's hockey (#1 Bucks vs. #7 MN Duluth), switched over to watch the Bucks #7 wrestling team easily handle #25 Maryland 38-4, then went back and picked up the hockey game where I left off as the ladies dispatched Duluth 3-0. Not a bad evening of Buckeye sports.

Went about trying to get B10+, but couldn't get answers to my questions. When finally got to speak to a human, they couldn't answer my questions. Was going to sign up for it, simply tOSU sports versus all B10, for $7/mo, per ad, but then that went away and jumped to $10 for some unknown reason. Finally got someone who knew something, and it appears another company controls B10+, and not the B10 network. Hopefully you guys have navigated this, but seems a bit dodgy for me. Maybe next year.
